Fonce Mizell, Writing And Producing “I Want You Back”, “ABC” Dies At Age 68. 29-07-'11

Fonce Mizell, a record producer, songwriter and arranger who helped create the Jackson 5’s first hits, died on July 5 in Beverly Hills, Calif. He was 68. The cause was cardiac arrest, said his brother Larry.

In 1969, Mr. Mizell and three others, including Berry Gordy Jr., the founder of Motown Records, teamed up to work with the Jackson 5, who had just signed with Motown. Known collectively as the Corporation, the four wrote and produced “I Want You Back,” “ABC” and “The Love You Save,” the successive No. 1 hits that defined the group’s upbeat sound and started its 11-year-old lead singer, Michael Jackson, on the road to superstardom.

Darren Julien Talks About Michael Jackson. 29-07-'11

President and CEO of Julien's Auction House, Darren Julien recently gave an interview to the Examiner's Katrina Wheeler during which he spoke about the first time he met Michael Jackson, the recent amazing sale of the "Thriller" jacket and about any future auctions featuring items from the King of Pop. Excerpts from the interview appear below:

KKW: Did you ever have the opportunity to meet Mr. Michael Jackson, and if so, can you share the experience with our readers?

DJ: Yes, I met Michael on several occasions, but mostly talked with him on the phone. I first met Michael at an event with Quincy Jones. All my dealings with Michael were always very positive, and he had a sweet and gentle spirit about him. We are very grateful for all that he did for us, and will always be an important part of Julien’s history.

KKW: What other items in the Michael Jackson auction sold for high amounts? Are there any other items that sold for anywhere near the neighborhood of the “Thriller” jacket?

DJ: Julien’s Auctions holds all the world records for selling Michael Jackson items at the highest prices. The highest price paid for one of his items previously was his white glove from the Motown 25 Special. We sold it for $420,000. The next highest item was his “Bad” jacket that we sold for $271,000.

KKW: Will there be a future Michael Jackson auction and if so, when do you anticipate that it will take place?

DJ: Yes, we will have other auctions that will include items from Michael Jackson. We are planning some major projects in the future. Whatever we do in the future, we will always make sure that Michael’s legacy is preserved and that we never do anything against the wishes of the estate, Katherine or the children as they are the ultimate protectors of Michael Jackson.

Captain EO. 28-07-'11

Captain EO, Michael’s excellent 3D adventure film, premiered at Epcot and Disneyland in 1986, and at Tokyo Disneyland in 1987. Captain EO was closed in 1996 to make way for a different attraction, but soon after Michael’s death, fans began a series of campaigns to have it re-instated. Disney obliged, and the film re-opened at the Orlando, Paris and Tokyo sites for a limited engagement, and called it ‘Captain EO tribute.’

The film reopened in Tokyo on July 1, 2010. Originally set to be a run through the holidays, the attraction was continually granted extensions until the decision was made in Summer 2011, to let the attraction remain a permanent feature of Tokyo Disneyland.

No announcements have been made by the other three sites, but no closure date has been announced either.

Charity Donation Row Angers Michael Fans Seeking Tribute Concert Tickets. 27-07-'11

FANS hoping to go to the Michael Jackson tribute concert at the Millennium Stadium in October have been told their chances of being there depend on how much they are willing to donate to charity – on top of the ticket price.

Chris Hunt, boss of concert organisers Global Events Live, told CNN profits from the October 8 Michael Forever show would go to charities in the United States and Britain.

These are The Prince’s Trust, Aids Project Los Angeles and a cancer charity.

But fans logging on to the Global Events website to buy tickets – which will not be available until August 4 – are told: “Choose your ticket price and tell us how much you will give to the charities at the time of purchase.

“Remember the more you pledge to charity, the more chance you have of getting a ticket. Tickets will range from £55 to £289 plus shipping. The amount of your pledge is up to you.”

The Millennium Stadium is owned by the WRU. A spokesman said: “We will, as usual, ensure that all ticket distribution complies with the stadium’s obligations.”

Michael’s brothers Jermaine and Randy Jackson have both distanced themselves from it, though the event has been endorsed by their mum Katherine, the singer’s sister La Toya and his brothers Tito, Marlon and Jackie.

In a statement Jermaine and Randy said: “We find it impossible to support an event that is due to take place during the criminal trial surrounding Michael’s death.

“There will come a time and place for an amazing and deserving tribute to Michael. But we feel that the most important tribute we can give to our brother at this time is to seek justice in his name.”

Jermaine then tweeted he was “offered good money” to take part in the show.

“We declined. It’s not about the money,” he said.

He added that he “wouldn’t reconsider” his position “even if dates were moved because of how (the) promoter has handled matters”.

Jermaine Jackson tried to mount a tribute concert in Vienna in 2009. Plans were scrapped after he struggled to get big-name acts.

Jackson Tribute Promoter Sued For Fraud. 27-07-'11

The City of Summerside, P.E.I., is suing an American concert promoter for fraud, saying it paid $1.3 million for a Michael Jackson tribute concert that did not exist.

The city filed papers Monday in a San Jose, Calif., courthouse against Katrina Berg Sussmeier and her promotion company, Starlink Productions. The city claims Sussmeier promised it could host the first concert of an official Jackson tribute, featuring stars such as Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna and Usher.

Summerside would have kicked off the world tour July 24.

“In reality,” reads the statement of claim, “the Michael Jackson Tribute Show was, from start to finish, an elaborate fraud.”

The statement of claim describes how the city fell completely for Sussmeier’s plans.

It says the city wired two separate payments of $650,000 to the promoter: the first in July 2009, the month after Jackson died, and the other in March 2010. The second payment was sent to the promoter despite red flags already being raised for the city.

The second payment was made despite growing doubts.

“Summerside officials became increasingly concerned about the status of the concert,” says the statement of claim about the months leading up to that final payment.

The city is suing to get back the $1.3 million in taxpayers money, as well as for unspecified damages.

None of the allegations have been proven in court. A message left for the promoter Monday night by CBC News was not returned.

Final Jackson Rehearsals Won't Be Shown At Trial. 25-07-'11

A judge says unseen footage of Michael Jackson's final rehearsals cannot be shown to jurors in the upcoming trial of the doctor charged in his death.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor approved a motion by Sony Pictures quashing a subpoena for 16 hours of previously-unseen footage of Jackson's rehearsals for a series of comeback concerts. He said Monday that the images were valuable to the studio and did not show the singer in poor health as Dr. Conrad Murray's attorneys have contended.

Prosecutors had wanted to show several hours of footage to show that Jackson was engaged, confident and healthy in the days before his death on June 25, 2009.

Murray has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter. His trial is slated to begin Sept. 8.

Katherine Jackson: No Evidence Estate Killed MJ. 25-07-'11

Katherine Jackson tells TMZ she knows of NO evidence to support the conspiracy theory that people connected with the Michael Jackson Estate killed the singer.

A number of people, including LaToya Jackson, have suggested there was a conspiracy to kill Michael, and LaToya has said she believes Estate honchos were involved.

Katherine tells TMZ ... "It is only natural for people who loved Michael, including family members, to be suspicious about the circumstances surrounding Michael’s untimely death. So far I have not seen one shred of evidence that anyone associated with Michael’s estate conspired to kill him.

She continues, "If such evidence ever comes to my attention I will be the first to bring those facts to light. No one loved Michael more than I loved him, but no one should be falsely accused, as Michael was, of a crime they did not commit."

The 56-year-old singer and composer revealed how he grabbed his floundering brother and hauled him to shore.

He gave Jackie mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, but had to take him to the hospital.

Doctors found an air bubble had burst in a lung.

"It had been a life or death situation," Jermaine added.

Michael Jackson's Daughter, Paris' Facebook Page Hacked. 23-07-'11

Michael Jackson's daughter Paris has had her Facebook account hacked and now, all of Paris' personal photos have been leaked online. It seems that the hackers have once again proven how vulnerable the Internet is. Thank God, this hacker wasn't as perverse as a recently caught one. He was switching users Facebook profile photos with their hacked naked photos.

You can see from the photos that Paris is growing into a lovely young woman and there's no denying that she and her siblings are not biologically Michael's. There is an assortment of pictures and one even shows a woman who appears to be Janet Jackson. Another photo shows Joe Jackson and Jermaine looking on as Paris sits atop of a motorcycle.

These photos are a private look into the life of a normal girl. Michael Jackson would be happy to see the lovely young lady she is becoming, we're certain he would be saddened to know that her privacy is not respected.

Defense Not Happy With Jackson Footage. 22-07-'11

After practically begging the judge to allow them to look at hundreds of hours of footage of Michael Jackson's final rehearsals for the "This Is It" concert series in London, attorneys for Dr. Conrad Murray now say it is "a waste of time."

On Friday, Sony studios asked the judge in the case against Murray to throw out a subpoena for the footage following the defense's remarks.

Attorneys for Sony Pictures Entertainment, which owns the footage from the concert film, argued in a motion that neither the prosecutors nor defense attorneys should be able to use the footage during the trial.

Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor is scheduled to consider the request on Monday, but he canceled his plans to review the footage over the weekend. He stated that he had already viewed around 16 hours of film that attorneys were considering presenting to jurors as evidence, but he would not travel to Sony studios for additional viewing's on Saturday and Sunday.

Sony based its motion on statements made by defense attorney J. Michael Flanagan after a hearing on Wednesday in which he said the footage does not show Jackson was already in poor health before he died.

Flanagan is representing Conrad Murray, who has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson.

Murray's defense team had been hoping the unseen footage from "This Is It" would support their contention that Jackson was frail and in poor health in the days before he died.

"We believe his [Jackson's] health is somewhat compromised, but he's not displaying it," Flanagan told reporters, adding that he believed the footage was irrelevant to the trial. "I really think it's a big waste of time," he said.

Sony, who was reluctant to release the footage at all, jumped on Flanagan's comment in its motion stating, "If the enterprise is a waste of time, the court has stated that it has little time to be wasted."

Prosecutors however, found the footage very helpful to their case, and asked Judge Pastor to allow them to use up to 12 hours of raw footage.

Jury selection in the trial is scheduled to begin on Sept. 8.

Judge In Michael Jackson Case To View Footage At Sony Studios. 21-07-'11

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor said today he will visit Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City by this weekend to review rehearsal footage of Michael Jackson taken shortly before his death to determine whether it should be shown to jurors in the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, Jackson’s former doctor who has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Prosecutors say that the 12 to 16 hours of raw footage should be admissible in the case involving Murray, who is accused of administering propofol—a powerful anesthetic—to the singer to help him fall asleep, then failing to properly monitor him. Defense attorneys claim most of the footage is irrelevant, saying that it simply shows the singer performing. They also suggested that Jackson could have given himself a larger dose of propofol while the doctor was out of the singer’s bedroom in a rented Holmby Hills estate.

Jackson Doc’s Defense Wants Jury Sequestered. 20-07-'11

An attorney for Michael Jackson’s doctor says the jury in his involuntary manslaughter trial should be sequestered to prevent contamination by TV pundits – specifically Nancy Grace.

J. Michael Flanagan referred in a pretrial hearing Wednesday to coverage of the Casey Anthony trial in Florida and said Dr. Conrad Murray’s trial is expected to get even wider coverage. He said telling jurors not to watch TV will be insufficient.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor said the courts can’t afford to put up jurors at a hotel and he thinks it’s unnecessary.

Murray has pleaded not guilty to causing Jackson’s death on June 25, 2009, with an overdose of propofol and other sedatives.

The judge said the trial will begin on Sept. 8 with prospective jurors being given questionnaires.

MJ Tops Disney Dance Poll. 20-07-'11

Michael Jackson has topped a poll of the greatest dance moments ever captured on film and actually made the top five list not once, but twice!

The King of Pop's famous zombie dance in the "Thriller" video was voted number one in the Disney Channel survey and beat out the cast of High School Musical and their performance of "We're All In This Together."

Rounding out the poll were dancer Tobias Mead's amazing audition for UK TV show Britain's Got Talent in 2010 for third place; Jackson's iconic "Smooth Criminal" video in fourth place; and Hannah Montana's "Hoedown Throwdown" and Beyonce's "Single Ladies" video tied for fifth place.

In the Disney Channel survey Jackson was also named the King of Dance, ahead of British boy band JLS, High School Musical star Zac Efron, and singer/actor Justin Timberlake.

Sheryl Crow Learned A Lot From MJ. 18-07-'11

Singer and songwriter Sheryl Crow, who sang backup for Michael Jackson on his BAD Tour, recently featured a cover of the Jackson 5's 'I Want You Back' on her album 100 Miles from Memphis. In a recent interview, she was asked about what she learned while on tour with Michael Jackson. She replied,

I learned a lot just by observing him, watching him perform every night. There were things I could apply to what I wanted to do and things I could look at and say, “This would definitely not work for me.” His show every single night was exactly the same, like it was a Broadway show, which was great and worked for him, but I couldn’t do that."

Former Michael Jackson Manager Pursuing Estate Over Commissions. 14-07-'11

Since Michael Jackson died in 2009, the estate has been raking in money, earning estimated profits of more than $300 million through music sales and licensing projects.

Now, the personal management firm of DeMann Entertainment, which represented Jackson from the lucrative period between 1978 to 1983, is seeking its cut from the newfound success.

On Tuesday, Demann Entertainment (formerly Weisner-Demann) filed a motion in LA Superior Court to compel arbitration with John Branca, the executor of the Michael Jackson estate.

Demann asserts that its 1978 personal management agreement with Jackson entitles it to certain monetary commissions as well as an "unrestricted and unlimited right" to audit financial records to make sure that proper commissions are being paid. The firm says it has read press accounts of the success that the MJ estate has enjoyed recently, and has reason to believe it has not been paid in full.

In January, Demann sent notice about its intention to audit, but allegedly the estate returned word that the firm would have to go through Sony Music, and that it would "support" such action.

This hasn't been sufficient for Demann, who has followed up with further letters to the estate, demanding to see its books, with belief that the estate is in control over full relevant financial documentation.

Having not gotten what it wanted, Demann next tried to trigger the arbitration provisions of its personal management agreement with Jackson, but according to the lawsuit, the estate has refused to submit the dispute to arbitration. Now, DeMann is seeking to compel it.

Branca wasn't immediately available for comment.
