Jackson Family Rep Hits Out At American Idol Singer's 'Pepsi Moment' Remark. 31-03-'11

A representative for Michael Jackson's family has taken aim at an American Idol hopeful who cracked a joke about the King of Pop's infamous hair burning incident during Wednesday night's (30Mar11) episode of the TV talent show.

The Thriller hitmaker suffered severe head burns in 1984 after filming for a Pepsi commercial went awry and pyrotechnic effects set his locks alight. The medication Jackson was prescribed to numb the pain of the accident is widely reported as having sparked his long running battle with drug addiction.

American Idol contestant James Durbin made reference to the mishap after his explosive performance on Wednesday night's show, when he voiced his fears at having his own "Pepsi moment".

He told host Ryan Seacrest, "I have a lot of hair spray in my hair to keep it from jumping around - so much so, the one thing I was worried about was having a 'Pepsi moment.'"

But the jibe did not go down well in the Jackson household and a family spokesperson claims patriarch Joe Jackson was particularly angered that producers failed to edit the insensitive remark from later airings of the programme.

The rep tells Tmz.com, "We were shocked to see this. It's nothing to make light of."

Michael Jackson's Business Manager Must Testify. 29-03-'11

Michael Jackson's former business manager, Tohme Tohme, must testify in the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, who is accused in Jackson's death, a judge ruled Monday.

Tohme's attorneys argued their client was not properly served the subpoena, but a process server testified she handed it to Tohme at his home March 3. A used car dealer testified Monday that he was with Tohme at an auto auction at the time.

"I am satisfied there was service in this case," said Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor after hearing both witnesses.

Pastor was more concerned about the argument that Tohme's testimony would be irrelevant to the Murray case.

Paul Takakjian, Tohme's attorney, said the defense was "tossing out a fishing line" without any knowledge that Tohme knew anything that would help their case.

Murray's attorneys argued that Tohme is a critical witness for their defense strategy to prove that Jackson gave himself the fatal dose of anesthesia that led to his June 25, 2009, death.

Tohme had "intimate knowledge of his finances, drug use, his habits" in his final months, defense lawyer Nareg Gourjian said.

Jackson's "financial difficulties at the time is clearly relevant to our assertion that Mr. Jackson self-administered himself with propofol," Gourjian said.

While the defense argument "seems to be a lot of speculation," Pastor said he would let the subpoena of Tohme stand since he was Jackson's business manager at the time of his death. He indicated he would later consider whether to limit the subjects on which Tohme can be questioned.

The defense indicated it wanted to question Tohme about the pressure placed on Jackson in his final months to prepare for the 50 shows he was to perform in London for AEG Live starting that July.

"He (Tohme) negotiated the AEG deal and other witnesses say Mr. Jackson was very angry about this," Gourjian said.

Tohme will not cooperate with the defense by giving them an interview ahead of his testimony, he said.

The court will consider a similar motion next week by Dr. Arnold Klein.

The defense contends the Beverly Hills dermatologist gave Jackson drugs that Murray did not know about in the weeks before his death.

The Los Angeles County coroner ruled Jackson's cause of death was "acute propofol intoxication" in combination with "the contributory affects of the benzodiazepines."

The court will hold a third day of jury selection next week to build up a pool of "hardship qualified" potential jurors -- those whose families, finances and jobs could withstand a two-month trial. The final jury selection process is set for May 4, with opening statements scheduled for May 9.

Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch Under Restoration. 29-03-'11

A small update on the state of Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch has surfaced – giving hope that the entire estate isn’t just being left to rot.

According to Colony Capital’s Tom Barrack, whose firm owns part of the rights to the 2,800 acre spread, the late Jackson’s former home is being well looked after.

“Our plans have been to work to restore it to its original greatness,” he told Bloomberg TV. “The place is amazing. It has not only the beautiful spirit and softness of Michael, but a legacy of a thousand years of Indian culture that had transacted upon it. We have just been restoring it, renovating it.”

Barrack added that they have no plans to commercialise the property and are simply in a holding pattern until Michael Jackson’s estate figures out what direction they would like to take the ranch in. As we reported last November, Michael’s children are in agreement that the place become ‘some kind of community park and center for animals’.

Judge To Decide On Records Of Demerol Treatments. 26-03-'11

A judge said Tuesday he will review medical records from Michael Jackson's longtime dermatologist before deciding whether the records should be turned over to defense attorneys seeking to show Jackson was addicted to the painkiller at the time of his death.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor will review the files from Dr. Arnold Klein that cover the last nine months of Jackson's life.

Klein is fighting the release of the medical records citing patient confidentiality. A few of Klein's records have already been turned over to coroner's officials who investigated Jackson's death.

Attorneys for Murray say they need the files to see if the records support their theory that Jackson was suffering from withdrawal from the painkiller Demerol when he died unexpectedly on June 25, 2009.

The defense contends Klein frequently injected Jackson with Demerol and the singer became addicted to the treatments.

"Due to Dr. Klein's actions, Mr. Jackson became physiologically and psychologically dependent on Demerol," Murray's attorneys wrote in a motion filed Monday. "Dr. Murray's right to this information in the criminal case greatly outweighs any privilege or privacy rights asserted by Dr. Klein pertaining to the records of Mr. Jackson who is now deceased."

The defense theorizes that if Jackson was suffering from withdrawal of Demerol before his death, that may have complicated his reactions to other medications.

Authorities have accused Murray of giving Jackson a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol, which should only ever be administered in hospital settings. His attorneys have said he did not give the singer anything that should have killed him.

Garo Ghazarian, attorney for Dr. Klein, said Tuesday the defense hadn't shown any evidence that Jackson was addicted to Demerol or that any of Klein's treatments were improper.

Pastor will review the files on April 6. Also at that time he will hear from an attorney for the Michael Jackson estate, who have not waived any of Jackson's privileges.

Trial Continues Over MJ Memorabilia. 25-03-'11

Michael Jackson had the right to withdraw his personal possessions from an auction scheduled to take place two months before he died, the founder of a Beverly Hills-based auction house told a jury Thursday.

Testifying in the trial of memorabilia collector Richard LaPointe's breach-of-contract suit against Julien's Auction House, Darren Julien denied assertions by LaPointe's attorney, Nicholas Hornberger, that the April 2009 event was a "no-reserve" auction and that LaPointe was entitled to various items in which he was the highest online bidder.

"I had always agreed with Michael Jackson that he could place reserves," Julien said. "We wouldn't be in business with celebrities if we objected that way. Everything we do gives the celebrity the final decision at the end of the day."

LaPointe's lawyers maintain he was the highest bidder for 14 pieces of Jackson memorabilia and that he is entitled to more than $300,000 in damages.

But attorney Miles J. Feldman, representing Julien's Auction House, contends that LaPointe is not entitled to any damages because the auction was canceled.

Earlier this week, LaPointe settled part of the case with Michael Jackson's estate. That accord calls for the Jackson estate to sell LaPointe 64 of the 80-plus items in dispute among the three parties.

The auction, which would have been the largest authorized sale of items associated with Jackson, was canceled after the singer reached a separate legal settlement in his own legal dispute with Julien's. Jackson died two months later in June 2009.

Michael's Physician Fires Publicist For Leaking Jury Selection Information. 25-03-'11

On the first day of his trial, Michael Jackson’s personal physician fired his publicist for leaking jury selection information to a celebrity gossip website.

On Wednesday, TMZ.com had posted what purported to be proposed defense questions for potential jurors, a leak that Dr. Conrad Murray’s attorney acknowledged came from their own publicist. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor said the questions were “bogus” but that he was concerned about how information on the Internet would affect the answers potential jurors give during jury selection.

Murray is accused of involuntary manslaughter for giving Jackson a fatal dose of the surgical anesthetic propofol.

Defense attorneys told Pastor in chambers that a media company hired by the defense had leaked six questions the company had suggested for the jury pool. None of the questions ended up in the final questionnaire, which Pastor earlier ordered sealed.

“It is an embarrassment,” Ed Chernoff, Murray’s attorney, told the judge. Chernoff apologized and said the company would be fired.

After the hearing, Chernoff confirmed that the employee was Miranda Sevcik, a Houston publicist who began working for Murray and his legal team two days after Jackson’s death.

Sevcik declined to comment, beyond wishing the defense well.

On Thursday, 159 potential jurors were sworn in and screened for financial hardship. Jury selection is expected to continue Friday. Testimony in the case is scheduled to begin in May.

Dr. Murray Targeting Jurors Who Take Responsibility. 24-03-'11

With jury selection beginning tomorrow in the manslaughter case involving Michael Jackson's death .... TMZ has learned ... Dr. Conrad Murray is targeting 12 men and/or women who take responsibility for their actions ... this according to sources who have seen the jury questionnaire.

One of the more revealing questions: "Do you believe patients have the responsibility to tell their doctors about their complete past and current social habits, including use of drugs, alcohol and prescription medications?"

A central part of Dr. Murray's defense is that Michael Jackson was a hard-core Propofol addict who hid his drug dependence from the doc ... thus Murray wasn't operating with full knowledge.

Other questions laser in on what people think of the case, with a heavy emphasis on social media.

-- Do you have a blog? If so, describe.

-- Are you active on social networks. If so, which?

The answers will lead Murray's lawyers to spontaneous comments of prospective jurors that could be more revealing than answers they give in court.

And the questionnaire asks: "Do you financially support others outside your immediate family?"

Dr. Murray has had money troubles that could make him sympathetic to certain jurors.

Other questions include: "At what age should a person be held accountable for their decisions, actions and consequences."

The defense is looking for people who believe in personal responsibility, such as small business owners.

R.I.P. Elizabeth Taylor (1932-2011). 23-03-'11

Elizabeth Taylor, a true friend and buddy to Michael Jackson, a legendary actress famed for her beauty and her charitable endeavors has died, her publicist told CNN Wednesday. She was 79.

Taylor died “peacefully today in Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles,” said a statement from her publicist. She was hospitalised six weeks ago with congestive heart failure, “a condition with which she had struggled for many years. Though she had recently suffered a number of complications, her condition had stabilized and it was hoped that she would be able to return home. Sadly, this was not to be.”

Ms. Taylor was a very courageous individual who was never afraid to stand up for what she believed in and, throughout the years, her friendship, love and loyalty to her friend Michael Jackson was no exception. She will be greatly missed.

Her family is asking today that, if you wish to send flowers or cards, please consider making a contribution to the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation instead.

Dr. Murray: Arnie Klein Made MJ A Demerol Addict. 23-03-'11

Dr. Conrad Murray's lawyers just filed blistering legal docs, claiming Dr. Arnold Klein -- Michael Jackson's longtime doctor and friend -- addicted him to Demerol and another powerful narcotic.

In legal papers obtained by TMZ, Murray's legal team claims Klein fuelled MJ's drug dependency by giving him scores of Demerol injections in the months prior to his death. TMZ broke the story ... in the 3 months before Jackson died, Dr. Klein gave MJ 51 Demerol injections.

The docs claim, "Due to Mr. Klein's actions, Mr. Jackson became physiologically and psychologically dependent on Demerol."

Murray's team wants Klein to produce all his medical records, claiming "Dr. Klein is a relevant and highly material witness to the defense."

Potential Jurors To Fill Out Questionnaire. 23-03-'11

About 350 prospective jurors for the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray will fill out a 27-page questionnaire about their knowledge of the case and other related issues, the judge said Tuesday.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor has ordered that the questionnaire be kept confidential, but prospective jurors will get a look at it during the jury selection process, which begins on Thursday.

Murray is accused of involuntary manslaughter in Michael Jackson’s 2009 death from an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol. He has pleaded not guilty and contends through his attorneys that Jackson gave himself the fatal dose.

However, prosecutors contend the Houston-based cardiologist was on the phone and distracted after administering the drug to Jackson and that he was busy talking and texting to girlfriends when he should have been monitoring his patient.

Prosecutors also believe Jackson was dead by the time Murray summoned help.

At a preliminary hearing in January, security guard Alberto Alvarez testified he was told to place vials of medicine in bags before calling 911.

Alvarez was the first security guard to reach the bedroom where Jackson had lapsed into unconsciousness. He testified that Murray was using one hand to pump on the singer's chest as he lay on the bed. Prosecutors and experts say CPR should always be done on a hard surface like the floor and not a bed.

Alvarez says Murray ordered him to place pill bottles, an IV bag and vials into a bag before he was told to call 911.

"He just grabbed a handful of bottles, or vials, and he instructed me to put them in a bag," Alvarez said.

While waiting for paramedics to arrive, Alvarez says Murray asked if anyone knew CPR and admitted that he had never performed the life-saving procedure before.

Paramedic Martin Blount, who was sent to Jackson's rented mansion testified that he saw Murray scoop up three bottles of lidocaine from the floor and put them into a bag during efforts to revive Jackson.

Blount testified that he was surprised to see the bottles since Murray had told paramedics he hadn't given Jackson any drugs.

Testimony in Murray's trial is expected to begin in May, and a prosecutor and a lawyer for the defense told the judge Tuesday that they expect the trial will be completed by the end of June.

Oxman Sets Record Straight, Theme Park Developer Bounced Check To MJ. 22-03-'11

A highly publicized movie deal between the developer of the proposed Festival Tennessee theme park and Michael Jackson went sour over a bounced check, according to the attorney for Michael’s father. Brian Oxman, attorney for Joe Jackson, told the Nashville Business Journal today that the film, called ‘The Way of the Unicorn’, failed when Dennis W. Peterson wrote Michael a $1 million check that bounced. “That’s as far as ‘The Way of the Unicorn’ ever went,” Oxman, a Los Angeles-based attorney, said by phone.

In a previous interview with the Business Journal, Peterson, CEO of Nevada-based Big International Group of Entertainment, said the deal fell through because of Michael’s court troubles and eventual death. Peterson has cited that deal as evidence of his ability to secure investors for the proposed Festival Tennessee development in Spring Hill, which he said would include two 4,000-room hotels and a water park.

William Craig, a former associate of Peterson and CEO of Orlando, Fla.-based Information Architects, previously told the Business Journal that the Jackson family was aware of Festival Tennessee — which is still seeking full zoning approval by Spring Hill officials — but was unaware of whether they were interested.

The Jackson family, according to Oxman’s account, had looked over the Festival Tennessee project and decided not to be involved.

Peterson — whose past, including a string of evictions, bounced checks and court judgments, was detailed in this previous Business Journal story — has not returned repeated calls, including one for this story, since making his initial comments promoting the project.

Oxman had no further comment on Peterson and said Joe Jackson is concentrating on raising money around the world for his son’s charitable interests.

Joe Can Move Forward With Suit Against Murray. 22-03-'11

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Johnson says in a tentative ruling that Joe Jackson can move forward with his wrongful death suit against cardiologist Conrad Murray over the death of his son. The judge issued his preliminary ruling Monday rejecting defense efforts to have the case dismissed. Johnson is scheduled to hear arguments Wednesday before making a final ruling.

“To the extent the matter is intended to be a motion to dismiss, it is denied,” Johnson wrote in his one-page tentative decision. The ruling also criticizes the format through which the defense documents were drawn up, calling it “distracting and confusing” and adding the admonition, “Do not use this method in the future.”

The lawsuit filed November 30 seeks unspecified damages against Murray, who has pleaded not guilty in a separate criminal case in which he has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the June 2009 death of Michael. In the suit, Joe names Las Vegas’ Applied Pharmacy services, which court records show sold Murray propofol during the month before his son’s death that was attributed to acute propofol intoxication.

The pharmacy is alleged to have sold Murray excessive amounts of propofol, a drug typically used in a clinical setting during surgery. Joe initially filed a wrongful death claim against Murray in U. S. District Court last June 25. However, a judge declined to hear the case and said it should be brought in Superior Court.

The complaint alleges Murray was negligent in administering propofol to Michael and that he did not tell paramedics that he gave the singer the drug.

Michael Jackson Estate, Collector Settle Over Memorabilia. 22-03-'11

A settlement was reached Monday between a collector and Michael Jackson’s estate regarding a canceled auction of the late singer’s memorabilia.

A jury trial will still take place to decide allegations by memorabilia collector Richard LaPointe of intentional interference with contractual relations and breach of contract against Julien’s Auction House.

LaPointe’s lawyer, Nicholas Hornberger, said the agreement calls for the Jackson estate to sell 64 of the more than 80 items in dispute between the three parties.

The auction would have been the largest authorized sale of items associated with Jackson. It was canceled in April 2009 after the singer reached a separate legal settlement in his own legal dispute with Julien’s. Jackson died two months later at age 50.

The items that were to be put on the auction block included Jackson’s large collection of antiques, decorative arts, costumes, music awards and other items that were once in his Neverland estate in Santa Barbara County.

LaPointe sued in October 2009, claiming ownership of items on which he bid online ahead of the auction. He was the only bidder for those items, including a replica classic automobile used by Jackson to provide transportation to celebrity guests at Neverland.

LaPointe also has one of the world’s biggest collections of Beatles memorabilia.

Chuckie Remixes Hollywood Tonight. 22-03-'11

Dutch house DJ, Chuckie is all set to play Miami Music Week and he's excited to debut a new project that he's very proud of.

"I did a Michael Jackson remix, which was really scary — to touch Michael Jackson vocals," Chuckie said. "I did this remix for this track 'Hollywood Tonight.' I couldn't say it for a minute; the label called me, and they said, 'You can't say nothing about this. It's kind of a secret project.' It's gonna come out anytime now."

'Hollywood Tonight' was originally produced by Teddy Riley for Jackson's posthumous album, MICHAEL. Chuckie's mix of the song will be the only official remix of the track.

"I will play it [in] Miami," Chuckie said. "I told them this is the best week to launch the remix. So it feels really good. I'm the only one remixing that Michael Jackson track, and they are considering it a single. For me, especially, it's an honor to remix the King of Pop because he died on my birthday."

So what kind of remix can we expect?

"I had to bring in the raucous," Chuckie confessed. "Yeah, I did the Chuckie flavor, but then again, I wanted to make it really musical, so I went progressive (house) on it."

Chuckie will perform twice at Miami Music Week - at the Cr2 Records Party at Wall Lounge on Wednesday, and then headlining "No Sugar Added" at Nikki Beach on Friday. You can watch a video of Chuckie's interview by clicking here.

Michael Jackson's Dad Calls For New Probe Into Death. 21-03-2011

Michael Jackson's father has renewed calls for a federal probe into his son's death based on his belief that a conspiracy was at work.
Joe Jackson, in Madrid to promote a worldwide tour of the hit Spanish musical Forever King Of Pop, said he believes Dr Conrad Murray was acting on behalf of other people involved in Michael's career and said the late singer had warned his family he would be killed over the publishing rights to hit songs such as ‘Thriller’ and ‘Billie Jean’.

"I want to get the other people that's involved, not just Dr Murray. That's why I'm trying to get a federal investigation, so they can grab them all," the Scotsman quoted Joe as saying.

He characterized Murray as ‘just the fall guy’, but refused to say who else he thought might be to blame for the death of his superstar son.

"I'm not calling names, but they know who they are. Michael knew that something was going to happen to him before it happened," said Joe.

Joseph Says: Dr. Conrad Is 'A Scapegoat' For Jackon's 'Close Circle'. 19-03-'11

Joe Jackson, father of deceased pop star Michael Jackson, clasps his hands together during an interview with Reuters in Madrid March 18, 2011. A week before jury selection begins in the manslaughter trial of Michael Jackson's doctor, the late singer's father renewed calls for a federal probe into his son's death based on his belief a conspiracy was at work.

He also believes that Dr Conrad Murray, who denies illegally giving Jackson a fatal dose of propofol, is “an underling, a scapegoat”.

He added: “That’s why I want a federal investigation to get the others. I have evidence. I can’t say names, but it’s his close circle.”

He claimed the signature on Jacko’s will – which he was written out of – was a fake and denied accusations that he beat his children.

He alleged: “I was strict, but I never hit them. If they ever took a slap, it was from my wife... not me.”

Gary Contracts LGR Partners To Take Care Of Michael Jackson Events. 18-03-'11

Gary has contracted with a newly formed group to host a multi-venue festival in the city honoring Michael Jackson. The Gary Board of Public Works approved a one-year contract Wednesday with an Addison, Ill.-based group LGR Partners. The contract is renewable up to four years. Under its proposal, LGR would host an August festival commemorating Michael’s summer birth and death.

City spokeswoman LaLosa Burns called LGR’s proposal of a Legends Weekend “inviting.” She said hosting such events can be “a very good economic development tool” for beleaguered cities such as Gary. The group could relieve the city of celebration duties it took on following Michael’s death.

The city arranged a large-scale memorial at the U.S. Steelyard weeks after Michael died and another at the Jackson family home on the one-year anniversary of his death.

Under the city’s contract, LGR would front all of costs of hosting its events, including execution and clean-up. City lawyer Susan Severtson described LGR as “special events coordinators, marketing experts.” She added “We’re not paying them,”. The project will be funded on private sponsorships and investments, LGR partner and spokesman Jeff Funderburg said.

Under the deal, once LGR covers its expenses, Severtson said, it then would donate 20 percent of any profits back to the city. Severtson did not provide a copy of the contract, saying it would be fully executed when signed by Mayor Rudy Clay, who was in Indianapolis Wednesday. She said the city wants to review the group’s incorporation documents before finalizing the deal.

Funderburg said the group, incorporated in Delaware, recently formed specifically for the Jackson proposal. He said LGR also has been in talks about hosting a June memorial with the so-called Jackson Family Foundation, the group trying to build a $300 million shrine to the Jacksons in the Steel City. “We’re supportive of each other’s interests,” Funderburg said of the foundation.

Severtson said the new contract was not in response to a bid from the city. Rather, she said LGR approached city officials several months ago with the plan. “It sounded like something we wanted to try out,” she said. “Hopefully it will be successful.”

Dr. Murray: Key Witnesses Are Undermining Me! 17-03-'11

Lawyers for some key witnesses in Dr. Conrad Murray's manslaughter trial over the death of Michael Jackson went to court today, trying to avoid giving up what could be critical evidence in the case.

Lawyers for Dr. Arnold Klein -- Jackson's longtime doc -- and AEG honcho Randy Phillips asked the judge to quash subpoenas issued by Dr. Murray, requiring them to produce information about MJ that the defense claims is relevant to his death.

Murray wants to find out exactly what drugs and treatment Klein gave MJ in the months before his death. TMZ reported Klein injected Michael with Demerol 51 times in the 3 months that preceded his death.

As for Phillips, we've learned Murray's team wants to know what interactions AEG had with Michael -- in particular, AEG's expectations about Michael's rehearsal schedule and its involvement in selecting Dr. Murray as Michael's doc.

Lawyers for 5 other witnesses, including Tohme Tohme, Michael's former advisor, also tried to quash their subpoenas.
