Debbie RoweMichael's Ex Not Backing Down Over Kids. 30-06-'04

Things are heating up between Michael Jackson and his ex Debbie Rowe over custody of their children, 7-year-old Prince Michael and 5-year-old Paris.

Jackson's chief assistant, Evvelyn Tavacci, has reportedly been called to give a deposition on July 19 in connection with Rowe's ongoing child custody litigation, and more subpoenas may be issued. An inside source close to Debbie is said to believe that Tavacci contributed to the rift and eventual breakup of Debbie Rowe and Michael Jackson. The source says the children's nanny, Grace Rwarmba, may be called too.

In February, Debbie filed court papers asking a retired judge to mediate an issue concerning her and Michael's divorce agreement. ET (TV station) was told at that time that Debbie's approach in her fight will be to claim that Jackson violated many aspects of the divorce agreement, which allegedly includes the stipulation that Jackson gets sole custody of the children.

The Very Best Of The Jacksons (2CD Set) CD Album Cover'The Very Best Of The Jacksons' 2CD Album Is Released. 28-06-'04

'The Very Best Of The Jacksons' cd album is released in the UK through Epic Records. Split across two discs, disc one primarily features the early Motown days and the second, mainly their hits as the Jacksons (as opposed to Jackson 5) released on Epic.

Often overshadowed by Michael's subsequent success as a solo artist, this anthology demonstrates why the Jacksons perfect balance of pop and soul has endured when compared to one-time peers such as the Osmonds. The irresistible funk of 'ABC' and 'I Want You Back' are classics of the period as are the incredible ballads 'Got To Be There' and little Michael's ode to a loveable rodent, 'Ben'.

Highlights of disc two are predominantly from their massive albums 'Destiny' and 'Triumph', released in the late 1970's, early 1980's; 'Can You Feel It', 'Blame It On The Boogie' and 'Shake Your Body' to name but three. It was around this time that Michael began his adult solo career and 'The Very Best Of The Jacksons' appropriately ends with a live version of 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough' from MJ's 'Off The Wall'. Michael may have gone on to eclipse his family but there can be little dispute that the Jacksons are one of the most important musical dynasties ever.

CourtAnother Court Appearance For Attorneys. 26-06-'04

The judge in the Michael Jackson child molestation case rebuffed requests Friday (June 25) from a news media attorney to unseal grand jury transcripts so the public can learn whether the singer is getting a fair trial.

Judge Rodney Melville said he had to balance the people's right to know with Jackson's right to a fair trial, and he acknowledged frustration with that task.

Media lawyer Theodore Boutrous Jr. had asked the judge to unseal 47 search warrants and the entire grand jury transcript so the public can know the exact charges the entertainer faces and the procedures used to gather evidence.
Defense lawyer Thomas Mesereau Jr. does not want grand jury transcripts or search warrants unsealed on the eve of trial, saying it would hurt his case.

Jackson, 45, has pleaded not guilty to committing a lewd act upon a child, administering alcohol, and conspiring to commit child abduction, false imprisonment and extortion.
After announcing his decision on Boutrous' request, the judge sealed a number of motions and search warrants without comment, saying he would issue written rulings later.

Another hearing was scheduled for July 9th.

Judge In Jackson Case Refuses To Unseal Transcript. 25-06-'04

The judge in the child molestation case against Michael Jackson rebuffed requests from a news media attorney Friday morning to "let the sun shine in" on secret documents.

Superior Court Judge Rodney Melville in Santa Maria expressed exasperation with the challenge of handling the case of such a major superstar, indicating procedures must be different for such a celebrity. Media lawyer Theodore Boutrous Junior implored Melville to open 47 search warrants, grand jury transcripts and the entire grand jury transcript itself so that the public can know the exact charges against Jackson.

Jackson has pleaded innocent to committing a lewd act upon a child, administering alcohol and conspiracy to commit child abduction, false imprisonment and extortion. Key sections of the indictment against the music superstar are blacked out. The names of five alleged co-conspirators remain secret, as do 28 specific acts the prosecution alleges in support of the charges.

LawsuitJackson Hearing To Concentrate On Secrecy Issues. 25-06-'16

Today's hearing in the Michael Jackson child molestation case will focus on how much of the evidence submitted should be kept from the public.

The pre-trial hearing will deal with 13 items pertaining to the case but the decision to keep nearly all documents sealed will be questioned by lawyers for the media.

Due to Jackson's celebrity, Michael has instructed his lawyers to fight to keep the Grand Jury transcript, their indictment and at least 47 search warrants from public consumption.

First Amendment attorney Douglas Mirrell fumes, "The obsession with secrecy appears now to have gone off the deep end.

"They are making unavailable to the public information and documentation historically available in other cases."

Media lawyer Theodore Boutrous - who is representing various media outlets trying to overturn the ban - adds, "Since the last hearing, the practice has continued to be to file virtually every document under seal. They're keeping the public in the dark."

Jackson, 45, is facing multiple counts of molesting teenager Gavin Arvizo at his Neverland Ranch last year (03).

GMA: Accuser Drank Alcohol In Front Of Mother, Jackson Not Present. 24-06-'04

Gavin Arvizo
Gavin Arvizo accusing Michael of child molestation.

For the first time, ABC News has learned how Michael Jackson could respond to some of the most explosive charges against him, charges that he provided alcohol to a minor and that he conspired to silence his accuser's family by keeping them virtual prisoners at Neverland and for a week in a hotel room. And ABC News has learned that a likely focus will be the accuser's mother, questioning both, her credibility and her motives. At the heart of the case is alcohol.

Prosecutors allege that Michael Jackson provided liquor to the 12 year old accuser with an intent to commit molestation. Now sources familiar with Jackson's side of the case say he adamantly denies giving liquor to the boy or knowingly being present while he was drinking. In addition, those sources claim there are witnesses who can testify that the accuser and his siblings were often drinking at Neverland when Jackson wasn't even on the premises. And more than that. They claim that the boy's mother was often present while the kids were drinking, and she did nothing to stop it.

Dana Cole: If the mother is present, that would certainly cause a jury to think (A) What's the big deal? or ( How could we possibly blame Michael Jackson for something that is being done in front of the kids' own mother? Jessica Yellin: and there's more from Jackson's side of the story. Jackson's associates are also accused of conspiring to imprison the alleged victim's family, both at Neverland and at this hotel [Country Inn & Suites] at Calabasas, a suburb of Los Angeles. But sources say they expect Jackson's Team to try to paint a very different picture -- that it was the mother who asked to be put up at Calabasas so she could look for a new house. They say the mother wanted to hide after her son appeared in the controversial Martin Bashir documentary on Michael Jackson. We've also learned that friends of Jackson claim that not only did the mother come and go from that hotel at will, but that she went on a shopping spree, all on Michael Jackson's dime.

Dana Cole: You consent to go with someone, then it's clearly not an abduction. Jessica Yellin: Was it abduction or a generous trip? That will be left for a jury to decide. Now sources close to the accuser's family insist the mother was not free to come and go in Calabasas, and they categorically deny she knew about or saw her kids drinking. In fact, they say when she learned about the drinking, she wanted to separate her kids from Michael Jackson's reach.

Jackson's New Home. 22-06-'04

Troubled singer Michael Jackson is hiding out in a mock French chateau at the heart of Beverly Hills as he awaits trial on child molestation charges.

The pop superstar is paying a reported $100,000 - a month for the 12-bedroom home which he once considered buying in 1995.

Jackson is considering buying the $20 million mansion in the next year because he insists he'll no longer call his Neverland Ranch home after it was raided by Santa Barbara, California, police in November (03).

The next court date in Jackson's case is 25 June, although the King of Pop isn't expected to attend court again until September.

Michael JacksonJackson Case Hinges On Three-Day Brazil Trip. 21-06-'16

Prosecutors in the Michael Jackson child molestation case are scratching their heads after discovering the King of Pop whisked his accusers off to Brazil for three days shortly before they pressed charges.

The pop superstar's former employee Vinnie Amen, who is among those under investigation on alleged abduction charges, has spoken out about a harmless three-week trip to Brazil last year (03), but it appears the vacation only lasted three days.

American scandal show Celebrity Justice has learned the tickets were bought for a three-day trip, not a three-week holiday. They show that Jackson's aides were booked to fly with the accuser's family to Brazil on March 1 (03) and return on March 4 (03).

Celebrity Justice investigators have already discovered that Jackson paid off the lease on the family's apartment in Los Angeles and took possession of all their belongings.

The family were living at the Neverland Ranch at the time of the trip to Brazil, prompting prosecutors to suggest the family was offered a luxury home in Brazil - far away from Santa Barbara, California, authorities, who were investigating child molestation whispers about the pop star.

DA Responsible For Leak Of Confidential Documents? 19-06-'04

Fox news reporter Roger Friedman suspects Thomas Sneddon and Larry Feldman of being responsible for the leak of the confidential documents of 1994.

In his column, Friedman says that most of the parties involved at that moment have destroyed these documents, so they cannot be responsible for publishing the agreement between Michael Jackson and the family of the boy who accused the singer in 1993 of child molestation.

According to Roger Friedman, attorney Larry Feldman also received a huge payment. Interestingly enough he is also the attorney for the family of the boy who is now accusing Michael Jackson of child molestation. This makes Friedman think that Feldman must still have the documents made in 1994 and might be the one who gave them to Court TV reporter Diane Dimond. If it wasn’t Feldman who gave Dimond the documents, which were sealed by court, it must have been district attorney Thomas Sneddon, says Roger Friedman.

Thomas Sneddon and Larry Feldman
Attorney Larry Feldman (right) with Santa Barbara County District Attorney Tom Sneddon.

“Certainly the family of the accuser from 10 years ago didn't want the papers to come out. You don't have to be Columbo to figure out that leaves Feldman and prosecutor Tom Sneddon as prime suspects.” Legal matters should be discussed in a courtroom, but obviously some people really want to try this case in public. As Michael Jackson said a few days ago, this media leak hasn’t been investigated yet. Once again the world press is writing about the content of the confidential documents, but no one, except for Roger Friedman is wondering who is behind this leak. And as he writes in his column, this leak isn’t the first one in this case. Time to find out who is behind all this and what his motives are, right?

Judge Decides To Keep Name Secret In Jackson Case. 18-06-'04

The judge in the Michael Jackson child molestation case has decided to keep secret the name of a person prosecutors unsuccessfully tried to hold in contempt for violating a gag order. Superior Court Judge Rodney Melville cited Jackson's right to a fair trial and the need to keep secret the anonymity of the minor accuser as reasons for not releasing an unedited version of the contempt request.

Melville has consistently cited these reasons for either sealing or heavily editing documents in the case - grand jury transcripts, details of the indictment against the singer and numerous search warrants. Correspondence between the defense and prosecution in the Jackson case were also released Thursday (June 17). Much of those documents dealt with the sharing of evidence between the sides, though there was one paragraph in which District Attorney Tom Sneddon accused Jackson of possibly violating the gag order by having an off-the-air talk about the case with television anchor Geraldo Rivera.

However, Jackson is not believed to be the person prosecutors wanted held in contempt. Jackson, 45, has pleaded not guilty to engaging in lewd acts with an unnamed boy under the age of 14 on four occasions between Feb. 7 and March 20, 2003, and four counts of "administering an intoxicating agent" - reportedly wine - to help him with the alleged molestations. He also has pleaded not guilty to a conspiracy charge involving child abduction, false imprisonment and extortion and a count of attempted child molestation.

New Box Set Due For Release. 17-06-'04

Some defendants make sure their appearance at trial is preceded by only the most serious public profile, low key behaviour, and as little self promotion as possible.

Not Michael Jackson. With his trial for child molestation set to begin officially on September 13, Jackson will first release a box set of greatest hits, remixes, and rarities in late August.

The three or four CD set, including four new songs and lots of hard-to-find material, is still being assembled. But sources tell me that it's a go for release around Labour Day, at the latest.

"It can't come out during the trial," my source said, "and it's not going to come out after the trial, that's for sure. So they have no choice but to get it out right before the trial."

The package — which will trace Jackson's history post-Jackson 5 through the present — is key in the pop singer's contractual life. It will be his final release on Epic Records as part of his long term deal with Sony Music.

This is completely separate from his 50 percent interest in Sony/ATV Music Publishing and/or including all loans that are outstanding. But it frees Jackson to start his own label, seek a deal elsewhere, or renegotiate with Sony for an entirely new recording deal.

Of course, no new deal is likely to be concluded until after the trial, which probably won't have a real start date until later in the fall or even in the beginning of 2005.

Michael JacksonStatement From Jackson About Leak. 17-06-'04

“I respect the obligation of confidentiality imposed on all of the parties to the 1993 proceedings. Yet, someone has chosen to violate the confidentiality of those proceedings. Whoever is now leaking this material is showing as much disrespect for the Santa Maria Court’s ‘gag order’ as they are a determination to attack me.

No action or investigation has been taken to determine who is leaking this information or why they are permitted to violate the law in such a manner. I respectfully request that people see these efforts for what they are. “These kinds of attacks and leaks seek to try the case in the press, rather than to a jury who will hear all of the evidence that will show that I did not, and would not, ever, harm a child.

I have always maintained my innocence and vehemently denied that these events ever took place. I reluctantly chose to settle the false claims only to end the terrible publicity and to continue with my life and career. “I ask all of my neighbors in Santa Maria, the people to whom I give my loyal trust and admiration, to keep an open mind and give me a chance to show that I am completely innocent of these charges. I will not let you down.”

Jackson Spokeswoman: Leaking Of Doc 'An Act Of Desperation'. 17-06-'04

Pop star Michael Jackson, who faces a trial on child molestation charges, paid more than $23 million to a boy and his family in the mid-1990's to settle similar accusations, CourtTv reported on Tuesday (June 15). Though it has long been reported that the 45-year-old singer paid millions of dollars to settle a civil lawsuit by the boy, CourtTv said it had obtained a copy of the legal agreement and was making it public for the first time.

A spokeswoman for Jackson said she was trying to find out if the documents shown on camera by CourtTv were "the actual agreement" in that case. She added the release of the information appeared aimed at influencing potential jurors against the entertainer. "That settlement had a very strict confidentiality agreement that was negotiated by parties," spokeswoman Raymone Bain said. "We are going to abide by that and not comment." She added: "Whoever released this agreement, whether it is the actual agreement or not, did it deliberately and willfully with the intent to influence potential jurors in the current case, which is outrageous and an act of desperation."

The papers, which were signed by Jackson and his then-attorneys, Johnnie Cochran and Howard Weitzman, in January of 1994, show that Jackson agreed to set up a $15.3 million trust fund for the boy, as well as pay him a seven-figure lump sum. According to the court documents, Jackson also agreed to pay the boy's parents $1.5 million each and pay $5 million, plus expenses, to their attorney. CourtTv said the moonwalking entertainer also had to pay his own lawyers an unspecified amount for their work on the case.

Jackson was indicted in April on a 10-count indictment that charges him with committing lewd acts on a boy under the age of 14 as well as child abduction, extortion and false imprisonment. He has pleaded innocent and his attorney, Thomas Mesereau, has vowed to vindicate Jackson at trial, which is tentatively scheduled to begin in September.

Judge Refuses To Lower Jackson's $3 Million Bail. 15-06-'04

A judge has refused to lower Michael Jackson's $3 million bail in his child molestation case, saying the singer's wealth justified the higher-than-normal bail amount.

Santa Barbara County Judge Rodney S. Melville added that the bail should remain higher than what is typically imposed on defendants facing similar charges to ensure that Jackson appears at future court dates.

Jackson's bail was set when he was arrested in November, but his attorneys did not fight the amount.

Jackson's new attorney, Thomas Mesereau Jr., requested that Jackson's bail be reduced to no more than $435,000 after he took over the case in April.
