Sony MusicSony Buys Out Michael Jackson Estate’s EMI Share For $288M. 31-07-'18

In May this year, Sony said it had reached an agreement with a consortium led by Mubadala Investment Company to acquire the 60% stake in EMI Music Publishing held by the Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund. The $2.3B cash deal, which is subject to certain closing conditions and regulatory approvals, was to give Sony about 90% of the equity in the EMI catalog with the rest held by the Michael Jackson estate. In its earnings notice this morning, Sony revealed it has this month acquired the estate’s 9.8% holdings in EMI for $287.5M which will make EMI a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony.

Sony was already in the EMI business after a complex 2012 deal that gave it 30% of the music giant. It has since administered the catalogue via Sony/ATV. The library includes songs by artists like Queen, Pharrell Williams and Alicia Keys as well as the Motown catalogue.

The EMI deal will make Sony the world’s biggest music publisher and is the first major acquisition under President and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida who took over from Kazuo Hirai. In announcing the deal in May, he said, “In the entertainment space, we are focusing on building a strong IP portfolio, and I believe this acquisition will be a particularly significant milestone for our long-term growth.

The deal comes amid much movement in the music industry as streaming services see a boom. Chinese giant Tencent is mulling an IPO of its streaming service, Spotify listed on the New York Stock Exchange in April, and yesterday Vivendi said it was prepared to sell up to 50% of its massive Universal Music Group.

Sony execs on an earnings call this afternoon in Tokyo said the company had the option to buy out Mubadala from the time of the earlier 2012 transaction and that a key factor in moving ahead now is the growth of streaming. “We will capture the upside of that and will achieve major synergy. This asset is really a cash cow type of asset and low risk and low return annuity type of asset. When we made this decision, our rating was upgraded and that’s one of the indicators to see the degree of risk about this asset at this time,” said Senior Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki.

Sony today reported Q1 earnings in the music division increased to $288M (32.1B yen). The full-year forecast is up 3% to $1B (115B yen).

Michael Jackson Mural Hits East Village As Spike Lee Preps MJ Block Party. 30-07-'18

At the corner of First Avenue and East 11th Street, tourists and residents alike stopped in their tracks, stunned by the mural in front of them.

It was a very familiar visage split straight down the middle. The right half of the face depicted an image of a young boy with a relaxed smile, round cheeks and a discernible afro on a white backdrop.

The left half, by contrast, showed an older, gaunt face with straight hair and alert eyes on a black backdrop. The faces were further bifurcated into crisp diamonds in all the colours of the rainbow, standing out from the neighbouring red brick facades.

The face was none other than the king of pop: Michael Jackson.

Michael Jackson MuralOn the wall: Mural of Michael Jackson, as a child and an adult, in progress on 11th Street.

The two-faced mural is reportedly the work of Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra, who has been heralded for multi-colored works across the globe, which span the gamut from South African leader Nelson Mandela to photographer Vivian Maier.

The artist, who grew up in a poor neighbourhood on the south side of São Paulo, has displayed more than 500 murals in Brazil and 17 other countries, landing most recently in this corner of the East Village. As of mid-afternoon on Monday, painters were still spraying the final touches on the vibrant homage, but it should be up-and-ready soon enough for the world to behold.

Spike Lee Block Party is set for August 25.

Michael Jackson's Brother Jackie Breaks Down On RTE Radio Ahead Of Dublin Gig This Weekend.

Jackie JacksonJackie opened up to Dave Fanning about the moment he found out about Michael's death

Michael Jackson's brother Jackie broke down on RTE radio this morning as he admitted his brother's death is still "very painful".

'King of Pop' Michael died of a heart attack at his rented LA mansion on June 25, 2009. He had taken a concoction of pills to help him sleep.

Speaking to Dave Fanning, Jackie Jackson said he was in Las Vegas with his wife and nephews when he learned that superstar brother Michael was dead.

He said: "I was walking through the Venetian Hotel and I had Jermaine's boys with me because they were visiting me for the summer.

"I was passing by this store where Michael buys a lot of his antiques and all of a sudden they had a monitor up showing Michael buying antiques inside the store. And all of a sudden this guy said, 'I heard Michael Jackson just died'.

'I turned around and looked at him and I just kept walking, I didn't think anything about it. We just kept walking, myself and my wife and Jermaine's sons, and then I heard someone else saying, 'Michael Jackson just died'.

'So I get on the phone and I call my mom and my mom said, 'Yes Jacky, he's dead. He's gone'.

The singer broke down as he revealed: "Someone had to drive me home, I couldn't drive home. It's very painful."

The Jacksons are coming to Dublin this weekend to perform at Dun Laoghaire's Beatyard festival.

Jackie said performing helps his family and the King of Pop's fans to process his death.

Jackie said: "It's good therapy for us to go on the road and perform in front of fans, because they want us to come out, to sing the Jackson Five songs, to sing some of Michael's songs as well.

"We honour him on stage and that's what they want, it's healing for them as well.

"We know that on stage at any given moment, Michael would be giving 110 per cent and that's what we try to give as well."

We May Have To Wait A Year For Decision In Michael Jackson Estate Tax Case. 27-07-'18

The Estate of Michael Jackson's long slog through Tax Court has been providing entertainment for nearly five years. Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009. The Tax Court petition was filed August 14, 2013, which is pretty quick work. The estate tax return, with a six month extension, was due in early 2011. Then there is the audit and a trip to appeals and finally the IRS and the estate agreeing to disagree and the IRS issuing a notice of deficiency, the Estate's ticket to tax court which had to be cashed in ninety days. The trial was on February 6, 2017.

Due to the Tax Court's lamentable lack of electronic transparency and my own thriftiness, I have to rely on new reports for the essence of the dispute. Hannah Karp summed it up in the Wall Street Journal .

The estate said it considered his name and likeness essentially worthless, valuing it at $2,105, as Mr. Jackson’s reputation was then tainted by child-abuse allegations and his strange public behavior.

She goes on.

Taxpayers are suing the IRS over that huge hack, of course.

But the IRS argues that the pop star’s name and likeness should have been valued at $161 million; that would be down from 2013, when it valued those rights at $434 million.

“No celebrity’s name and likeness rights have sold for anywhere near that much—not Elvis, not Marilyn, not Ali. And Michael did not make that much from his name and likeness—as opposed to his music—in his lifetime,” said Mr. Weitzman, noting that he only earned about $50 million from those rights while he was alive. “They are trying to take what Michael’s estate created for his children after death and extract an unreasonable and excessive tax.”

Michael Jackson EXPOSED: Reporter Reveals Real Reason Behind King Of Pop's White Skin. 27-07-'18

Sharon CarpenterThe 'Thriller' singer was mourned globally when he passed away nine years ago.

The pop star created numerous hits but many remember him for his change in appearance through the years.

From the mid 1980's, Michael’s skin became paler and rumours spread that he was bleaching it.

But Sharon Carpenter, who was at the hospital when Michael died, has lifted the lid on the changes to his look.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star Online, Sharon said: “The media had a field day with this.

“They used to call him horrible names in headlines and they said he bleached his skin because he wanted to be white.

“And there were a lot of jokes out there in the public – people ridiculed him for that rumour.

“Michael tried to tell the world he had vitiligo. He would say that’s why he bleached his skin because it was blotchy.

“Nobody wanted to believe it and then, in the autopsy after he passed away, it was revealed he did in fact have vitiligo.

“That was just heartbreaking, so heartbreaking.”

Vitiligo is a skin disease where the pigment cells of the skin are destroyed and white patches develop.

Sharon was a huge fan of Michael’s music, so it was a very tough day reporting on his death.

She worked on a tribute documentary called 'Forever The King: A Tribute to Michael Jackson'.

Looking back on the day, Sharon continued: “At the time that Michael died, I was out in LA working on the BET Awards. I was supposed to be doing some fun, entertainment-style shoots.

“But I was getting in some sun time at my hotel and looking on Twitter. I saw a tweet from Harvey Levin of TMZ saying Michael Jackson had been rushed to hospital in critical condition.

“People were running in the streets and I remember interviewing one family. You had the little kid, then the parents, then the grandparents and all of them were the biggest Michael Jackson fans!

“I think that showed how his music really spoke to everyone at the end of the day.

“It was a hard story to cover because I had my own personal feelings going on but it was an honour to be there while it was happening and to cover one of the biggest stories of the year.

“I ended up staying there for two weeks, covering what was going on. As sad as it was, that was a highlights of my career because it was such a massive story to cover.”

Ghosts Video ClipStream ‘Ghosts’ On Amazon Prime Video. 26-07-'06

Michael Jackson’s 1996 epic short film ‘Ghosts’ is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. ‘Moonwalker’ was released on the streaming service earlier this year but was swiftly removed after less than a few days. While there was no official announcement about ‘Ghosts’ becoming available it’s not clear whether the short film will follow the same fate as Michael’s 1988 feature film. This is the first time in 21 years ‘Ghosts’ has officially been released.

The film tells the story of a scary Maestro, played by Michael, with supernatural powers, who is being forced out of a small town by its mayor, also played by Michael. The movie includes a series of dance routines performed by Michael with songs taken from his ‘HIStory’ and ‘Blood On The Dance Floor’ albums.

The film was co-written by horror novelist Stephen King and directed by special effects guru Stan Winston.

Council Chiefs Want Michael Jackson Off The Wall In Perth. 23-07-'18

Prolific painter Ian Cuthbert Imrie recently unveiled a 10ft artwork of former Beatle John Lennon at a building on Mill Street, a conservation area which is being redeveloped by Perth and Kinross Council.

But the painting, which was put up without permission, has fallen foul of council bosses and property owners.

Mr Imrie, 80, whose paintings hang in galleries in New York, London and Dallas, was issued with a demand from lawyers representing the building’s owner, ordering him to take down the painting and repair any damage to the brickwork.

He has also received a similar warning from Perth and Kinross Council, giving him four weeks to take down his works or pay for a planning application.

Undeterred, Mr Imrie has taken the wraps of his latest creation – a 10ft by 10ft portrait of Michael Jackson.

And he is planning a similarly-sized image of Aladdin Sane-era David Bowie to complete the trilogy.

“I was sponsored by local businesses to create artwork for the city centre,” he said.

“Part of the reason I wanted to do it was because I was unimpressed by the quality of public art being installed by the council.

“The feedback I’ve had from people about the paintings have been fantastic. They really love the way they brighten up the area.”

He said he won’t apply for planning permission.

Ian Cuthbert ImrieArtist Ian Imrie whose paintings of rock icons John Lennon and Michael Jackson have fallen foul of council chiefs and property owners.

“The money I’d have to spend on that would cancel out any money we are making for charity,” he said.

“What I found sneaky was that when I received the solicitor’s e-mail, I asked them how they found out about the painting. They told me an officer from the council had brought it to their attention.”

It is understood the building, used by retailers New Look and Next, is owned by a conglomerate of businesses.

The message from solicitors Knight Frank states: “I act for the owner of the above building.

“Several pieces of your art have been pinned on the building without the owner’s prior consent. We would therefore ask that you remove these immediately and remedy any damage caused by pinning these to the building.”

The Edinburgh-based firm did not respond to requests for additional comment.

A spokeswoman for Perth and Kinross Council said: “‘Two murals have been attached to the side of a retail unit on Mill Street in Perth without planning permission from Perth and Kinross Council.

“The council is raising this matter with the parties concerned.”

Mr Imrie later received an e-mail from council planners, informing him the “portraits constitute a breach of planning control.”

Mr Imrie recently donated a huge painting of Jimi Hendrix to the Giraffe Cafe social enterprise, further along Mill Street. He is also behind a series of paintings in another part of the street, commemorating World War One.

Jennifer Batten and Navi GoldGuitarist Jennifer Batten Speaks Ahead Of Scunthorpe Show. 22-07-'18

Jennifer Batten stars alongside Navi in the King of Pop tribute show, which is coming to The Baths Hall in Scunthorpe on Friday, July 27.

There are only a few people that can be considered icons and Michael Jackson is one of them.

The King of Pop was loved the world over for hits such as 'Thriller', 'Billie Jean' and 'Smooth Criminal'.

His stage shows were Off The Wall and nobody knows this better than MJ's touring guitarist Jennifer Batten.

She will be visiting The Baths Hall in Scunthorpe on Friday, July 27 when The King of Pop tribute show moonwalks into town.

The production stars the world's leading Michael Jackson tribute artist, Navi. He is regarded as the world's number one tribute artist and was handpicked by Jackson himself as his official body double.

Michael also hired Navi to perform at two of his birthday parties where he gave him a standing ovation and described his performance as "incredible".

This year, Navi was also chosen by Hollywood and received critical acclaim after starring in the movie Michael Jackson – Searching For Neverland.

Jennifer was Michael's "right-hand woman" on three sell-out world tours. She was initially chosen to play on the Bad tour but Jackson was so impressed that she joined him on the road for the next 10 years, playing on his Dangerous and History world tours to more than 4.5 million fans worldwide

She also appeared on the famous Super Bowl performance.

Speaking ahead of the Scunthorpe show, Jennifer said: "I have been touring with Navi for the past few years.

"There are so many beautiful theatres over there. I have ended up taking a lot of pictures and doing a video blog.

"Usually I get to look around the place before the show."

Jennifer said she is keeping busy even on her days off as she is doing guitar workshops.

Speaking about the fans at the show, she said: "They are great. We have a lot of Michael Jackson fans."

Navi has been doing the show for over 20 years since he was a teenager.

Jennifer joined the show a couple of years ago and came over from the USA.

"The show has been a joy. I really like Navi's positivity. He is really down to Earth," she said.

Jennifer said she has worked with a lot of Michael Jackson tributes over the years but Navi pays homage to the King of Pop, rather than trying to be him.

The guitarist said the show is a big production with plenty of costumes and choreography.

Definitely the first time I worked with Navi, I was really stunned by how close his eyes matched Michael's," Jennifer said.

Speaking about performing with Michael Jackson, Jennifer said: "My last tour with him was back in 1997. The very first show I played with him, I could see generations of families. It just stunned me.

"I cannot think of any other act that would join the generations like that."

The King of Pop tour is now under way and Jennifer said the rest of the year will be spent working on her solo career.

The Scunthorpe show starts at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £22 for adults and £16 for under 14-year-olds.

Michael Jackson Is Just The Fifth Musician To Chart This Many Top 10 Hits. 19-07-'18

Michael JacksonMuch of the conversation last week when in regards to the charts revolved around Drake and the many, many chart records he matched (or broke), but he wasn’t the only superstar who managed to rise the ranks and make history in the process.

The late, great Michael Jackson also appeared on the Hot 100 singles ranking for the first time in years, scoring another posthumous chart hit as a featured guest on Drake’s 'Don’t Matter To Me', which is featured on the rapper’s new No. 1 album 'Scorpion'. The single, which uses previously unreleased vocals from the legendary musician, debuted at No. 9, and it was one of four songs from the lengthy project to kick off inside the top 10.

With another certified smash to his credit, Jackson collected his thirtieth top 10 in the U.S., which is a total only a handful of artists have ever reached. According to Billboard, Jackson is now just the fifth musician in history to appear inside the uppermost area on the tally with at least 30 different tunes, and he’s in the company of some of the most successful acts of all time (as if he couldn’t already be classified as such).

The other four artists who have sent 30 (or more) songs into the Hot 100’s top 10 include Drake (31), Rihanna (also 31), the Beatles (34) and Madonna (38), who remains in first place among all artists. 'Don't Matter To Me' helped both Drake and Jackson reach this important milestone, though it also pushed the former ahead of the latter, and now Drake claims the title of the solo male musician with the most top 10's.

Impressively, 'Don’t Matter To Me' is Jackson’s first top 10 as a featured artist, as he served as a lead artist on his 29 other titles, though he is credited as one of two leaders on a few smashes. It’s also worth mentioning that Jackson’s 30 top 10 hits doesn’t take into account the top 10 singles he collected as a member of the Jackson 5, as this list looks only at his solo achievements.

Ian Jeffers, Deputy Chief Executive at The Prince’s Trust said: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone at Thriller Live for inviting us to share the spotlight with them at this milestone moment. 'Thriller Live', created by Michael Jackson author and associate Adrian Grant and directed by award-winning choreographer Gary Lloyd, is unlike any other West End musical. There is no script or story, it is instead an eye-popping celebration of Michael Jackson’s music and dance legacy, bringing to life on stage his distinctive high-energy dancing and the pulsating sound of many of pop’s greatest hits.

'Thriller Live' first Moonwalked into the Lyric Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue in January 2009. It holds the record as the longest ever run of a show since the theatre started entertaining the capital in December 1888, and the record as the 6th longest running musical currently playing in the West End. It has been seen by over 4.5 million people in 33 countries and played over 6,000 performances worldwide, never failing to get a standing ovation!

Release Of An Extremely Limited Number Of The Soul Illustrated Magazine Of April 1971. 17-07-'18

Soul Illustraded (Limited Number) Magazine CoverFans of Michael Jackson and Jackson 5 are familiar with the Soul magazine of which very many units were devoted to Michael and the Jackson family during the 70's.

Well, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the birth of the magazine, Soul Newspaper (USA) has decided to publish an extremely limited number of 'Soul Illustrated' original issues of April 1971 in excellent condition.

This issue, which features the Jackson 5, also features Roberta Flack, Jimmy Hendrix, Isaac Hayes, Smokey Robinson, and more.

For the record, Soul magazine existed from 1966 to 1982 and was one of Los Angeles' first black music publications. Owning numbers from such a magazine allows you to get back into the history of Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 as if you were there.

It was in 1969 that the magazine published its first presentation of the Jackson 5 in its edition of September 8 and the group made the UNE of the magazine as of June 1, 1970.

Finally for all those who own the double album Live At The Forum, the magazine had at the time made an account of the two concerts and we talked about all this in 2010.

If the years pass quickly, this extremely limited publication of this special Soul Illustrated issue of April 1971 will most certainly allow you to dive into the HIStory once more.

Released: 04-1971
Issue: Vol. 3, #1
Pages: 66
Guide price + shipping 42 €

Missy Elliott To Get Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award At MTV's VMA's? 16-07-'18

Missy ElliottMTV has announced the nominees of this year’s video music awards who include: The Carters, Cardi B, and Childish Gambino, who has pushed their artistic videos to life by defining themselves. But none of them will be here with the help of 'Supa Dupa Fly' rapper Missy Elliott. It is about time that she gets the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Last year Pink took home the award in which she ranks with Madonna, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and many more.

This year, I urge the VMA's to correct a historical error by giving the award award to Missy.

Throughout the years Missy has shown so much support, respect and love to Michael Jackson and she often take it to social medias to voice her love the King of Pop. So we are so pleased that the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award goes to Missy this year! Better late than never and well deserved!

Congrats Missy!
