Michael Jackson’s Final Film, ‘This Is It,’ Screens In Oakland. 22-05-'17

The fact that the documentary 'Michael Jackson’s This Is It' came out a mere four months after the singer’s death in 2009 suggested that it was going to be a cheap piece designed to make a quick buck.

Instead, it is one of the great cinematic portraits of a musical artist.

After his death from an accidental prescription drug overdose, Jackson was portrayed as an addict barely able to function. But the movie, shot during rehearsals at Los Angeles’ Staples Center for his upcoming world tour, shows an alert, engaged artist involved in every aspect of the production, from choreography to set design to collaboration with performers and crew. The music’s good, too.

The director, Palo Alto-born Kenny Ortega, was on the 'This Is It' team, and he was the perfect man for the job: The dancer and choreographer has worked with Gene Kelly and Madonna. He understands iconic artists.

'This Is It': 10:30 p.m. Friday, May 26. $10. The New Parkway Theater, 474 24th St., Oakland. (510) 658-7900.

Michael Jackson Estate Issues Statement Not Sanctioning Lifetime And Netflix Projects. 22-05-'17

The Estate Of Michael JacksonThe estate also said it has "numerous projects in development.

Michael Jackson's estate today released a statement saying it did not sanction two upcoming Michael Jackson projects, one by Lifetime TV and another for which a script was recently purchased by Netflix. At the same time the estate indicated it has several unannounced Jackson projects in development.

Last week, Lifetime TV released a trailer for its film 'Michael Jackson: Searching For Neverland' based on 'Remember The Time: Protecting Michael Jackson In His Final Days', a 2014 book written by Jackson’s bodyguards Bill Whitfield and Javon Beard. Michael Jackson impersonator Navi stars as the late pop icon. The film is slated to be released later this month.

News also broke that Netflix was nearing a deal for a script on the life of Michael Jackson as told from the perspective of his pet monkey Bubbles. Isaac Adamson penned the non-traditional biopic, which was the top title on the 2015 Black List. Taika Waititi, who directed the upcoming 'Thor: Ragnarok', was slated to co-helm the stop-animation feature with Mark Gustafson. Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that the deal neared $20 million and included worldwide rights.

The statement from the estate implied that litigation could follow for what it is claiming is unauthorized use of Jackson's "music, images, video and films" that seek to exploit Jackson's legacy.

The estate also claimed it has "numerous project in development" which, presumably unlike the aforementioned projects, "respect, honor and celebrate Michael’s life and legacy." The executors said they were were not yet ready to announce these projects.

Full statement from the Michael Jackson Estate:

"To clear up any confusion or misperceptions about unsanctioned Michael Jackson projects currently in the news -- including a Lifetime television movie and an animated film script recently purchased by Netflix -- the Estate of Michael Jackson does not license or permit the use of any rights it owns, including to Michael’s music, images, video and films, for use in unauthorized works seeking to exploit Michael's legacy. The Estate itself has numerous projects in development, all of which respect, honor and celebrate Michael’s life and legacy along with his extraordinary artistry that touched fans throughout the world. When the executors are ready to announce them, they will. As Michael said countless times about his own work, the quality goes in before the name goes on."

Netflix Near Multi-Million Dollar Deal for ‘Bubbles,’ Film About Michael Jackson’s Chimp. 17-05-'17

Netflix is set to take worldwide distribution rights to “Bubbles,” The Wrap has learned, a top Black List script and super-hot package that kicks off this year’s Cannes Film Market.

The streaming giant will pay just south of $20 million at a highly competitive auction, an individual familiar with the negotiations told The Wrap. It was not immediately clear what other studios or indie houses were involved.

The stop-motion film will be directed by 'Thor: Ragnarok' helmer Taika Waititi and co-director Mark Gustafson ('Fantastic Mr. Fox').

Bubbles was late pop star Michael Jackson’s beloved pet chimpanzee. The film is billed as a coming-of-age tale told through the chimp’s eyes. CAA handled U.S. rights on the project, with Rocket Science taking international.

BubblesBubbles (born 1983) is a common chimpanzee, known for being the one-time pet of Michael Jackson.

Isaac Adamson wrote the script, which topped the 2015 Black List. Andrew Kortschak and Walter Kortschak of End Cue will produce the movie with Dan Harmon’s Starburns Industries. Adamson and Lee Stobby will serve as executive producers.

“The main thing for me is to make sure it’s respectful of him and his legacy. I’m not interested in making a biopic,” Waititi said when he came on board in February. “I want to focus on telling a story that blends fact and fantasy, about an animal trying to make sense of the world.”

'They're Trying To Murder Me': Michael Sent Chilling Letters To A Friend Just Weeks Before His Death.
07-05-'17

Michael Jacobshagen
Michael Jacobshagen

Michael Jackson predicted he would be murdered in handwritten notes he gave to a friend weeks before his death of a drugs overdose in 2009.

The letters will bolster the belief of many, including Jackson's daughter Paris and sister LaToya, that the King of Pop was unlawfully killed.

In the 13 messages he declared: 'They are trying to murder me' and 'I am scared about my life.'

Their existence has been revealed for the first time by German businessman Michael Jacobshagen, 34 – who maintained a two-decade-long friendship with the star – in an interview with broadcaster Daphne Barak for Australian TV show Sunday Night.

Jacobshagen tells Barak how a tearful Jackson called him from a Las Vegas hideaway. The star was preparing for a tour at London's O2 but begged his friend to fly from Germany to the US to be with him.

'He was in emotional meltdown saying, 'They are going to murder me,' Jacobshagen recalled. After he flew out and spent three days with the troubled star, Jackson handed Jacobshagen the notes. Jacobshagen said that the notes kept telling him 'they' were trying to murder Jackson.

The singer never clarified who 'they' were but some notes refer to concert promoters AEG, which was organising concerts in London that he was shortly due to perform.

One said: 'AEG. Make so much pressure to me… I'm scared about my life.'

The 'Thriller' singer was found dead just weeks later.

The official cause of death was an overdose of the sedative propofol. His personal doctor Conrad Murray served two years of a four-year jail sentence after being found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for administering a lethal dose of the drug.

But Jacobshagen claims Jackson had been using propofol for more than a decade to treat his insomnia.

He says he has gone public with the notes now to support Jackson's daughter Paris, 19, who recently claimed her father was murdered. The interview will be broadcast next month in Australia, the US and other markets to coincide with the anniversary's of the star's death.

Adrian Grant ‘Thriller Live’ Interview In Macau. 05-05-'17

‘Thriller Live,’ the theatrical concert that commemorates Michael Jackson, is back in Macau. The show returned to The Parisian Theater last week after its successful run in September 2016.

Theater producer and creator of ‘Thriller Live,’ Adrian Grant, talked with Macau Daily Times and said that the team’s new cast members includes singers and dancers.

Macau Daily Times (MDT) – ‘Thriller Live’ is to once again perform in Macau due to its popular demand. Was the group expecting to have such an early return?

Adrian Grant (AD) – We thought the show would be popular in Macau because there are so many Michael Jackson fans in China, but it is definitely a surprise to be back so soon. However, it is also a privilege to be returning to The Parisian Macao, which has a wonderful theatre and we were honoured to be their first big production.

MDT – What are the main factors that the show has that make the audience want to see more of it?

AD – ‘Thriller Live’ is the ultimate celebration of Michael Jackson’s music. We don’t tell the story of Michael’s life, but we celebrate the King of Pop via ninety minutes of song and dance. It’s a feel-good show that the whole family can enjoy. I’d say we have one of the hardest working casts out there, and the audience certainly gets their money’s worth with a high-tempo, high-energy production.

MDT – Are there differences between Macau audiences and Western audiences? If so, does the group have a different approach/setting for these audiences?

AD – When it comes to Michael Jackson fans there is no difference! His music is universal – whether it is a song about love and peace, or a fast-paced dance song, it all has the same effect on audiences around the world. However, it is true to say that Michael loved China very much, and our cast certainly felt a lot of passion from the audiences in Macau the first time we were here.

MDT – ‘Thriller Live’ is named after the best-selling album of all time. What were the opportunities and challenges it faced as it demanded high expectations from spectators?

AD – From day one it has always been important to cast the best talent we could find. Michael Jackson was a perfectionist and always strived to do his best. I have had this instilled in me, and the whole production team realize that in creating this celebration of Michael’s work, we have to deliver a first-class show.

MDT – Are there plans to hold future tours in Asia?

AD – We have played in thirty-two different countries around the world to over four million people, but yes, there are still many places that we would still like to tour, including parts of Asia – Where Michael Jackson had such a loyal following.

MDT – ‘Thriller Live’ is in its 9th year. What can the audience, who have and haven’t seen earlier versions of the the musical, expect this year? Will there be changes in its dance moves, audio-visual and such?

AD – We are lucky that we have a great team of lead singers, dancers, band and crew, led by our fabulous director and choreographer, Gary Lloyd, and musical director, John Maher. The creative team has kept close to my original vision, but the show has changed a lot from its first tour in 2007 as we constantly look to improve the production. There are many aspects of the show that are updated each year, as we aim to keep it fresh for returning audiences and look to maintain the high standards that Michael Jackson delivered.

‘Thriller Live’ will be performing in town until September 3rd.

Teddy Riley Talks K-Pop And What He Learned From Michael Jackson. 05-05-'17

Teddy RileyThere are few people who can claim to have birthed a genre. Teddy Riley, the man behind New Jack Swing, is one of them. The 49-year-old music producer is behind some of the biggest hits from the late 80's and 90's including Keith Sweat‘s 'I Want Her', Johnny Kemp‘s 'Just Got Paid', Bobby Brown‘s 'My Perogative' and Doug E. Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew’s 'The Show'. Not to mention, he also co-produced Michael Jackson's 'Jam', 'Remember The Time' and 'In The Closet'. As a member of Guy and Blackstreet, Riley was also able to show off his singing talents in songs like 'Don’t Leave Me', 'No Diggity', 'I Like', and 'Take Me There' with Mýa and Mase.

You’ve started working with more K-pop artists as well. What made you decide to do that?

Yes. I decided to do that when I was introduced to K-pop back in 2008, 2007. I happened to go to Korea just to check out the scenes and I did a press conference and people really enjoyed it and it just kind of gave me a presence out there to where I said I want to go out and make some music. And I did it.

You mentioned Michael Jackson… in a Billboard interview, you said that when you were around him it felt like going to college because you were learning so much. What was the most important lesson you learned from Michael Jackson?

Well the most important thing that I have learned is how to write to piano more-or-less than a drum machine and synthesizers and all of that stuff. So the traditional way of writing is you get to a piano or you get a band in the room and you just come up with ideas and you tell the guitar player or the bass player to play this, let’s go this way or the singer will sing a few lines and the guitar player or the keyboard player would come up with something that will accompany the lines and the idea and that’s the traditional way of writing. Most times, people, have it already done and they start writing to it. That’s not traditional, it’s not organic. It’s still writing but it’s not as organic as how the traditional folks did it back in the day with just a piano or just writing it to frets and I’ve seen and I’ve witnessed all of that. I’ve witnessed having a session with forty to sixty to a hundred piece orchestra.

I’ve been there when they did 'Heal The World', and they had the whole full orchestra and when I saw that I said man, “I want that too Michael. Which song can we do that for?” And we wound up doing that for the song that we did called “Someone Put Your Hand Out.” And it was just amazing having the composer, Jeremy Lubbock, just write the string parts and the whole orchestra parts for that song. We also did it again on the 'Invincible' album, song 'Don’t Let Go Of My Hands' and there’s another one, 'Don’t Walk Away'. These songs, you know, that’s college, working with an orchestra. You can’t get no better, you can’t get more organic than that.
