Who Owns Michael Jackson Entertainment Firm? Court Battle Rages. 29-06-'16

Court BattleA lawyer for Michael Jackson’s estate urged a judge Wednesday (June 28) to reject claims by four people who insist they had interests in a company the singer created before his death, insisting the superstar was the entity’s sole owner.

Lawyers for Qadree El-Amin, Broderick Morris, Raymone Bain and Adean King said their clients collectively own about 15 percent of the Michael Jackson Co. under a 3 a.m. deal Jackson made with them in a Tokyo hotel room on June 1, 2006.

They say it was Jackson’s idea to form the company and that he reserved 75 ownership for himself; 10 percent each to his mother, Katherine, and Bain, his general manager; and 1.68 percent each to El-Amin, Morris and King.

In his final argument to Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Maria Stratton, lawyer Howard Weitzman questioned the validity of a document the quartet claims is Jackson’s signed consent to the alleged deal regarding the Michael Jackson Co.

Weitzman said Jackson routinely referred such documents to his lawyers before penning his name.

“I believe this is a totally and completely fabricated claim,” Weitzman said.

Stratton said she was taking the case under submission and did not indicate when she would rule.

King worked at the time for Bain, who testified in a sworn declaration that she met Jackson through tennis star Serena Williams. El-Amin was the manager of the R&B vocal group Boyz II Men, and Morris was the chief operating officer of Positive Productions Inc., a Japan-based company that promoted concerts and other events in that country.

The four maintain they tried to help Jackson recharge his career through public appearances, performing on tour and making more music.

Testimony began late in 2015 and continued through the first part of this year. The non-jury trial stems from a petition filed by the Jackson estate, which seeks to have the estate declared the sole owner of the Michael Jackson Co. LLC.

Attorney Jeffrey Fazio, on behalf of Morris, Bain and King, said Jackson was financially and professionally devastated by sexual misconduct allegations despite his 2006 acquittal and was looking to revitalize his career.

“Nobody wanted anything to do with him,” Fazio said. “He was a pariah at the time. It was no mean feat trying to get people to go into business with him.”

Yet Morris convinced business representatives to talk with Jackson and he spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of his own money doing so, Fazio said.

Fazio said Bain was instrumental in getting refinancing for Jackson’s Neverland Ranch near Santa Barbara as well as his family’s Encino compound.

Lawyer Maxwell Blecher, representing all El-Amin, Morris, Bain and King, said the four pledged to keep the deal under wraps.

“They all said they had an understanding with Jackson that they would not blab about it,” Blecher said. “They didn’t need to take out an ad in the Wall Street Journal.”

But attorney Patrick Millett, also on behalf of the Jackson estate, said the estate was entitled to know about the claims of the four within a year of Jackson’s June 25, 2009, drug overdose death. Their failure to do so violated the statute of limitations, she said.

Blecher previously said he does not know how much his clients may be entitled to if they win the case because the estate’s lawyers have not given them documents demonstrating the value of the estate. However, he said that despite the lack of information, it is worthwhile for the four to push forward.

“I believe there is substantial money there,” Blecher said.

Corruption Watch: Corrupt Public Officials Spur Ethics Reform - Some of New York's top politicians - both past and present - have been making headlines for all the wrong reasons as of late. Tonight we'll begin a new series called Corruption Watch, which takes you inside the most prominent public corruption cases from our area. Former federal prosecutor Jennifer Rodgers is the executive director of the Center for the Advancement of Public Integrity, and she joins us with her take on the ongoing investigations of Mayor Bill de Blasio and his administration. Rodgers will also tell us what a U.S. Supreme Court decision could mean for former state lawmakers Sheldon Silver and Dean Skelos, who were convicted of corruption in separate cases and sentenced to federal prison last month.

"Policing the Police:" A FRONTLINE Special - A FRONTLINE documentary, airing tonight at 10 p.m. on PBS, takes a look at one police department that has been asked to change their process of policing. New Yorker writer, Jelani Cobb, had the chance to spend time with the force on the FRONTLINE and he joins us to discuss his provocative documentary which explores whether the police department in Newark is changing its ways amid violent crime that continues to plague their city.

Michael Jackson’s Book Editor Skeptical About Audio Tapes, Says He Had “Utmost Respect For Prince”.
28-06-'16

Shaye Areheart
Shaye Areheart, book editor of 'Moonwalk'.

It’s not like we take the UK Mirror seriously. But they’ve been flacking so called quotes from so-called audio tapes they say Michael Jackson made when he was writing his book 'Moonwalk' in 1988. On the tapes, the Mirror– not exactly a Pulitzer finalist– says Michael dissed Prince many different times.

This didn’t sound plausible to me, and the Mirror has not actually offered up the tapes or transcripts. So I called up the editor of 'Moonwalk', Shaye Areheart, now head of the Columbia University Publishing Program. Shaye worked for Jackie Onassis at Doubleday as senior editor. She sat with Michael and recorded him, and put 'Moonwalk' together.

Shaye had not heard about this latest contretemps. She is skeptical that anyone has any tapes. She told me, “All of the tapes are under the control of Michael’s estate.” That is, if there are tapes. And transcripts are a total question mark. But when she was done editing the book, all the tapes went back to Michael’s office.

As for Prince, Shaye told me: “I always found that Michael had the utmost respect for Prince. And he named his son Prince? Has no one thought of that?”

Indeed. The Michael Jackson-Prince feud sounds concocted at best. I’m also mystified why stories of Michael’s so called “porn” collection have surfaced as repurposed garbage. All of the books, magazines and pictures at Neverland were indexed and put into evidence at Michael’s 2005 trial. All of it was thrown out or disproved to be anything. The jury found him innocent of owning child porn or any porn. The whole thing now feels contrived and orchestrated. To what purpose, I can’t imagine.

The Estate Reflects On Michael Jackson. 25-06-'16

As we take time today to reflect with sadness on the loss of Michael Jackson seven years ago, we can’t help but also acknowledge the enduring impact of his legacy and spirit that continues to inspire people in all corners of the world.

In the past year alone, 'Thriller' became the first album in history to be certified triple Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America for sales in excess of 30 million in the US alone. Michael’s timeless masterpiece 'Off The Wall' was celebrated through a new documentary which received widespread accolades while sparking a renewed appreciation for his genius from both critics and the public worldwide.

But Michael Jackson was far more than a multitalented entertainer. In an uncertain world too often plagued by violence and intolerance, Michael’s messages of universal love, compassion, hope and unity are even more relevant today.

In his name — for his children, and for everyone inspired by his compassion to “make a better place” for the present and the future — we ask you to keep Michael in your heart.

Michael Jackson's 7th AnniversaryMichael Jackson's 7th Anniversary. 25-06-'16

Hi Michael Jackson fans,

Today, June 25th 2016, marks the seventh year anniversary of the death of Michael Jackson. When the shocking news of Jackson’s death was announced seven years ago, the world seemingly came to a halt. As millions of fans mourned Jackson’s death, news coverage around the globe exposed lurid details that Jackson died of long-term use of prescription drugs.

June 25th, 2009, Michael died in Los Angeles after being rushed to UCLA Medical Center, Michael Jackson died at age 50. Initial reports were that Jackson suffered from cardiac arrest.

There are events and tribute's of the late Michael Jackson on the 7th Anniversary of his passing.

It’s sad and despicable that the media are pulling this stunt about MJ especially at this sensitive time. Focus only on the great man we love and reflect on how he changed our world in a positive way. The impact he had, (and still has) on us all.

Unfortunately, negative reports and vile gossip will always be doing the rounds. Ignore parasites that want to make a career of blackening of Michael. The purest people are always shot down.

Michael was a good person and loved children, remember Michael's words "before I would hurt a child, I would slit my wrists". It's a complete lie,it's not the truth I'm here to say. You know, don't judge a person, do not pass judgement, unless you have talked to them one on one. I don't care what the story is, do not judge them because it is a lie.

We miss you Michael.

Love you forever "Gone Too Soon".

Webmaster Dirk.

Director Simon Maxwell On Working With Michael Jackson. 24-06-'16

David Farrier tracks down the man behind some of the most iconic music videos for Nine Inch Nails and DC Talk, and finds him... in Tauranga.

What was the first video directing job for a music video where you were like, “Oh my god, this is actually quite a big deal”?

I had a long stint with Michael Jackson as a director of post-production. He did a world tour in ‘88, ‘89. It was meant to be a one-off thing, and then it turned into, like, eight months while he was on the European tour.

So were you dealing with live visuals, or documenting the tour?

Everything. It started off as just like, “We’ll bring in some tapes, and you can cut it together,” and then, “Oh, by the way, we have another hundred tapes coming in, so how about getting a team of editors together, and you can be director of post-production,” and, “Oh, and by the way, can you come out and shoot some stuff while you’re at it!”

But that’s how it works, if you’re part of that whole creative community. It’s a bit like that in Tauranga or Auckland: if you’re in that creative community and build up relationships with people, eventually something will come.

The whole industry is based on personal relationships. The way in is by hanging around and picking up the bits and pieces and working the graveyard shifts, and eventually you get a break. Someone will be sick, or can’t do something, and they’ll go, “Oh there’s that guy that’s been hanging around, and he seems quite good and seems to know what he’s talking about, maybe give him a shot.”

Michael with Simon Maxwell backstage Wembley Stadium in London
Michael Jackson with Simon Maxwell (left) and Josh Galvin backstage Wembley Stadium in London.

How was the Michael Jackson experience, because that time was like the ultimate excess of everything – budgets, money. What was it like being in the middle of that?

Well, it was an education. I think stamina was the thing that came out of it most, because he never slept. So, you know, he’d start at 9 or 10 in the morning and work through to 3 or 4 the following morning, six days a week. Seven days a week!

And the thing about those sort of guys – and it carries through into working with Trent and various other people – they’re so focused. That’s what makes them stand out from the rest of the crowd, and that becomes quite an addictive thing when you’re involved in that. And they are receptive to ideas, which is good, but they are absolutely driven and they know what they want. And they won’t rest until they get it, so there’s no point in going, “Oh, she’ll be right!” That doesn’t exist in their environment.

So he was incredibly driven. What was the atmosphere like? Was it relaxed, or would you all be yelling at each other?

He’s very quietly spoken. Very polite. But emphatic that “This is the way it’s going to be done.” And of course they all have their inner circle, so they all hang around. And they make sure that whoever they’re with, their wishes are realised. So the inner circle with those people – Trent had some, Michael had some, they all have them – it’s quite a political arena. You have to please everyone.

How Michael Jackson's Kids Paris, Prince And Blanket Are Coping 7 Years After Father's Death. 22-06-'16

It's been seven years since they lost their father but Prince, Paris and Blanket Jackson have each found their own ways to honor Michael Jackson's memory.

Paris TattooParis, 18, is keeping her dad's memory alive through body art. In April, she got a tattoo that read 'Queen of My Heart' in her father's handwriting, explaining, "To everyone else he was the King of Pop. To me, well, he was the king of my heart."

And in May, she added more Michael-themed ink, namely, the cover art from his 1989 album 'Dangerous'.

Although Paris received some flak on social media recently for not posting about Jackson on Father's Day, she was quick to defend herself on twitter saying, "having 8 tattoos dedicated to someone overrules a single post about them on a stupid social media acc because of a holiday. #justmyopinion."

Meanwhile, Prince, 19, appears to share his father's love of music and started an L.A. production company aptly named King's Son. He is currently working on the company's first music video.

Today, the kids are trying to put that tragic day behind them. Besides his production company, Prince is studying at Loyola Marymount University. Paris, who is not in school, enjoys spending time with her friends including her 26-year-old musician boyfriend Michael Snoddy. Blanket, 14, who was just 7 at the time of his father's death, attends elite Buckley School in L.A. and is very involved in martial arts, according to a Jackson family source. He and Paris live with their grandmother Katherine Jackson.

"The siblings all remain close," says a family source. "Prince is always coming home to visit his grandmother."

The Michael Jackson Estate Responds To The Ignorance Of The Press. 22-06-'16

The Estate Of Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson named attorney John Branca (family friend) and music executive John McClain as the executors of his estate.

The estate of Michael Jackson released the following statement on Tuesday evening (June 21):

Seven years ago this coming Saturday, the world lost an amazing artist and humanitarian devoted to helping children in need in all corners of the world. Michael Jackson’s fans, including the Executors of his estate, prefer to remember the wonderful gifts Michael left behind instead of having to once again see his good name dragged through the mud by tabloid trash.

Everything in these reports, including what the County of Santa Barbara calls “content that appears to be obtained off the Internet or through unknown sources” is false, no doubt timed to the anniversary of Michael’s passing. Those who continue to shamelessly exploit Michael via sleazy internet “click bait” ignore that he was acquitted by a jury in 2005 on every one of the 14 salacious charges brought against him in a failed witch hunt.

Michael remains just as innocent of these smears in death as he was in life even though he isn’t here to defend himself. Enough is enough.
