Kirsty Meakin Talks About How Michael Jackson Has Been The Biggest Inspiration In Her Life. 31-12-'13

“YOU made me who I am from the words you sang”. Kirsty Meakin’s tattoo reflects the importance she places on Michael Jackson, the man who, when the pressure was on to conform, to give in to the bullying, to blend, spirit crushed, into the background, encouraged her to be herself – to be different.

Jackson has been a constant source of inspiration to Kirsty. As a girl, his lyrics would both console and cajole.

When she was miles from home, partaking in some of the toughest competitions, his picture sat on her table.

And in her constant urge to change direction, his inventiveness was the exemplar she followed.

No wonder then that when he died four years ago, her first instinct was to jump on the next plane and head for LA.

“Michael’s a massive inspiration for me,” she says. “Without him, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.”

The person she is can be best described as one of the leading nail artists in the world.

Immortal World Tour Is “Next Best Thing To A Michael Jackson Concert,” Says Sugarfoot. 30-12-'13

Jonathan MoffettYou have to take the musician Jonathan “Sugarfoot” Moffett at his word when he dubs Michael Jackson – The Immortal World Tour by Cirque du Soleil, as “the next best thing to a Michael Jackson concert that the audience will witness”.

After all, the drummer performed and toured with the late King of Pop and the Jackson brothers for more than 34 years and infuses a similar dynamism into Cirque du Soleil’s largest grossing production, which premiered in Montreal in 2011. The Immortal World Tour will be staged at the Dubai World Trade Centre from today until January 14. The show is the highlight of the 2014 Dubai Shopping Festival and is being organised by Duvent, an arm of Meraas Leisure and Entertainment.

“Everyone who comes to the show is there to see and feel the Michael experience,” says Moffett, who began playing for the late Jackson and the Jackson brothers in 1979.

“The show will be more than what they expected. They will feel Michael’s spirit in the hall, feel his presence through the music, dances, the video we present and the energy in the show. They will want to see it more than once.”

The concert is a collaboration between Cirque and the artists who worked with Michael Jackson on albums and live shows.

After his sudden death in 2009, weeks before his sold-out This Is It run of shows in London, the Cirque du Soleil team approached Jamie King, who had accompanied the star on his Dangerous World Tour, to conceptualise and direct a show that would keep his memory alive for millions of fans around the world.

Moffett, or “Footery” as Jackson fondly called him during the HIStory World Tour in 1996-1997, was brought in along with other long-serving band members

“We have been seasoned on Michael,” he says.

“We know his level of perfectionism and we all work on that level and give our best in that given moment. That was his expertise.”

The Jackson family gave Moffett a major professional break when they included him in the Destiny Tour in 1979.

“Michael used to give himself up in every show and that was a lesson. He would get the greatest performance out of himself and others on stage and during rehearsals.”

About 65 acrobats, dancers and musicians bring together everything Jackson was known for in the rock style theatrical show. King says they wanted to develop a concert that would take the audience inside the performer’s head. “We are reliving, in the most Cirque-spectacular way, the moments we love from when we have seen him perform young,” he says. “The iconic costumes, dances and acrobatics, everything is larger than life.”

“All of it [is] ending with a humanitarian message on a stage that we will convert into the famous Neverland Ranch.”

Staying true to the diversity that the members who toured with Michael had come to expect, Cirque gathered performers from all over the world for the concert, which took eight months to put together. The show runs for 90 minutes and features 35 of Jackson’s memorable numbers.

“There is no Michael impersonator,” says King. “No one can replace MJ that way, but what we could do honestly and respectfully is to make a show that represents him in the best possible way. They have the same passion and drive he had. It’ll be like watching 65 Michael's on stage.”

Moffett says he is looking forward to playing his personal favourite Smooth Criminal, along with several other hits favoured by the audience including Can You Feel It, Wanna Be Startin’ Something, They Don’t Care About Us, Man in the Mirror and Dance Machine by the Jackson 5.

“I love all of his songs, even the slow ones,” Moffett says. “I relate to his music, the same way he related to my sense of playing the drums. He always said that when I played it made him want to dance.”

He says traveling with the cast and crew allows him to relive a part of the experience he had while on tour with the most successful entertainer that ever was.

“So many people, so many elements, it is more like a traveling community,” he says.

“And it has so much, right from the staging, the instruments, lighting. I cannot even being to explain the magnitude. You feel like you are in downtown New York with all the traffic and energy going,” he laughs.

The show has proved a popular one, earning US$340 million (Dh1.25billion) for Cirque du Soleil and the Michael Jackson Company since performances began in 2011 in Montreal.

“The reception to the show is fantastic,” says Moffett. “Children and adults alike come to watch. They dress up as MJ, the audience tries to dance as MJ. His whole spirit permeates the area in the cities we go to.

“This is our way of saying goodbye,” King says.

“In a spectacular and grand way as MJ would have wanted it. To create and go beyond bigger and grieve through a creative process.”

Never Before Seen Footage Of Michael Jackson’s HIStory World Tour Rehearsals Appears Online. 27-12-'13

Approximately twenty minutes of never-before-seen footage filmed during Michael Jackson’s private HIStory World Tour rehearsals has appeared online today.

The tour, which kicked off in September 1996 and finished more than a year later in October 1997, visited 58 cities, hosting 82 concerts in 35 countries across 5 continents while reaching an audience of 4.5 million fans and grossing $165 million.

Much like the This Is It film, the newly-leaked footage takes you behind the scenes of Jackson’s rehearsal process, showcasing the King of Pop singing, dancing and brainstorming with his collaborative partners.

The footage also features candid interviews with the a number of tour personnel including choreographers, drummer Jonathan “Sugarfoot” Moffett, and co-director Kenny Ortega.

“It’s always a partnership with Michael,” says Ortega in the footage. “I was co-directing, co-conceptualising and co-staging… I had a strong partner there who really had belief in the potential of this tour from the very start.”

And as with This Is It, preparations for the HIStory World tour were a race against the clock as opening night approached.

“The challenge I think was in the physical time we had,” explains Ortega. “Could we get everything built? Could we practice with everything in time…”

HIStory Tour Rehearsals

As far as concert tours in the mid-90s went, Jackson’s HIStory was a logistical monster. The sound and lighting rigs were enormous. There were several hydraulic-powered people launchers, which Jackson called “toasters”, built into the stage. There was the “MJ-2040″ rocket ship from which Jackson would triumphantly emerge dressed as a gold-plated space soldier seemingly inspired by C3PO from Star Wars. There was a giant “cherry picker” crane rigged with a high-powered fan, smoke and lights that would take Jackson out above his screaming audience during the show. And there was a military tank that would invade the stage in a moving theatrical rendition of “Earth Song”.

“We looked at each other kind of like; Do we dare actually build a tank? Where will it come from and how will we get it up there?” remembers Ortega. “So we basically designed the stage around being able to accomplish this feat.”

Although there do not appear to be any plans in place to officially release this captivating rehearsal footage, there has been some work done on preparing high-definition footage of the HIStory World Tour itself for a possible 3D cinema presentation.

AEG LiveAEG To Katherine Jackson YOU LOST ... Move On With Your Life! 26-12-'13

Katherine Jackson is not only WASTING HER TIME by appealing the AEG wrongful death case ... she's also making a mockery of the legal system ... so says AEG.

AEG just responded to Katherine's request for a new trial -- after Katherine argued that jurors were bamboozled because the jury instructions blocked them from being able hold AEG responsible for Conrad Murray's actions AFTER he was hired to take care of Michael Jackson.

Katherine had claimed that even if Murray was competent when AEG hired him, they should still be liable because he proved reckless and irresponsible during the months leading up to Jackson's death, and AEG did nothing to stop it.

But AEG claims Katherine is simply grasping at straws ... and her appeal is a pathetic last ditch effort from a desperate woman.

The entertainment giant also argues that the jury instructions were crystal clear and perfectly fair, taken directly from the California Civil Jury instruction guide book ... so too bad, so sad ... but that's the way the law works.

Ultimately, the judge will decide who's right on January 3rd ... when the case is due back in court.

TJ Jackson Asks Judge To Dismiss Cousin’s Custody Petition Of Michael Jackson’s Kids. 26-12-'13

Michael Jackson’s nephew TJ has asked a U.S. judge to dismiss a petition filed by a relative challenging his guardianship of the King of Pop’s three children.

TJ Jackson, 35, was placed in charge of Prince, Paris and Blanket in July, 2012, following a family feud, which was sparked by the apparent disappearance of family matriarch Katherine Jackson, who had previously been appointed the guardian of her grandkids following the Thriller hitmaker’s 2009 death.

She subsequently agreed to co-parent the youngsters with TJ, but the pair has since been faced with a new fight from Anthony Jackson II, who has filed his own legal papers asking to be named the children’s new guardian.

However, TJ claims Anthony, who is said to be his cousin, has failed to properly outline the reasons for his petition and he is therefore requesting the challenge be thrown out of court, reports TMZ.com.

In his documents, TJ, son of Tito Jackson, reveals he and Katherine are doing well as co-guardians and insists Prince, Paris and Blanket are happy with the arrangements.

Prince JacksonMichael Jackson's Eldest Son Takes To The Water In Hawaii. 26-12-'13

He's in Honolulu, Hawaii for a Christmas break with his family and Prince Michael Jackson was eager to show off his prowess in the ocean.

The 16-year-old eldest child of the late pop superstar Michael Jackson took to the water in a kayak wearing a pair of blue swim trunks and a red safety vest as he and some pals enjoyed the sunshine on Christmas Eve.

Despite a tumultuous year for the family, which saw his younger sister slashing her wrists in early June, Prince appeared to be in good spirits, laughing and joking with his friends.

Even taking a tumble into the water didn't dampen his spirits and Prince gamely climbed back into the vessel.

Ricky LawsonDrummer Ricky Lawson, 59, Dies After Aneurism. 25-12-'13

Studio drummer Ricky Lawson, a collaborator with musicians including Michael Jackson (Bad and Dangerous Tour), Eric Clapton, Phil Collins and Whitney Houston, has died at a suburban Los Angeles hospital following a brain aneurism. He was 59.

Lawson’s uncle, Paul Riser of Detroit, said Tuesday that Lawson was removed from life support 10 days after the aneurism diagnosis and died around 7 p.m. Monday.

Lawson was being treated at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center in Long Beach, California, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Los Angeles.

The Detroit native learned to play drums at age 16 and jumped into the music business even before graduating from Cooley High School, developing into one of the nation’s top studio musicians in the 1980s.

His work appears on Houston’s version of “I Will Always Love You.” He also performed with Al Jarreau, George Benson, Bette Midler, Quincy Jones and many others.

A founding member of the Yellowjackets, Lawson won a Grammy Award in 1986 for R&B instrumental performance for the jazz-fusion group’s hit “And You Know That.”

He became disoriented during a performance on Dec. 13 and was diagnosed with an aneurism.

Drummer Questlove Jenkins of The Roots called Lawson “the master” on Twitter Dec. 18 in a message saying, “praying for his recovery.”

Drummer Sheila E. tweeted Tuesday: “We lost a great man, drummer, father, brother and son. mr Ricky Lawson. He passed away yesterday. Please pray for his family. we will miss u.”

Mixtape Review: DJ Jazzy Jeff & Michael Jackson – “He’s The King, I’m The DJ". 23-12-'13

DJ Jazzy Jeff and Michael JacksonI never thought I’d indirectly start a Mixtape blog, but this particular mix by DJ Jazzy Jeff, “He’s the King, I’m the DJ” of Michael Jackson’s greatest hits is so incredibly well-crafted that it has to be shared. It is a testament to the beautiful alchemy that results when one of history’s greatest Hip-Hop DJs eulogizes one of history’s greatest pop icons: musical gold dust, almost intoxicating in its breathtaking craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Here’s the free link …or you can stream it here.

(and yes, if you’re wondering: Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me” got in there too–nudge, nudge, wink, wink).

This is hands-down one of my top five favorite mixtapes of all time. I can’t really confirm this, but I assume that from hearing this nearly-perfect mix down of MJ’s most legendary tracks, Jazzy Jeff must have been granted access to the actual track-separated studio master recordings. No lie: he’s actually able to scratch the vocal track to “ABC” using his famous looping technique, and then bring the beat in perfectly as if nothing happened. Brilliant!

Plus: having presumably mixed it from master recordings, the sound quality of “He’s the King, I’m the DJ” is superb. Too superb maybe: my landlord got a bit cross with me tonight due to the incredibly loud volume booming from my paper-thin apartment at 11 pm on a Friday night (c’mon man!)–but I think he ‘understood’ as well: the wry smile on his face dictated that he was just doing his job, but in reality he would have likely been as ensnared as I , had he been in my shoes. You really have to listen to this mixtape LOUD on a good set of speakers: it’s that good.

“He’s the King, I’m the DJ” was hand-mixed and released not too long after Michael’s death, and to me represents one of the world’s greatest hip-hop DJs at his finest–giving a lovingly-crafted musical eulogy to one of the lost soldiers–with a tear-jerking acapella of “Ben”. following the irony-soaked, ‘go-toward-the-light’ sentiments of “Going Back to Indiana” to bring down the fucking house with class, reverence and style.

Sides also vary by day and include a long list humble home-cooked classics: sweet potatoes, spaghetti, corn bread, mac and cheese, and much more. For dessert, our server recommends the house specialty: fat-free, sugar-free banana pudding.

On a busy Saturday afternoon, husband-and-wife duo Jacqueline and Nathaniel Phillips keep trays of barbecue and home style sides coming out of the kitchen to accommodate a sizable party. A few individuals wander in for a late lunch, and servers clad in button-ups and black ties usher out hot plates of food.

“It’s the same way here. Everyone’s always welcome,” Phillips told Gut Check in a past interview. “We want people to feel like part of the family and enjoy themselves while they’re eating. And hopefully this time next year we’ll be opening a Yummies 2!”

Fire At Bollywood Artress Sridevi’s House Destroys Michael Jackson Painting. 23-12-'13

Michael Jackson PaintingBollywood couple Sridevi and Boney Kapoor’s house has been damaged by fire rendering it inhabitable.

On Saturday, a fire broke out at the veteran actress’ Lokhandwala bungalow and damaged a portion of the house including precious items.

The flames reportedly engulfed the actress’ bedroom, which housed several of her belongings. Apart from her wardrobe, her valuable artworks were also engulfed in the fire.

The actress, who is a skilled painter, had gifted daughter Jhanvi a Michael Jackson painting, which was damaged in the untoward incident.

“Yes, amongst the damages is Sridevi’s painting of Michael Jackson,” the actress’ manager told the Times of India, confirming the news.

The flames caused due to a short circuit was said to be a minor one as one fire engine was used to bring the situation under control. However, the fire has left the posh mansion largely inhabitable forcing the Bollywood family to look for an alternative.

The family had initially moved to the Kapoor home, but is now said to be looking for a new habitat due to space issues.

“The home is now inhabitable. It will have to be redone entirely which will take months. Though they spent the night at Boney’s brother Sanjay Kapoor’s home, they cannot all live there for long due to space constraints,” said a source to Mid Day.

At the time of the incident, Sridevi was present in the house along with daughters Jhanvi and Khushi.

Katherine JacksonKatherine Removes Fund Request For Documentary. 21-12-'13

The fundanything.com page for “Remembering Michael” is kaput, gone, vanished from the company’s website completely. So much for this latest attempt to exploit Michael Jackson’s memory.

Earlier Friday: The end may be near for Katherine Jackson’s FundAnything appeal. I told you first and exclusively that Mrs. Jackson (with silent partners Sonia Lowe and Howard Mann) had put up a crowdfunding drive to raise money for a documentary called “Remembering Michael.”

The appeal offered donors several different options from $10 up to $6,000. For different amounts, donors could receive in exchange a Michael Jackson baseball hat, or more elaborate memorabilia like photographs or online access to the doc.

Alas, it is all gone now. All the items have been removed. All that’s left is a chance to donate to the film. So far Mrs. Jackson has raised a paltry $4,275– and a lot of ire. Jackson fans, who are very astute at this point, regard the whole thing as a scam. They say so in the comments section of the FundAnything page.

Released: 18-12-2013

The Maestro - The Definitive A-Z Of His Life & Times Volume I: A-J Book CoverMichael Jackson was no ordinary performer. From the moment he first moved to the rhythm of the Jackson family's old creaky washing machine he was destined to do big things. No one back then however, could have possibly predicted what would happen over the next five decades when the name of Michael Jackson would be one of the most recognisable in the history of popular music the world over. Not only would he have four consecutive number one records with his brothers the Jackson 5, but he would go on to have the biggest album of all time with Thriller and be recognised as the number one charity donor.

From the author of the best selling book Michael Jackson For The Record, Chris Cadman brings you Michael Jackson's remarkable 'Life & Times' through his music, his performances, his interviews his achievements and his charity endeavours. Read about the significant people in his life and the many film offers that came his way that sadly never came to fruition. Plus discover his never ending devotion to children's charities and the less unfortunate around the world. This is Michael Jackson The Maestro - The Definitive A - Z, Volume 1: A-J.

A good majority of the songs can be found in the books I co-authored with Craig Halstead: Michael Jackson For The Record Revised & Expanded being the last edition. However, for the A-Z I have discovered new information and trivia, backed by many quotes from Michael over the years. The main bulk of the new content will rely on major stories and events from Michael’s five decades in the music business.

Every dedicated moment has been spent trying to get this book as accurate as possible for the community of Michael Jackson fans around the world. It was impossible to include everything; some fans may wonder why certain events or news items were left out, but the decision came down to choice in the end. That said Michael Jackson The Maestro: The Definitive A – Z will be released in two volumes due to the amount of information covered.

For this particular book remixes and most alternative versions have been left out due mainly to space and for the third edition of Michael Jackson For The Record Revised & Expanded due in 2015.

I hope you all enjoy this first volume and it represents a good proportion of Michael’s life and times. I hope it proves a pleasant read.

Stitch Encounter To Replace Captain EO At Tokyo Disney Resort. 21-12-'13

With the actual attraction name yet to be announced/confirmed, the Oriental Land Company (OLC) today announced that it will be closing ‘Captain EO’ on June 30, 2014 to make way for a new attraction to debut at Tokyo Disneyland.

The new attraction will be akin to ‘Stitch Encounter’ at Hong Kong Disneyland and ‘Stitch Live!’ at Walt Disney Studios Paris in that it will allow up to 160 guests to ‘communicate with Stitch, who is in outer space, in real time over the theater’s large screen. The entire family will enjoy the fun-filled conversations with the mischievous Stitch.’

Captain EO, which returned to the resort on July 1, 2010, was initially meant to close on June 30, 2011, but temporarily granted a reprieve.

At an estimated cost just north of $19 million US, the new attraction is slated to open in summer 2015. Note concept art provided is from Hong Kong Disneyland and may not represent the final attraction at Tokyo Disneyland.

Celine Dion Says Michael Jackson Asked Her Advice About Playing Vegas. 20-12-'13

Celine DionEver since the launch of her first Las Vegas show, A New Day, back in 2003, Celine Dion has been credited with making it acceptable — and even desirable — for big-name stars to perform regularly in Sin City. And while the diva won’t take all the credit for the fact that now acts ranging from Shania Twain to Motley Crue all have residencies in Vegas — and Britney Spears is about to start one — she will say that her show served as research material for stars who were interested in exploring the possibility.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Celine says that numerous stars — “Michael Jackson, Prince, I can’t name them all” — had all come to see A New Day when it first launched, because they wanted to see if it might be a viable option for them, too.

“They were all interested — like, ‘How is it?’” she tells the paper. “They were very curious about whether it was really possible to do it in Vegas.” And so what did Celine tell them? The same thing she says she’d tell Britney if the younger singer asked her: “It’s a great opportunity to be a parent, to raise your children and to be the entertainer you want to be.”

Celine’s next series of Vegas dates will begin December 30 in her current self-titled show at Caesars Palace. The Times reports that she plans to add a handful of songs from her new album Loved Me Back to Life to the set.
