A Day With Michael Jackson Book CoverA Day With Michael Jackson Book Is Available In Stores. 27-11-'15

Reginald Garcia had a special day in 1978 when he had the opportunity to meet, in person, Michael Jackson, the King of Pop. This book are Reggie’s reflections – through the written word and the lens of his camera – of meeting such a wonderful, caring, and considerate man.

His experience, best captured through the musings and the photos that follow, give insight into a day in the life of Michael Jackson. These pictures are a remembrance of one of the greatest performers the world has ever known. The author spent the entire day shooting pictures on-stage, in the dressing room, with and without the Jackson brothers. Michael was only 19 years old at the time.

Garcia was then a student at the California Tech and a freelance photographer. A friend of his sister, who works for CBS Records, who asked him to take pictures of the brothers in this session. It will therefore spend the day with the group, meet the future King of Pop, and make many photos.

The 3 pictures of Michael never published before, 1 B/W cover and 2 color. The black and white photos taken during the filming of the video pauses. "I asked him to sit facing a mirror and make as if reading a letter from a girlfriend, he had just received," says Garcia, speaking of Michael. This gives pictures of the star with her reflection in the mirror. An echo, as it were, under the singer, Man in the Mirror, the photographer has realized the parallel until years later.

The color photos show the Jackson 5 dressed in blue tuxedos, singing on stage.

Neverland RanchWill Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ever Sell? 26-11-'15

Asian buyer with US$100 million to spend now sought on Hong Kong’s Luxify after US auction flops.

Hong Kong luxury online marketplace Luxify has added a new big ticket item as it attempts to sell Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch to Chinese buyers for a cool US$100 million.

Located in Santa Barbara County in California, the property is now managed by the late singer’s estate and has been renamed Sycamore Valley Ranch. It was formerly taken over by Tom Barrack’s private-equity firm Colony Capital in 2008. The firm still maintains a small stake.

Jackson officially lived there from 1988 until shortly before his death in June 2009, but reports show he spent less and less time there after a police raid in 2003 linked to child molestation charges.

Start-up Luxify, dubbed an eBay for the super rich, is now marketing the King of Pop’s 12,598-square-foot (1,170-square-metre) former residence and its 1,091-hectare estate for HK$775 million (US$99.99 million) to Chinese, Hong Kong and Asian buyers.

“Chinese wealthy individuals are looking to invest abroad for financial and immigration reasons and the Michael Jackson aspect has quite a big resonance in China,” said Alexis Zirah, co-founder of Luxify.

Luxify has partnered with Los Angeles brokerage Hilton and Hyland to market the iconic home after it failed to attract buyers in the United States.

Luxify’s listing comes after the six-bedroom main property that includes three guest houses failed to secure a buyer through Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba’s Taobao marketplace in October.

The Taobao auction was open for one day but failed to land even a single bid at the 500 million yuan (US$78.2 million) opening price, with just one person registering for the sale.

Zirah said the company will use its offline network to market the property in China, adding that the price tag for such a large property should appeal to Chinese buyers.

Jackson bought the ranch, located in Los Olivos, in 1987 for a reported US$19.5 million but in 2008 defaulted on a US$24.5 million loan.

The French Normandy-style property failed to attract US buyers during its eight-month run on the market, despite celebrities from Lady Gaga to Beyoncé and Jay-Z reportedly showing interest.

A video scored to Jackson’s Man in the Mirror highlights the full estate including its pool, tennis courts and 1.6-hectare lake complete with waterfall and stone bridge.

Inside the main house, potential buyers can inspect Jackson’s private dance studio, where he would go through his famous moon walk routine. It also includes a home cinema.

It is unclear if the Lama shown in the marketing video was added for decoration as it roams the estate grounds, or if it included in the sale price.

Zirah said the ranch was the most expensive item listed on its platform, which has been connecting sellers of luxury products with a predominantly Asian audience since its launch last year.

Handbags, watches and wines are its most popular sale items.

Last year, a Mclaren MP4 supercar was sold through Luxify for HK$4.8 million.

'What A Life!' – Exhibition In Australia. 24-11-'15

One such professional photographer who had that chance to photograph Michael over and over again, was Tony Mott, Australia’s premier rock photographer for over thirty years.

Tony got his first break photographing Chrissy Amphiett of Sydney band Divinyls in the early 1980’s which led on to his ongoing success as a rock photographer. After 30 years, Tony has never lost the excitement of capturing the moment, never stopped learning and as stated in another article lives by the rule; “Please yourself first!”’

He resides in Sydney now and travels the world photographing the biggest rock stars in concert. His portfolio features the biggest names in music and includes photos taken of Michael from the early concert days to the 'HIStory' world tours.

While walking around Sydney’s Darling Harbour a few days ago, I came across an advertisement that stopped me in my tracks. On a fence bordering a major construction site in one of Sydney’s most famous tourist attractions, was Michael in all his ‘HIStory’ glory as part of an exhibition at the State Library of New South Wales. The exhibition is called 'What A Life!' and presents the work of Tony Mott’s extraordinary photography that is recognised worldwide. I couldn’t resist taking a photo next to the advertisement and also couldn’t resist a walk to the library that wasn’t too far away to view the exhibition in person. I knew I was at the right place when I saw a large banner of Michael on the front of the building. There was Michael still stopping traffic in Sydney, Australia and ironically on a library building, a place which housed a world full of knowledge in books that Michael loved so much to read and absorb.

'What A Life!' Exhibition

'What A Life!' showcases the incredible career of Tony Mott. The photography of Tony Mott captures all aspects of rock ‘n’ roll life and also tracks the enormous changes in the Australian music industry and the broader urban narratives of the Australian music scene over the last thirty years.

The exhibition tracks enormous changes in the music industry in Australia. The declining live scene, the drop in music magazine production, and the impact of digital technology on the art of rock photography covering both local and international artists. Tony Mott’s photography is nothing short of brilliant and though I did go through and view all his work on display, it was the photo of Michael during his 'HIStory' tour in Australia that I spent the most time at. Michael was displayed in his gold attire with the Australian flag above him in one of his iconic poses. As I looked at the photograph it brought back sweet memories of the time that I had seen him perform live in the same outfit in 1996 here in Australia.

The exhibition ‘What A Life! – Rock Photography by Tony Mott’ is a free exhibition on from the 17th of October 2015 to the 7th February 2016 at the State Library, Sydney, NSW.

I’ll leave you with the description on a plaque next to Michael’s photo that really does sum it up: “There’s no doubt the King of Pop was in a class of his own for both recording and performance. – Tony Mott”.

Dr. Patrick TreacyMJ’s Ex-Doc Clears Him Of Paedophilia. 22-11-'15

In the history of contemporary music and dance, very few artistes have been able to garner success as gargantuan and infamy as demeaning as American popstar Michael Jackson. Although ‘The King of Pop’ was riddled with accusations of child sexual abuse during his later years, his former doctor, acclaimed Irish surgeon Patrick Treacy, reveals that he never put much thought into those claims.

“I personally never found any evidence of Michael Jackson having paedophilic tendencies either in his conversation or behaviour,” Treacy, who is in India for promoting his memoir, 'Behind the Mask: The Extraordinary Story of the Irishman Who Became Michael Jackson’s Doctor', told IANS.

Treacy has also defended Jackson in his book where he writes about Jackson’s empathy towards children suffering from HIV in Rwanda and expressed his desire to do a concert from them. He also shed light on Jackson’s philanthropy when he donated $1.5 million to a children’s burns unit in Los Angeles.

During his lifetime, Jackson — who died in 2009 due to acute propofol and benzodiazepine intoxication — repeatedly went under the knife, and in the process, bleached his skin for a whiter skin tone.

Treacy refuted popular opinion that the superstar did that purposefully and asserted that it was due to a medical condition called vitiligo.

“He had a medical condition called vitiligo. We were mostly treating Michael for that and other cosmetic enhancements. He may have had some level of body dysmorphia that contributed to his willingness to undergo cosmetic surgical techniques,” Treacy said.

Many of you have seen tweets and other social media posts today announcing that Google Play is giving away 'Thriller' in the U.S. This is a great promotion that Sony set up with the permission of the Estate.

The Estate appreciates Google Play wanting to pay homage to the biggest selling album of all time and it’s a great way for Google to celebrate the album and encourage interest in Michael’s music by new fans!

Triumph International, Inc.Company ‘Illegal’ To Register Michael Jackson Trademark. 19-11-'15

A Chinese enterprise broke the law when it registered American pop singer Michael Jackson trademark in China, a Beijing court has ruled.

Beijing Daily reported that, in early November, the Beijing Intellectual Property Court gave its verdict that a China’s fashion company acted illegally when it rush-registered the name of Michael Jackson as a Chinese trademark.

Triumph International, Inc., a wholly-owned merchandise licensing company owned by the estate of the late singer, filed the complaint against Fujian Funson Fashion Corp. Ltd. which registered “Michael Jackson” as their own apparel trademark. Triumph called it a “malicious action.”

However, the Chinese company argued that the “Michael Jackson” trademark was just a name and had nothing to do with the pop singer, and it had produced and sold several products including a cleansing foam using the singer’s images and likeness in their promotion.

The Trademark Review & Adjudication Board had decided that, according to China’s trademark law, though Jackson had enjoyed prior rights, the singer was dead so that the subject to be protected doesn’t exist anymore. The board, therefore, maintained the usage right of the trademark by the Chinese company.

Triumph International then filed the suit with the Beijing Intellectual Property Court, seeking reversal of the Board’s decision.

It was argued in court that Jackson, being dead, no longer enjoyed rights to his name and Triumph International didn’t have standing to sue on his behalf.

However, the court decided to accept the company’s evidence that, although the singer had passed away on June 25, 2009, his name and likeness still have outstanding economic value. Hence, the Chinese company was clearly seeking economic gain when it frequently used Jackson’s name and images on their trademark designs and products, though it had nothing to do with the singer. This action was likely to mislead the public into thinking the products were licensed by Jackson himself or affiliated with his company, creating a wrong assumption regarding the qualities and sources of products and services and harm the public interest.

The court, therefore, revoked the board’s decision and asked it to review and make a new decision according to Triumph International’s appeal.

Former basketball superstar Michael Jordan also encountered a similar trademark dispute with a Chinese sports firm earlier this year. The former Chicago Bulls star sued Qiaodan Sports in 2012, saying the sportswear firm in southern Fujian Province had built its business around his Chinese name and famous jersey number “23” without his permission.

Qiaodan Sports said the trademark was legally registered in China and protected by domestic law. It countersued Jordan for violating Qiaodan Sports’ reputation.

The Trademark Review & Adjudication Board decided in 2014 that “Jordan” was a normal name in English and “Qiaodan” differed from it, while the likeness used in Qiaodan trademark design was not particularly intended to point to or resemble Jordan himself.

A Beijing intermediate court ruled in favor of Qiaodan over the dispute in February, 2015, and this ruling was upheld by the Beijing Municipal High People’s Court in June. However, the basketball star vowed to take the matter to China’s Supreme Court, a spokesman for Jordan’s legal team said.

Michael Jackson Estate Dismissed From Hologram Case. 18-11-'15

A federal judge dismissed Michael Jackson’s estate and Dick Clark Productions from a patent lawsuit stemming from a Jackson hologram performance during the 2014 Billboard Music Awards.

Plaintiffs Hologram USA, Musion Das Hologram and Uwe Maass filed the joint stipulation to dismiss without prejudice MJJ Productions, Dick Clark Productions and the estate of Michael Jackson from an amended complaint that continues against Pulse Evolution, Pulse Entertainment, Musion3D, and three people.
U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro signed the order on Nov. 9.

Plaintiffs’ attorney Ryan Baker said the move enables the hologram companies to focus on the defendants who were most involved in the patent infringement.
The plaintiffs claim to own the technology used to create a 3-D Tupac Shakur hologram that appeared during the 2012 Coachella music festival, which they say was used to create the Michael Jackson hologram during the 2014 Billboard Music Awards.

They claim defendants William James Rock and Ian O’Connell “fraudulently concealed” ownership of the patent, which was assigned in the same series of patents owned by the plaintiffs.
They say the patent is a continuation of two others the defendants used to create the moving image, after which they “made false statements to numerous media outlets and potential customers that they own the technology used to generate the Michael Jackson hologram.”
And they claim the third individual defendant, John C. Textor, a former business associate and CEO of lead defendant Pulse Entertainment, used the patented technology to produce the Michael Jackson hologram.

MJ Hologram BIllboard Music Awards

A holographic image of Michael Jackson performs onstage during the 2014 Billboard Music Awards at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 18, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Michael Jackson hologram sang 'Slave To The Rhythm' and performed with several stage dancers to a full audience at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The performance was broadcast nationally on ABC.

In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs describe the patented technology as “an amazing new technique of projecting video to create the illusion of life-size, full color, 3D moving images. All of the images used in this system are three-dimensional, but are projected as two dimensional images into a three-dimensional stage set.
Without the technology, they claim, the Michael Jackson hologram could not have been created.

Home Alone’s Devin Ratray Talks About When He Met Michael Jackson. 16-11-'15

Devin RatrayWith the film celebrating its 25th anniversary this month (which includes a special, limited theater run), we caught up with Devin to talk about his memories working on the Home Alone series, that time he met Michael Jackson on the set of Home Alone 2, and how often people recognize him on the street—and he even manages to give us some information on Steven Soderbergh’s ultra-secretive HBO project Mosaic that he’s a part of.

What’s your favorite story from the Home Alone era?
Michael Jackson came to visit the set of Home Alone 2. That was a pretty memorable day.

Please go on.
It was a Saturday rehearsal, we were just rehearsing a small scene. It was us running out of the house getting into our vans. When I got out of the transport van, Macaulay came up to me and said, “Come here, I want you to meet somebody.” He wouldn’t tell me who, but he was very excited. I followed him into the back of one of the prop airport vans that was there, and in the backseat of the van was Michael Jackson—long gray overcoat and gray fedora and sunglasses. This is seven o’clock in the morning on a Saturday, in February, in the middle of Illinois. I didn’t know what to do or say. But suddenly I’m shaking Michael Jackson’s hand without the glove on. What do I say? I said “Hi, I’m Devin and I play Buzz.” He said, “I know, it’s a real pleasure to meet you!” And I just stood there and I said “Yes, Michael Jackson, it is a real pleasure to meet me.” That kind of made him smile. I was able to make him laugh and that brought his guard down a little.

The only thing I thought to say, I had brought my video camera with me—I was making my own sort of documentary behind the scenes and had this big VHS 1992 video camera and I just said out loud, “Hey, do you think I could interview you later on camera?” He said as long as Macaulay was there. So later, while we were waiting to do another rehearsal running out of the house, Michael comes into the house to use the bathroom. Macaulay said it would be a good time to ask him some questions, so I asked him some questions on camera. I’ve had that tape for like twenty years.

Wow.
Yeah I never showed it to anybody.

I was going to say, have there been plans to try and turn that into something for the public or are you just trying to keep it for yourself?
I was keeping it mostly for myself. It wasn’t until Michael passed away that Entertainment Tonight contacted me. They’d heard rumors of me having this tape. I thought now would be a good time to pay tribute to the man. I didn’t want to profit from it, you know? I didn’t accept money or anything. I just thought it would be a good time for a tribute because nobody had ever seen it before—it was just sort of my little piece of history and my connection with Michael.

Captain EOEpcot To Close Michael Jackson-Based Attraction ... Again? 13-11-'15

The end may be near for the iconic Michael Jackson-based attraction, 'Captain EO', at Epcot.

Social media got wind of the closure via a sign — that may have been put out in guest areas prematurely — stating the last "farewell mission" for the ride would be on Dec. 6. Reports are the sign is no longer in the guest area, but you can see a picture of the sign from Twitter below.

Disney has yet to share any details on the sign, but it's an interesting turn for the attraction that has endured a series of openings and closures in recent years. It originally operated at Epcot from 1986 through 1994 when it was closed for Honey, I Shrunk the Audience, and was re-opened as a tribute to Jackson after his death in 2009.

The rumored closure could also pave the way for the next theater-based attraction that could tap into one of Disney's newer properties. For example, Disney expert Jim Hill with Jim Hill Media has previously said the success of Pixar's Inside Out could have the potential to replace 'Captain EO'.

New attractions in Orlando tend to create new interest for visitation that helps boost the region's travel and tourism support industry. A major player in that mix is Walt Disney World, which welcomes millions of visitors each year.

Hollywood Flashback: In 2002, Michael Jackson Announced Plans To Launch His Own Movie Studio.
08-11-'15

Michael Jackson may be best remembered for revolutionizing the music scene, but in 2002, the King of Pop had other ambitions. Just months after the release of his 10th and final album, 'Invincible', Jackson made plans to enter the film business with the launch of his own independent film company, Neverland Pictures.

The mini-studio was the result of a proposed $20 million partnership between Jackson’s Neverland Entertainment and production company MDP Worldwide. The news was made public at a private dinner reception at MDP chief Mark Damon’s home, where nearly 300 guests — consisting mostly of distributors who had shopped projects at AFM earlier that day — eagerly awaited Jackson's arrival.

The pop icon made a rare appearance at the event, arriving arm-in-arm with longtime friend Elizabeth Taylor. "He called me beforehand and asked if he could bring his friend — his best friend," Damon tells The Hollywood Reporter. "When the distributors saw Michael and Liz Taylor next to him, they all fainted. To this day, [some] still tell me that it was the greatest experience of their lives."

At the dinner, Jackson spoke enthusiastically about his vision for Neverland Pictures: He and producing partner Raju Patel would produce family films and reboots of classic fairy tales, some of which Jackson also would direct and star in.

Launch of Neverland Pictures (25-02-2002)

Michael Jackson poses with investors at his Neverland Ranch on February 25th, 2002.

"I dream great dreams," Jackson said. "Everything I've achieved started with a dream, and of all the dreams, this is the one I am most passionate about."

But nothing came of Jackson’s movie-mogul plans, as the deal never closed. "Michael had too many distractions with his life at the time," Damon recalls. "At times he was totally focused, and other times it was just a vacant stare."

He had a cameo in the 2004 fantasy comedy 'Miss Castaway' and the Island Girls (he played "a Vatican agent projected by an R2-D2-like droid") and later starred in the 2009 concert doc Michael Jackson’s 'This Is It', which was released after his death and grossed $261 million worldwide.
