Galella’s Candid MJ Photo. 30-04-'14

The paparazzi have become synonymous with celebrity culture. They spend their waking hours searching for—and at times, stalking—the individuals who have forfeited personal privacy for fame and fortune. But before the extreme antics of today’s camera-wielding paparazzo, there was Ron Galella, “Godfather of the U.S. paparazzi culture.”

Galella leapt from bushes, lurked in corners, and once even followed Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis to Greece, posing as a sailor to snap a photo the former First Lady in a bikini. Through the lawsuits, restraining orders (by Jackie O) and a broken jaw (thanks to Marlon Brando,) Galella quickly gained a reputation as the “Paparazzo Extraordinaire.”

In conjunction with a “digital gallery” of unpublished images on display at District M in the ROW NYC hotel, a new publication, Ron Galella New York (Damiani, June 2014), compiles Galella’s candid's of Michael Jackson, Andy Warhol, Diane von Furstenberg, and Cher, among others.

To see a sneak peak at the many surprised faces the legendary paparazzo captured go here, Michael’s photo is #2 and was snapped in 1986. The monochrome shot captures him with Sean Lennon and Yoko Ono at a New York subway, possibly during the filming of the ‘BAD’ short film.

Fan Party For Michael’s Birthday. 26-04-'14

For a second year running MJFFC will be hosting the virtual birthday party for Michael Jackson, which allows fans around the world to celebrate together! Read on for full details provided to us from MJFFC:

On Michael’s Birthday on the 29th August 2014, it will be possible for fans from around the world to once again participate in MJ party music enabled chatrooms and even appear in a live video feed, from the comfort of their own home (or wherever else they have a decent internet connection!).

Various fan groups are involved and the free party will be open to all Michael Jackson fans.

Just like last year, the party will run for 3 days with the live video being broadcast in separate bite size chunks, for approximately 48 hours from 12noon GMT on August 28, 2014 (the first country to see in Michael’s birthday) until August 30, 2014 at 12noon GMT (the final country to see out Michael’s birthday).

MJFFC Birthday Party

Theme

We spent months coming up with this years theme, and we are so excited about it! Michael was always an innovator and loved to try new things, along with its use in THIS IS IT, we wanted to broadcast as much of this years party… IN 3D!

In order to make the 3D as accessible as possible for all fans, we will be using the 80’s style anaglyph version of 3D (don’t be put off by this, our tests so far look great!). No specialist equipment will be needed, just some of those red/cyan 3D glasses, these can normally be found in various 3D DVD/Blu-Ray releases, and magazines, you never know you might even have a spare few pairs somewhere around the house! If you still cannot find any, they are normally available cheaply online. Just remember to get the red/cyan anaglyph version!

Host a global MJ and broadcast it live

Again we will be looking for any MJ events that are going to be showing during the live #MJGBP2014 video broadcast (28th-30th August), so that we can dip into your live feed and get your event in the main broadcast to show fans around the world. If you want to broadcast from your event, or have any questions about how you might be able to contribute, please visit www.mjglobalbirthdayparty.com/apply.

Send in your pre-recorded videos

Also like last year, if you cannot make the live party, why not send us a short video message to Michael. You can send it to us directly or upload it yourself to YouTube with the tag “#MJGBP2014” and we will add it to our playlist, we might even be able to broadcast it live at some point during the party!

Xscape CD Album CoverSony Offers Free Downloads Of 'Xscape' For Hi-Res Audio. 24-04-'14

Integrators can use Sony's hi-res 'Xscape' giveaway to lure customers to high-resolution audio (HRA). Sony Music Entertainment is releasing the new Michael Jackson album 'Xscape' on May 13.

Sony Mobile customers will get to enjoy the album free of charge on select new devices including the Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z1S.

Oh whoop-de-doo, a pristine rendering of a recently-uncovered work in an inferior audio quality.

But … Sony just announced last week that it would also offer a free download of 'Xscape'—this one in an HRA format—for buyers of Sony hi-res audio products. Sony announced today a slew of new hi-res products and plans to use the Xscape giveaway in a big promotion for the line.

Sony plans a big push around this promotion, so dealers should prepare to use the hype to lure music-loving customers to the hi-res world.

Lake County Deals Properties Near Jackson Gary Home. 24-04-'14

Lake County officials are taking the first step in what could be a chance for a new homeowner to live near where The Jackson 5 grew up.

The Lake County Board of Commissioners voted Wednesday to give the city of Gary nine abandoned properties on the city’s Jackson Street.

Lake County Attorney John Dull said the properties are close to The Jackson 5 boyhood home near 23rd Avenue and Jackson Street.

Gary has made several attempts to capitalize on the life and legacy of Michael Jackson and his family, who grew up there before moving on to fame and fortune in California.

Dull said the abandoned homes and lots were acquired by the county over the years, after the original owners failed to pay their property taxes.

He said the city will have an outside group rehabilitate the houses for eventual resale to new owners.

Gary Indiana

Gary officials would not comment specifically about the property transfer, but they plan to make an announcement in May about a project.

“I can say that this is a good thing,” Gary Communications Director Chelsea Whittington said.

Dull said as part of the transfer, the properties will pass through a nonprofit organization called the Lake Redevelopment Corp. Tramel Raggs is president of the corporation. Raggs is the commissioners’ special assistant and son of Gary City Clerk Suzette Raggs.

Commissioner Mike Repay, D-Hammond, the corporation’s vice president, said he helped form it in 2010 as a necessary instrument under state law to move tax delinquent properties from government to private ownership.

Repay said the corporation became involved in the Jackson Street properties to speed their transfer to Gary before a deadline to apply for a federal house rehabilitation grant.

Marlon, Tito, Jackie, Jermaine and Michael Jackson, who became known to the world as The Jackson 5, were playing together as early as 1965 at high school talent shows in Gary, as were many young bands influenced by Detroit’s Motown hits.

The Jacksons’ performances eventually got the attention of record labels and Detroit itself. Michael Jackson went on to win 13 Grammy awards and was credited with 750 million record sales worldwide before his death in 2009.

There was a proposal in 2010 to create a $300 million museum and arts center complex in Gary around the King of Pop’s legacy.

Valerie WassCourt Won't Review Michael Jackson Doctor's Case. 24-04-'14

The California Supreme Court refused Wednesday to review the involuntary manslaughter conviction of Michael Jackson's doctor, rejecting his lawyer's petition without comment.

The decision by the state's highest court was the latest stop on Dr. Conrad Murray's legal odyssey. A state appeals court upheld his conviction earlier this year and then refused to reconsider its decision.

Attorney Valerie Wass said Murray will take his fight to federal court. "We're greatly disappointed, but we intend to pursue this in federal court," Wass said.

She said she telephoned Murray with the news and, "He said, 'The fight is not over.' "

Authorities said Murray gave Jackson a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol in 2009 while the singer prepared for a series of comeback concerts.

Murray was convicted in 2011 and served two years in jail. He was released in October because of a change in California law requiring nonviolent offenders to serve their sentences in county jails and as a result of credits for good behavior.

The six-week trial focused on Murray's care of Jackson, including nightly doses of propofol to help the entertainer sleep.

The earlier appellate court decision said, "The evidence demonstrated that Mr. Jackson was a vulnerable victim and that (Murray) was in a position of trust, and that (Murray) violated the trust relationship by breaching standards of professional conduct in numerous respects."

Since his release, Murray has been traveling and spending time with family, "trying to get his life back together." Wass said.

The federal appeal she plans to file will focus on media coverage of the trial and exposure of the unsequestered jury to the Internet, Wass said. Murray has maintained throughout his appeals that the jury should have been sequestered because of the flood of publicity surrounding the case.

Recreated LEGO Album Covers. 23-04-'14

Italian designer Marco Sodano is known for using LEGO blocks to create artwork, but this time around he has created LEGO block albums. He used LEGO blocks to recreate famous album covers from Nirvana to Michael Jackson.

MJ Lego

Some are tricky to make out the faces of those featured on the covers, but others are extremely distinct. For example, in the iconic Beatles' Abbey Road album cover that he recreated, it is hard to make out their faces because they are so small in comparison to their surroundings. However, Rihanna's Loud album cover is a close up of her face so Marco had a larger canvas to work with.

The covers are very abstract and blurred, but the fact that Marco was able to create these with LEGO bricks is astonishing.

Quincy JonesQuincy Jones On His 6 Decade Career. 23-04-'14

Michael Jackson’s legendary producer, 81, talks Rob Garratt through an incredible six-decade career ahead of the return of Dubai Music Week.

You’re a man known for spotting great talent first – what do you see? Blinks [clicks fingers]. It’s the first instinct, that’s the best way to go. You’ve got to trust your instincts, man. I’ve always trusted them, and it’s been unbelievable.

As a producer, how do you approach such diverse personalities as, say Michael Jackson and Frank Sinatra? It’s to give them whatever they don’t have – and to pull out what they don’t want to pull out. It takes love. I remember recording Thriller… on ‘The Lady in My Life’ I said “Michael, I want you to beg on this one.” He said “whaaat?” He made me close the curtains because he was ashamed, but he did it.

Interesting you bring up Thriller – I don’t need to tell you it’s the best-selling album ever. Do you think any album could ever top it? No. Do we have a record business? Not like that.

Do you think it’s right that Michael’s leftover demos are being released on a ‘new’ album 'Xscape', next month? I don’t think so, but that’s a private, personal move. I couldn’t do that, no. We went through 800 songs to get nine.

Probably impossible, but can you pick a greatest memory? You can’t compare the experiences – on the road with Sinatra, with Ray Charles as a kid – and with Michael… we never partied, not like that.

So who partied the hardest? Sinatra, Ray Charles… Man, you can’t mess with those two. With Frank it was like walking to another planet, man, we had so much fun. Musically and as human beings.

Who are the most promising stars of today? We’ve got some good ones. I like Ludacris, Drake, Mary J Blige, Nicki Minaj, Bruno Mars, John Legend – they’ve got music involved somewhere.

Any advice for wannabe stars? Take the ten best singers you’ve heard ever – and that’s a very personal choice already – put them on one CD and sing along. From all eras.

And what’s the best advice you’ve ever received? I got a lot of advice – you have to. My biggest fear was always that I’d get an opportunity that I was not prepared for. When Sinatra called me, imagine how that would feel if I got with him and wasn’t ready, musically? He’d have killed me. To get a big gig and to mess it up – I’d shoot myself if it happened.

Who do you wish you’d had the opportunity to work with? Marvin [Gaye] and Stevie [Wonder] – but they said I was too jazzy. Marvin wanted me to work on What’s Going On.

NBC To Premiere New Jackson's Song During iHeartRadio Music Awards Broadcast. 23-04-'14

A new Michael Jackson song will premiere during NBC’s broadcast of the iHeartRadio Music Awards on May 1, 2014 according to a commercial that aired during The Voice last night.

The inaugural iHeartRadio Music Awards will stream live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on NBC at 8pm PST (May 1), featuring performances by Drake, Pharrell, Kendrick Lamar, Pitbull, Shakira, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Ariana Grande, Arcade Fire and Ed Sheeran.

For many Michael Jackson fans, however, the reason for tuning in will be the unveiling of a new song from the King of Pop’s upcoming ‘Xscape’ album.

If available information regarding the album’s lead single is anything to go by, the track being unveiled would seem to be 'Love Never Felt So Good' – which is schedule to begin worldwide radio rotation from May 5. The iHeartRadio Music Awards would provide the perfect platform to introduce the song to the American public, and in turn, the world.

iHeart Radio

It is unclear exactly how the iHeartRadio Music Awards will incorporate the Jackson premiere into their event’s schedule, but there are seemingly only two realistic options; a) streaming the track’s yet-to-be-announced music video during a break in the broadcast, or b) a live choreographed dance performance on the night.

In other news, five days ago, on April 17, Rich and Tone Talauega, otherwise known as ‘The Talauega Brothers’, tweeted that they were: “On a secret mission for the King of Pop in the Bay Area,” before advising that more details would be revealed soon.

The Talauega Brothers choreographed a number of Jackson’s short films and live performances throughout his career, and have most recently worked on posthumous Jackson projects including Cirque du Soleil’s ‘Immortal’ and ‘ONE’ productions, as well as the music video for 'Hollywood Tonight'.

The brothers have not followed up with any further tweets since April 17. It’ll be interesting to find out whether their secret mission for the King of Pop is connected to the iHeartRadio Music Awards, or another Jackson-related project.

Brian BanksWorking With MJ On ‘Thriller!’ 23-04-'14

DFLAT minor to E, E again, then G flat major, then C sharp minor 7. Written down, it means very little, but if you heard those notes played, you’d recognise them instantly.

It’s the chord sequence that has filled thousands of dancefloors, caused drivers in their millions to reach across and turn the car radio up and helped propel Michael Jackson from being just another pop star to a world icon.

They are the first five chords of the song ‘Thriller,’ taken from the record of the same name. Even now, 32 years after its release, it remains the biggest-selling album of all time.

Those chords are very familiar to Brian Banks, who lives in the countryside near Thornbury, Bristol in the UK.

A long time ago, and some 5,000 miles to the west, he was part of the whirlwind three weeks that saw the album put together at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angeles.

Brian, in 1982 an accomplished musician in his own right, was the synthesiser programmer for the album. Since then, he has worked on several major film scores and recorded for some of the world’s biggest companies, but working on ‘Thriller’ remains an eye-catching element of his CV.

Not that those in the studio at the time had any idea what they were about to unleash on the world.

“We were working with Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones (producer, pictured above), so yeah, it was a big deal. But I have to tell you, I don’t have any photographs of me in the studio because I was working on jobs of that stature on a pretty regular basis.

“He wasn’t ‘MJ’ in those days. It wasn’t like ‘Oh my God, it’s Michael Jackson’.” It was more, ‘Oh yeah, that guy from the Jackson Five is releasing another album’.

“It was cool to be working with Quincy and Michael. Don’t get me wrong, I was thrilled to be there – it was an A-plus gig and only the best of the best get asked by Quincy Jones to work on a Michael Jackson record.”
