Martin Bandier To Remain Boss Of Sony/ATV As He Signs New Deal. 13-01-'16

One of the music business’s biggest characters will be sticking around for a while yet.

Martin Bandier has just signed a contract extension to remain as Chairman and CEO of Sony/ATV Music Publishing.

74-year-old Bandier joined Sony/ATV as Chairman and CEO in 2007, following a 17-year spell running EMI Music Publishing, which he took over in 1989 after his company SBK was acquired by EMI.

The new deal – which Page Six rumoured last year was worth up to $7m per annum – arrives as speculation swirls around what the future will hold for Sony/ATV’s ownership.

The company – the biggest music publisher in the world, in control of over 3m copyrights – is a joint venture between Sony Corporation of America and the Estate of Michael Jackson.

Sony Music Entertainment last year triggered a buy/sell clause for Sony/ATV with its fellow co-owner.

One or the other of the parties could emerge as the sole owner of the company, which is believed to be worth $2bn, in 2016.

Bandier said: “I am thrilled to continue my role at Sony/ATV Music Publishing and continuing to work with a talented group of colleagues.

“Since my arrival, we have become the No. 1 music publisher and I am proud to say we represent many of the world’s best-loved songs alongside some of its greatest songwriters.

“I would like to thank Sony and John Branca and John McClain, the co-executors of the Estate of Michael Jackson, for their support and confidence in me, and I am looking forward to sharing many more successes with them over the next few years.”

Michael Lynton, CEO of Sony Entertainment Inc. said: “Marty Bandier is a legend in the music industry, and we are thrilled that he will continue his work at Sony/ATV.

“Since he first joined in 2007, the company has reached amazing heights, and we expect that it will continue to flourish under his guidance.”

Martin Bandier
Bandier studied practiced with Battle, Fowler, Jaffin and Kheel, and then became General Counsel to the LeFrak Organization. In 1991, he became chairman and CEO of EMI Music Publishing Worldwide. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2007 he became chairman and CEO of Sony/ATV Music Publishing.

John Branca and John McClain, co-executors of the Estate of Michael Jackson, said: “Renewing Marty’s relationship with Sony/ATV avails the Estate of his enormous creative and executive talents as we strategically and profitably meet the challenges of our evolving business.”

Sony/ATV’s catalogue includes songs by contemporary superstars such as Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and Pharrell Williams as well as works by all-time legends including The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Carole King, Queen, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder.

In 2011 and 2012, Bandier played a key role in the $2.2bn acquisition of EMI Music Publishing by Sony Corporation of America, the Estate of Michael Jackson and an investment group headed by Mubadala Development Company, for whom Sony/ATV administers the EMI catalog.

While at Sony/ATV Bandier has also negotiated the acquisitions of both the Famous Music catalog – which includes scores for film such as The Godfather, Braveheart and Mission Impossible – and the Leiber & Stoller catalog whose hits include “Stand By Me”, “Hound Dog” and “Jailhouse Rock”.

Throughout his tenure the company and its songwriters have won numerous awards, including this last year when Sony/ATV was named Pop Publisher of the Year by both ASCAP and BMI in the U.S.

In February 2015 Bandier became the first ever music publisher to receive the Grammy Awards’ President’s Merit Award for his work in the music industry during a Grammy weekend when many of the company’s songwriters, including Sam Smith and Pharrell Williams, were also honored.

He has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, while among his many industry roles he serves on the boards of the City of Hope, ASCAP, the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA).

Off The Wall CD/DVD And CD/Blu-ray (Deluxe Softpak) CoverPre-Orders For ‘Off The Wall’ Have Started! 08-01-'16

Sony Legacy just announced pre-orders for the re-release of 'Off The Wall’ are now open on Amazon! On February 26, during Black History Month, the Estate of Michael Jackson and Sony Legacy Recordings will release exclusive CD/DVD and CD/Blu-ray editions of Michael Jackson’s revolutionary 1979 recording, 'Off The Wall.'

This exclusive edition of Michael Jackson’s revolutionary 1979 recording 'Off The Wall' includes the original album bundled with the new documentary 'Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off The Wall', directed by Spike Lee. The deluxe softpak includes a 16-page booklet containing a new essay and photography plus a piece of chalk and inside panels with a chalkboard finish.

The importance of Michael Jackson’s 'Off The Wall' cannot be overstated. Recorded when he was just 20-years-old, the album heralded Michael’s emancipation as a singular musical force and creative visionary. It’s the record that “invented modern pop as we know it” according to Rolling Stone magazine. It smashed the ceiling on record sales for black artists, ushering in an exciting new era of R&B-to-pop crossover airplay, chart, marketing and sales trends not seen before in modern pop music. Written by Michael Jackson, the first single from 'Off The Wall', 'Don’t Stop 'Til You Get Enough', was Michael’s first Grammy and first single to hit No. 1 in the U.S. and internationally as a solo artist. With the singles 'Rock With You', 'Off The Wall' and 'She’s Out Of My Life', Jackson became the first solo artist in history to have four singles from the same album peak inside the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.

For 'Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off The Wall', director Spike Lee assembles a wealth of archival footage, including material from Michael’s personal archive, interviews with contemporary talents and family members, and Michael’s own words and image to create this insightful chronicle from the star’s early rise to fame through the release of this seminal album. A look at a chapter of his career that is rarely examined, 'Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off The Wall' allows audiences to travel with Michael as he gets his start at Motown, strikes a new path with CBS Records, and forges a relationship with legendary producer Quincy Jones. An illuminated portrait emerges of how an earnest, passionate, hard-working boy would become the “King of Pop.”

Robert BalserJackson 5 – Beatle Animation Director Robert Balser Dies At 88. 07-01-'16

Robert Balser, who served as the animation director for The Beatles’ film Yellow Submarine and on the Saturday morning Jackson 5 cartoons of the early 1970's, has died. He was 88.

Balser died Monday (January 4) of complications from respiratory failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, his wife, Cima, told leading animation website AWN.com.

Balser also partnered with graphic design legend Saul Bass on the seven-minute, end-of-film animated title sequence for Michael Anderson’s star-filled Around the World in 80 Days (1956), and he helmed the otherworldly “Den” sequence for Heavy Metal (1981).

Balser and Jack Stokes served as animation directors on the surreal Yellow Submarine (1968). The vividly colored film, set in the paradise of Pepperland, is full of morphing shapes and bizarre creatures like the Blue Meanies.

More than 200 artists were employed on the hand-drawn Beatles feature during a frenzied production that took 11 months to complete on a budget of less than $1 million.

“We didn’t say we’re going to do this because of this or that — it just happened,” Balser, one of the few Americans to work on the film, said in a 2012 interview. “I see how it works with little kids, with teenagers, how it’s engraved in the memory of older people. I think it resonates today, but I don’t know why.”

Balser launched Pegbar Productions in Barcelona, Spain, and later worked on the Jackson 5 cartoons, which aired on ABC from 1971-72; The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe, a 1979 Emmy-winning telefilm; and episodes of The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show in the 1980's.

J5 Cartoons
The 23 episodes cartoon series aired from September 1971 to February 1973. Follow Marlon, Jermaine, Tito, Jackie and Michael along  with his pets – mice Ray & Charles and snake Rosie – through their misadventures in cartoon land. It was a television show produced by Rankin Bass, a portrayal of careers of the popular Motown Recording Group, the Jackson Five. The television series set mainly on London at the studios of Halas and Batchelor and director was Robert Balser.

Michael Jackson's 'Off The Wall' Set For February Re-Release. 07-01-'16

Jackson's estate and publisher Sony Music are re releasing the 36-year-old album with a DVD of the film 'Michael Jackson's Journey from Motown to Off The Wall' on Feb. 26.

The documentary will premiere Jan. 24 at the Sundance Film Festival and will be broadcast Feb. 5 on Showtime.

'Off The Wall' featured the hits 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough' and 'Rock with You'.

Lee previously directed a documentary about Jackson's 'Bad' album for its 25th anniversary in 2012.

Katherine, Joe, Marlon and Jackie Jackson are among the family members who were interviewed for the new film.

Jackson's estate has released several albums, reissues and soundtracks since his death in 2009 at age 50. His music has remained popular in recent years.

The Recording Industry Association of America and Jackson's estate announced last month that Jackson's 'Thriller' sold 30 million copies in the United States, making him the first artist to attain 30-time multiplatinum status.

MJ OneWhy Michael Jackson ONE Is A Must-See In Las Vegas. 05-01-'16

It’s an understatement to say the superstar dominated not just black culture, but pop culture for much of the 80's and 90's. And because of this impact, Michael Jackson will forever live in on for future generations. His legacy will live on most especially in the spirit of those talented performers, musicians, and artists who continue to reinvent, reinvigorate, and re-imagine Michael’s legendary music. MJ lovers can get a taste at one of the amazing performances offered in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay with Michael Jackson ONE by Cirque du Soleil.

The show, in a word, is riveting. Fans ages five to 50-plus are treated to a visual feast of intricate costumes, transformative stage production, and, of course, decades worth of iconic dance sequences helmed by the “King of Pop” himself. Featuring an electrifying fusion of acrobatics, dance, and visuals that reflects the dynamic discipline and talent of MJ, ONE immerses the audience into the world of not just Michael’s music, but his life that was exposed through his lyrics.

And if you are familiar with Michael at all, you know this was loosely structured around fantasy, imagination, and the spirit of youthfulness. The show’s narrative is built around four main characters on a journey to Neverland, which is also the name of MJ’s previous home. Along the way, they find Jackson’s iconic penny loafers and socks, his sparkly glove, his fedora, and his sunglasses, while also growing up and finding peace. This story line leads into the performances that we can expect throughout the show.

Driven by his biggest hits heard like never before in a riveting, state-of-the-art surround-sound environment, ONE takes the audience through a seamless visual and musical montage, at the heart of a world that is in turn majestic, playful, magical, and heartwarming. In Michael Jackson ONE, Michael’s spirit is channeled through the vibrant energy of the cast of 63 dancers and performers, underscored by aerial performance, driving acrobatics, and vivid choreographies that use the urban/hip-hop idiom as a springboard for exploration. ONE is a heartfelt tribute to the work, innovative spirit, and legacy of Michael Jackson — the King of Pop, the genius, the visionary, the ONE.

“Michael Jackson ONE” is often confused with “Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour,” a separate, arena-based Cirque show also based on the life and works of Jackson and that played in arenas around the world. Despite any similarities in name, they couldn’t be any different. For instance, “ONE” is also unlike any other sonic experience you’ve ever encountered. There are 5,800 speakers installed in the theater, including at least three in every seat, creating an experience that certainly can’t be re-created in arenas, except for that of its home at the Mandalay Bay.

Though there are hundreds of shows and performances in Las Vegas, you will not be disappointed in this one-of-a-kind experience, which will connect you with arguably the greatest performer of all time. Michael Jackson ONE is stellar, and you don’t want to miss it!

Raymone K. Bain
Raymone K. Bain, former spokesperson for the late Michael Jackson.

Lawyer: Michael Jackson's Manager Is Lying. 04-01-'16

A former attorney for Michael Jackson testified Monday that his onetime manager is lying when she says she owns part of a company formed in 2006 to promote the late singer’s business interests.

Gregory Cross told Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Maria Stratton that Raymone Bain knew the singer was the sole owner of the Michael Jackson Co.

Cross said he flew cross-country from his East Coast home and worked countless hours with Bain to transfer the company from its status as a corporation to a limited-liability company in 2007, an action he says Bain likely wanted done for tax purposes.

Asked by Suann MacIsaac, an attorney representing the Jackson estate, if Bain was “fabricating” her current claim to own part of the company, Cross replied, “Yes.”

Jackson died on June 25, 2009, at age 50 of a drug overdose while in Los Angeles preparing for a series of comeback concerts in London.

Bain, Broderick Morris, Qadree El-Amin and Adean King say they collectively possess about 15 percent of the company under a 3 a.m. deal to which Jackson agreed in a Tokyo hotel room on June 1, 2006.

King was the only one of the four not present when the alleged accord was reached. Bain maintains her share is 10 percent.

Stratton is hearing a non-jury trial resulting from a petition filed by the Jackson estate seeking to have the estate declared the sole owners of the entity, which still exists today.

King previously worked for Bain, an attorney who served for a time as Jackson’s manager and spokeswoman; El-Amin is a talent manager whose former clients include Boyz II Men; and Morris promoted entertainment events in Japan.
According to Cross, he served at the time as Jackson’s outside general counsel. He testified that neither Bain nor King ever mentioned that they or anyone else other than the singer wanted a piece of the Michael Jackson Co.

“That absolutely was not the understanding,” Cross said.

Bain also never said she wanted to be a member of the board of directors of the company, Cross said. Morris testified last week that he believes he, the other three claimants and Jackson’s mother, Katherine, are currently the members of the company’s board of directors.

But Cross’ testimony was challenged by both attorney Maxwell Blecher, on behalf of Bain and the other claimants, and the judge.

Cross, questioned by Blecher, said he never saw a document that Jackson allegedly signed that outlined the ownership shares the claimants say they have.

“Yet you sit here and say she (Bain) lied?,” Blecher asked.

“Yes,” Cross replied.

The judge asked Cross why he did not inquire of Bain at the time if she was claiming an ownership stake. Cross answered that Jackson never said anything to imply the singer was not the sole owner.

“Do you believe everything a client tells you?,” Stratton asked.

In other testimony, Washington, D.C.-based attorney Frederick Cooke said he worked with Bain in the initial stages of forming the Michael Jackson Co. in 2006. Cooke said Bain was clear in saying that she, Jackson, and “maybe some others” would have ownership shares in the company.

“She was going to be president and CEO,” Cooke said.
