Bad Album CoverOn August 31, 1987, Michael Jackson Released 'Bad'. 31-08-'17

Thirty years ago, on August 31st, 1987, Michael Jackson released 'Bad', his follow-up to the pop music phenomenon, 'Thriller'.

Five years ago, as Epic prepared to celebrate the silver anniversary of Michael Jackson’s 1987 masterpiece, numerous writers from media outlets across the globe reexamined the album and re-reviewed it now in the shadow of Jackson’s 2009 death. One such critic wrote for The Atlantic and argued that 'Bad' was, not only not a “good” record but it was actually a “bad” one, mediocre and over-hyped.

Though 'Bad' is technically the singer’s seventh release, for many it is his third proper album, dating back to 'Off The Wall'. His four solo albums before 'Off The Wall' had been released while Jackson was still fully entrenched with the Jackson Five and was not permitted by his label (Motown) to feature any songs that he had written. 'Off The Wall' may be his fifth album, but a switch in label (from Motown to Epic) and a switch in producer (from Hal Davis to Quincy Jones) made for big enough changes that it may as well have been a career reset.

The album is more confident, as this was the peak of Jackson’s song-writing prowess. He wrote eight of the ten tracks featured on the record (having written four of the nine on 'Thriller'), and wrote as many as twenty additional songs that producer Quincy Jones didn’t use. Jackson originally wanted a massive double album for the 'Thriller' follow-up but was convinced by Jones to, as with 'Thriller', opt for quality over quantity.

'Bad' is also the first album where Michael express his feeling against the press with 'Leave Me Alone' and got on tour solo for the first time!

'Bad' made history as being the first album to have five of its singles peak at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 consecutively, as 'I Just Can’t Stop Loving You', 'Bad', 'The Way You Make Me Feel', 'Man In The Mirror' and 'Dirty Diana' all charted at number one on the music chart. The record has still not been surpassed.

John Landis On The Making Of Jackson's 'Thriller': 'I Was Adamant He Couldn’t Look Too Hideous'.

John Landis'Thriller' had already been out a year when the king of pop asked the director of 'An American Werewolf' in London to direct a video for its title track. The result helped turn an already huge record into the biggest ever.

It was around 2am and I was asleep, in London, the first time Michael Jackson called me. He told me how much he admired 'An American Werewolf' in London and asked if it would be possible for me to direct a music video in which he could “turn into a monster?” I explained to him that London was eight hours ahead of LA. I said I would call him when I got back to LA in a couple of weeks. Then I went back to sleep.

We spoke on the phone four or five times before I returned to California. Michael told me he wanted me to make a music video for the song 'Thriller', and that in the video he wanted to go through the same kind transformation from a two-legged man into a four-legged beast that was in 'An American Werewolf' in London.

Rick Baker – who won the first-ever Academy Award for best makeup for 'An American Werewolf' in London – and I showed Michael movie books filled with photographs of monsters. We soon discovered that he hadn’t seen many horror movies. He found most of the pictures “too scary”. We came to the conclusion that if Michael were going to dance, it would be a hell of a lot easier for his monster to have two legs instead of four. I was adamant that whatever he was going to turn into, he couldn’t be too hideous or unattractive. Scary – yes; creepy – yes; but NOT ugly. I ultimately suggested that Michael turn into a Wolfman like the one in 1957’s I Was a Teenage Werewolf. Hence the 1950's setting in 'Thriller’s' “movie within the movie”.’

Rick eventually came up with his elegant “WereCat” design for Michael’s monster. It was Michael’s suggestion that we include zombies.

I hoped that Michael would go along with my plan to make a proper two-reeler (a cinema-release short) and not just a “needle-drop” rock video. He loved the idea of making 'Thriller' a real motion picture event that could play in cinemas all over the world. So we created a budget that reflected our ambitious production, much bigger than anything spent on a music video before. The problem was Michael’s record company had no interest in another video from the 'Thriller' album. The album had been No 1 for more than a year and the company thought it had peaked. Michael put me on the phone to president of CBS Records, Walter Yetnikoff, and I had never heard such profanity at such volume. Michael asked, “What did Walter say?” I told him “Walter said ‘no’.”

Thriller Video Clip - On the setMichael Jackson and director John Landis on the set of the video clip 'Thriller'.

Mike volunteered to pay for the film himself, but we decided to make a 45-minute making-of film that – added to 'Thriller’s' 15-minute running time – meant we had an hour of film we could sell to television and so finance our production. This was an elegant concept – except no television network wanted it. To them, 'Thriller' was last year’s news. Even MTV, which had had great success with 'Billie Jean' and 'Beat It', the first two videos from 'Thriller', turned us down. (MTV never had to pay for videos because they were considered by record companies to be marketing costs.) But Showtime, then a new pay cable channel, agreed to pay half the budget, and MTV suddenly changed its mind, justifying the expenditure as a “motion picture”, not a video.

We were ready to make our movie. I asked my wife, Deborah Nadoolman, to design the costumes. She created that red leather jacket for Michael to wear. It became as iconic as the leather jacket she had earlier designed for Indiana Jones. Michael brought in choreographer Michael Peters, with whom he had worked on 'Beat It'; people are still dancing to the moves the two Michael's created for 'Thriller'. The making-of film – directed by Jerry Kramer – documented just what a brilliant performer Michael was, and we added what material we could: an 8mm home movie of young Michael dancing, which was found in a closet at his parent’s house, footage from the Ed Sullivan Show, and Michael’s legendary performance at the Motown 25th anniversary special. Watching 'The Making Of Thriller' now, after three decades, one thing is clear: Michael looks so happy.

The earth-shattering success of Michael Jackson’s 'Thriller' was a surprise to everyone but Michael. My memories of him are naturally shaded by his tragic end. But I recall the Michael I collaborated with in 1983, and that Michael was joyous, hard-working, relaxed and determined to do his best. And Michael’s best was truly fantastic.

• The restored version of 'Thriller' and 'The Making Of Thriller' has its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on 3 September.

Quincy Jones Looks Back On The Making Of Michael Jackson's 'Bad'. 30-08-'17

Quincy Jones"I thought it was time for him to do a very honest album," producer says of 1987 smash that spawned 'Man In The Mirror' and four other number ones.

Quincy Jones had already built an exceptional, prolific and wide-ranging career in multiple genres by the time he met Michael Jackson. He toured with Dizzy Gillespie, arranged Frank Sinatra's 'Fly Me To The Moon' and Ray Charles' Genius + Soul = Jazz, led his own groups, scored films and TV shows, and showcased his knack for pop-leaning production on records like Big Maybelle's 'Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On' and a string of four consecutive Top Five singles for Lesley Gore in 1963 and 1964.

Jones brought all this training to bear on his work with Jackson, and the pair become one of the most important duos in the history of pop. Between 1979 and 1987, Jackson released 'Off The Wall', 'Thriller' and 'Bad', a hat trick of Jones-produced albums that sold countless millions of copies and scored 17 Top 10 hits, including nine Number Ones, in the U.S. In honor of Thursday's 30th anniversary of 'Bad', Jones spoke with Rolling Stone about his work on the historic LP.

MTV VMA's: Pink Was Honored With The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. 28-08-'17

PinkPink was honored yesterday (August 27) with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award during MTV Video Music Awards with the most lovely, inspiring speech about her daughter, Willow — her six-year-old daughter with husband Carey Hart — but her words resonated with fans watching from home and with the whole audience at the Forum in Inglewood, California.

After performing some of her greatest hits and receiving a warm introduction from Ellen DeGeneres, the songstress took to the stage to give a heartfelt speech to Willow, recounting the time when her six-year-old daughter told her: "I'm the ugliest girl I know ... I look like a boy with long hair."

The day after MTV announced Pink would be this year's recipient, the singer addressed some criticism she received online, saying: "You don't have to like me at all, I'm ok with that. Just be a decent person." Pink added, "You're fucking Rip Van Winkle if you've never seen one of my videos."

Before, Pink MTV's Vanguard honorees were Rihanna in 2016, Kanye West in 2015 and Beyoncé in 2014.

Michael Jackson’s Grave Is Empty! Family Hiding Singer’s Remains At Secret Location. 24-08-'17

Michael Jackson‘s mother, Katherine, has broken her silence to reveal the King of Pop’s crypt at Forest Lawn cemetery is EMPTY! RadarOnline.com has learned exclusively the 'Thriller' sensation’s body was not in the coffin at his star-studded July 7, 2009, burial service held a dozen days after he was killed by a drug overdose!

Shockingly, Michael’s corpse was kept on ice for months — before the Jackson matriarch settled a family feud and had her beloved son’s remains cremated to thwart ghoulish efforts to rob his grave.

“Everyone thinks Michael is buried at Forest Lawn, but he’s not,” an insider tells Radar exclusively.

“The family has kept the secret for safety reasons and to fulfill Michael’s wishes. But Katherine has privately revealed the truth to trusted friends.”

The legendary Moonwalker died at age 50 after a lethal cocktail of prescription medications, including the anesthetic propofol. His personal doctor Conrad Murray served two years in the slammer on an involuntary manslaughter rap for causing the tragedy that shook the world.

Millions watched the emotional public memorial service for Michael at Los Angeles’ Staples Center, where the superstar’s body was temporarily kept in the flower-draped golden casket on stage.

Michael Jackson’s final resting place — a regal tomb adorned with flowers, framed photos, letters and other souvenirs.

After months of family in fighting, Katherine decided to burn Michael’s remains, according to the source.

"The family fought for months about what to do,” confides the source. “Katherine was paranoid, and scared someone would steal his body.”

On Sept. 3, 2009, the family held a private burial service at Forest Lawn in Glendale, Calif., and Michael’s empty casket was entombed in a structure known as the Great Mausoleum.

“Michael was used to putting on a show, so the family wanted the monument at Forest Lawn because so many Hollywood legends have been buried there,” confides the source.

The Gloved One’s true final resting place actually is beneath a beautiful pear tree, known as the Giving Tree, on his California ranch!

“Michael’s ashes were scattered at his beloved Neverland, which was very special to him,” reveals the source.

“The Giving Tree was his favorite spot on the property. He would spend hours there writing.

“The family wanted him to rest in peace in a familiar place.”

Michael sold the 2,700-acre property near Santa Barbara before his death for $22.5 million. It’s now back on the market for $67 million, but his three children — Prince, Paris and Blanket — still have access to the ranch.

More Michael Jackson Items On Auction. 17-08-'17

This time is items from films and short films!

3 items will be auctioned on September 26 part of a “Treasure from Film & Television” form Propstore, the auction house dedicated to movie and TV sets and costumes.

Werewolf MaskThriller mask:

The highlight of this auction for MJ fans is a magnificent (and scary) Werewolf mask used for 'Thriller'! Yes, this is Thriller… Thriller year!

Just be aware, this was not wore by Michael but only use to get the make-up right! Still, a great insight of the work done on the 35 years old music video (I know, short film) that changed the music industry!

A Michael Jackson ‘Cat-Face’ paint-test mask made for the classic John Landis-directed music video Michael Jackson’s 'Thriller'. This mask was made to test the paint scheme for the cat monster Michael (Michael Jackson) turned into during the fake film at the beginning of the music video.

Made of latex, the mask resembles a sharp-fanged beast with yellow cat eyes. The piece is coloured with acrylic paints that stops at the edges. Taped inside the mask is a handwritten note which is dated 2/24/1988 and outlines the steps to accomplish the paint scheme. The lot shows minor wear to the latex, with a small tear at the corner of the mouth. However, it remains in overall very fine condition. Dimensions: 25 cm x 22 cm x 14 cm (10" x 8 1/2" x 5 1/2")

Moonwalker MaskPrice: £2,000 – 3,000

Moonwalker mask:

The second item is from Moonwalker and again this is a mask:

A Michael Jackson robotic facial appliance from the production of his music anthology film 'Moonwalker'. This appliance was made for the scene when Jackson transformed into a robotic spaceship.

This latex mask was cast from a mould and is detailed with geometric, robot-like cheeks. The mask is painted silver to appear metallic. The appliance shows minor wear due to production use and age, but remains in very fine condition. Dimensions: 18 cm x 13 cm x 20 cm (7" x 5" x 8")

Price: £1,000 – 1,500

Captain EO PlanetCaptain EO planet:

The last “little” piece is from the miniature of the planet where 'Captain EO' land. A very small piece of that is on auction joined with few copy of documents and drawings:

A section of model miniature, concept artwork and behind-the-scenes photographs from Francis Ford Coppola’s sci-fi amusement experience 'Captain EO'. The miniature formed part of the expansive set used for the scene in which 'Captain EO' (Michael Jackson) and his crew descended to the planet’s surface.

Made of plastic with a board backing, the piece is finished in grey paint, with assorted electronics used for additional detailing. The model miniature is accompanied by six sheets of printed concept artwork, some with pencil annotations, along with seven photographs detailing the construction of the trench set and a length of 70mm film from the filming of the trench scene. Dimensions (miniature section): 6 cm x 37 cm x 44 cm (2 1/2" x 14 1/2" x 17 1/2")

Price: £500 – 700

Uri Geller
Geller hopes the 'amazing' art will attract tourists from all over the world.

“They are for my museum.’’

Bubbles, 34, has been turning out art from his new home at the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula, Florida.

Five paintings recently sold for £577 each to raise cash for the sanctuary.

Twelve others have gone on display in Miami, where gallery chief Yansi Meoqui has insisted they are “incredibly popular”.

He added that the works “show a very individual style”.

Geller, a former co-chairman of Exeter City FC, has announced his museum will also feature rocks taken from his own island – Lamb in Scotland’s Firth of Forth.

Riley Keough Opens Up On Michael Jackson As A Stepfather. 16-08-'17

She's the granddaughter of Elvis Presley and the step-daughter of Michael Jackson.

And Riley Keough admits her childhood was anything but ordinary while appearing on the Late, Late Show with James Corden on Monday (August 14).

'I didn't know Elvis, but I did know Michael,' the 28-year-old actress, who is the daughter of Lisa Marie Presley, explained.

'He'd get me lots of toys and things I wanted. One time he got me this really nice watch at Disneyland, it was a 'Beauty and the Beast' watch.'

Riley's mother Lisa Marie was married to the King of Pop from 1994 to 1996 when Riley was between the ages of five and seven.

When Corden asked the actress about Bubbles, Michael Jackson's famous chimpanzee, she confirmed that she had, indeed, met the famous chimp.

Riley Keough
Riley Keough reveals she brought one of stepdad Michael Jackson's chimps to school as a child and talks life on Neverland Ranch.

Everyone loves Bubbles! When Corden asked the actress about Bubbles, Michael Jackson's famous chimpanzee, she confirmed that she had, indeed, met the famous chimp.

'There were a few different chimps that I remember, I don't remember which one was which,' she admitted.

She said she remembers one of them pulling down curtains in the house and reveals one went to school with her, although she can't confirm if it was Bubbles or not.

So there were multiple chimps, but we only knew about Bubbles, the other chimps must have hated Bubbles,' Corden joked. 'People would be like, why is Bubbles getting all the love.'

Billy Eichner, who was the other guest on the couch, was fascinated by Riley's experiences: 'You were at Neverland and Graceland,' Billy exclaimed, throwing up his hands. 'I've never even been to San Diego.'

The actress, who comes from Hollywood royalty, was recently filming her latest role alongside Al Pacino in New York City.
