Rick Baker On Michael Jackson And 'Thriller'. 31-10-'18

During an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Rick talks about obviously 'Thriller'.

You couldn’t find a bigger fan of 'An American Werewolf In London' than Michael Jackson, who was in the midst of recording what would become one of the biggest-selling albums of all time. The King of Pop used his royal power to get the Werewolf band back together, tapping Landis to direct the music video for his record’s title track and bringing Baker onboard to do the monster effects. The landmark project premiered in movie theaters on Nov. 14, 1983. It would go on to win a Grammy for Long-Form Video and three MTV Video Music Awards, be the first music video enshrined in the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry, and hailed by Guinness World Records as “the most successful music video of all time.” And 'Thriller' wasn’t the only Baker-Jackson joint; the duo later collaborated again on the one-of-a-kind Disney experience, 'Captain EO'.

John Landis said to me, “Michael Jackson saw 'American Werewolf' and loved it. He wants to do a music video where he wants to turn into a werewolf. I’m going to send you a cassette tape — get some ideas.” So I listen to the tape, and I thought, “I don’t see making up this pop star. He’s going to be a pain in the ass.” I was completely wrong! First of all, Michael was incredibly shy; I worked in a funky, dirty workshop full of long-haired guys, and on the day he came in to do the life mask [a mold of the person’s face to use in the makeup design process], the first thing he did was hide in the bathroom. He just went in there and acclimatized himself.

But after that, he was great to make up. He was very patient and loved the process. Unfortunately, I found out on the day that John was going to do a making-of film, and I was like, “What are all these camera people doing here?” Now I’m thankful, because so many people come up to me and go, 'The Making Of Thriller’ video inspired me to become a makeup artist.”

Early on, I decided that Michael shouldn’t be a werewolf; I said he should be more feline, and made him more of a fantasy cat creature thing. The scariest thing for me in that experience was the size of it, and the [limited] amount of time that we had. I said to John, “I’m assuming you’re going to cast these dancers immediately because it takes us time to do the life masks and all that stuff,” and he goes, “Eh?”

The dancers were cast three days before filming, so I couldn’t do the makeup the right way. I had some generic things that I could use, but I felt we should have cooler stuff. My crew and I all have our own life masks already, so I told John, “How about if we have zombies featured more, and it’s me and my crew?” So the zombies that come out of the graves are my crew and my friends, while the dancers are generic pieces that we made [quickly]. It was like, “These are your teeth, and you’re going to be this color.”

Michael and I became fairly close after 'Thriller'. He came to my house a couple of times to watch movies and have dinner, and I went to his place with my wife to have dinner with Michael and Bubbles the chimp. And Michael actually dedicated a song to me! It’s called 'Threatened', and I think he was trying to make it another 'Thriller', because they cut in a Rod Serling rap. He dedicated the song to me, and then said, “I want to do a video of this song, and I want you to direct it.” I was like, “Uhhhh…”

Bad JacketMichael Jackson's 'Bad' Tour Jacket Up For Auction. 26-10-'18

Michael Jackson's black 'Bad' jacket that the singer wore on his first solo tour is going up for auction in November and could fetch up to $100,000.

Julien's Auctions said on Friday that the jacket, which Jackson signed on the back with a silver permanent marker, was worn throughout the singer's 'Bad' world concert tour from 1987-89.

The jacket, with multiple zippers, straps and buckles, is one of the late singer's most iconic costume pieces alongside his red and black leather 'Thriller' music video jacket that sold for $1.8 million at auction in 2011.

Jackson has become one of the most collectible celebrities since his sudden death in 2009 in Los Angeles at age 50 from an accidental overdose of an anesthetic he was using as a sleep aid.

The 'Bad' jacket is being sold by Texas businessman and philanthropist Milton Verret along with almost 100 other items from his large rock 'n roll memorabilia collection.

Verret also owns the 'Thriller' jacket, which he takes around children's hospitals, but is not putting that item up for auction.

The Nov. 10 auction at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square, New York, will also feature electric guitars played by Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, and U2 band members The Edge and Bono. The various guitars are expected to fetch between $20,000 - $50,000 apiece.

Part of the auction proceeds will go to the MusicCares charity arm of Grammy Award organizers the Recording Academy that provides health and other services to musicians.

"It's tough for musicians and artists today and this auction presents another opportunity to give back to the music community," Verret said in a statement.

BubblesA Special Gift From The Michael Jackson Estate To Bubbles. 26-10-'18

“In addition to the annual support for chimpanzee Bubbles’ care, the Michael Jackson Estate has donated a very generous gift this year of $100,000 to help in our expansion of new chimpanzee habitats. And now, in honor of the Center for Great Apes’ 25th Anniversary, the Jackson Estate has given another gift to help sponsor our celebration event on November 10th in Key Biscayne. We are truly grateful that the Estate honors Michael Jackson’s love for his chimpanzee Bubbles as well as his generosity with charities.”

The Center for Great Apes is celebrating its 25 years of helping orangutans and chimpanzees and providing them with compassionate care for the remainder of their lives.

All great apes are considered critically endangered, and every effort to protect these very intelligent primates is vitally important. The Center has worked hard to help great apes in captivity by not only caring for those who have come to our sanctuary, but also by providing education to the public about their behavior and needs.

Their mission has been to provide permanent sanctuary care for those apes who could never be returned to the wild as well as those who accredited zoos would not accept because of their humanized backgrounds as pets or entertainers. To date, the Center has provided a home for over 60 great apes who have flourished at our sanctuary with good nutrition, excellent veterinary health care, tall habitats with space for normal movement, and most importantly…companionship with their own species.

As they mark this special anniversary, we are celebrating with an event in Miami (the location of our beginning) on November 10, 2018. Please join them and hear more about our past accomplishments as well as our plans for the future.

Fancy A Piece Of Rock Music History? Michael Jackson's Jacket Up For Sale. 25-10-'18

An iconic jacket and shirt that once belonged to global superstar Michael Jackson will go under the hammer at the Wessex Auction Rooms near Chippenham tomorrow.

Both shirt and jacket belong to Swindon man Michael Gale, one of the world's foremost wig designers. He was asked to design wigs for Michael Jackson’s 'This Is It' residency in London in 2009. Sadly the residency was cancelled following the death of Michael Jackson in June that year but Mr Gale met the Jackson family and as a thank you for his contribution they gave him the Elizabeth Taylor jacket and an iconic red shirt, part of a collection of identical shirts, worn most notably during his famous televised interview with Oprah Winfrey in 1993. Along with the clothes is a hand written letter from Janet Jackson, sent to Wessex Auction Rooms to authenticate the items of clothing.

The special sale of vinyl records, guitars, music, film, sport, stamps and postcards is open for viewing today from 10am to 7pm, and from 9am tomorrow, with the sale beginning at 10.30am.

Other items in the auction include some amazing Beatles memorabilia, early issues of The Beatles Monthly magazine and a David Bowie record that is expected to make up to £1000.

Melvin Ragin "Wah Wah Watson", Guitarist For Michael Jackson, Dead At 67. 25-10-'18

Melvin RaginMelvin Ragin, known as “Wah Wah Watson” for the quivering, darting, wonderfully textured sounds he conjured from his guitar and wah wah pedal in countless sessions for stars of soul and funk, died on Wednesday (October 24). He was 67 years old.

“It’s with a heavy heart that we regret to announce the passing of my loving husband Wah Wah Watson today at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica,” the guitarist’s wife, Itsuko Aono, said in a statement. “He will be greatly missed, but music is eternal. Wherever he is, he’s groovin’.” A cause of death was not immediately revealed.

If Ragin had quit playing guitar in 1980, he would still be of vital importance to the pop canon: He joined the Motown house band, the Funk Brothers, in 1968 and later played on one of the Temptations’ most iconic singles, 'Papa Was A Rolling Stone', which incorporates long, flickering funk riffs, bluesy excursions and pointillistic solos. The shimmery, lingering guitar part after the line “it was the third of September” is a perfect demonstration of the wah wah pedal effect.

Ragin went on to appear on both Marvin Gaye’s sensual masterpieces, 'Let’s Get It On' and 'I Want You', Quincy Jones most successful solo LP, 'Body Heat', Rose Royce’s breakout album, 'Car Wash', Smokey Robinson’s criminally underappreciated 'Love Breeze', disco classics from Gloria Gaynor ('I Will Survive') and Greek singer Demis Roussos ('L.O.V.E. Got A Hold Of Me') and Michael Jackson’s solo starmaking LP 'Off The Wall', which still lights up clubs today.

“I Feel Bad I Have To Auction Some Of My Memories”. 22-10-'18

Following our article on October 5th regarding the Julien’s Auction taking place in November in New York and having some of Michael Jackson’s costumes going under the hammer, the full list of items is now available and you can see more personal items like some of his occasional wigs and hair pieces.

You might not know Carol LaMere, Carol was one of Michael’s hair stylists for many years and was responsible keeping Michael’s hair looking familiar and unique.

We met Carol during the Interview we conducted with her for Iconic Magazine #22 and stayed in touch so it was no surprise to receive a call from Carol a few months ago asking for advise regarding a very personal issue and the impact it might have on the fans.

The story is complex and personal but Carol opened up – she has a very sick daughter and is trying her best to pay the bills. Unfortunately Carol came to a stage where she has no choice but to separate herself of some items Michael gave her (to work with or as gifts).

As you can imagine, Carol is very caring and she was obviously very worried to upset fans by auctioning her items with Julien’s so she wanted you all to know why…

I started working with Michael Jackson just before he did 'Black And White' video. I grew to love working with Michael. One of the most genuine people I have ever worked with. I was probably his best kept secret as we spent so much time together. I feel bad I have to auction some of my memories, but I have a sick daughter who now struggles to make ends meet and I help her. It has gotten tough for us. Michael would not be upset I am auctioning some of my memories of him, not in the least bit. There is a story behind almost everything I am auctioning. So please understand. Sincerely Carol LaMere.

We promised her to pass on the message to you guys as we feel it is important we all know why and how those items came to Julien’s Auctions.

In The Closet Video Clip -On the set (03-1992)
From left to right: Michael Bush, Carol LaMere, Michael Jackson, Karen Faye and Janet Zeitoun on the set of the video 'In The Closet' .

One of the items you will see is a Michael Jackson Bust created by Stan Winston. This item was made especially for Carol to work on Michael’s hair pieces while he was not present. This Bust is clearly from the mould that Stan did for the movie 'Ghosts'. Many famous Michael hair styles have been created on this bust.

Another item is a long black hairpiece worn by Michael Jackson at the World Music Awards in London on November 15, 2006, when he performed 'We Are The World' and received the Diamond Award.

Carol recalls “It was pouring down rain at the time. It was amazing how his fans stood there in the rain.”

Other items were given to Carol as presents for herself or her kids like a fedora that was worn by Michael. Carol told us Michael came to do his hair one day with the hat on and then signed it and gave it to her son.

Another item is a framed art print of Michael Jackson signed and inscribed in silver marker “To Carol LaMere The Conquerer Michael Jackson.”

Michael Jackson: La Totale (Les 263 Chansons Et 41 Clips Expliqués) Book Is Released. 10-10-'18

Michael Jackson: La Totale (Les 263 Chansons Et 41 Clips Expliqués) Book CoverThe book 'Michael Jackson: La Totale (Les 263 Chansons Et 41 Clips Expliqués)' is released in France.

From the first hits with the Jackson 5 to the posthumous songs, it took no less than 608 pages to decipher, analyze and explain all the songs of Michael Jackson and his videos that upset the music industry of the time and inspired the following generations.

After a dazzling career in the Jackson 5 boy band, Michael Jackson built his solo career step by step. In the early 1980's, 'Thriller' became the best-selling album of all time. The Michael Jackson phenomenon will not stop anymore. Singer and dancer of genius, he is the symbol of an assumed and successful musical mixing that makes it possible to break down certain racial barriers. Very often forgotten or too rarely valued, the creative process of Michael Jackson is as fascinating as his works. Songs, short films, duets with other artists or his involvement in film projects reflect his taste for musical and scenic challenges, and his ability to renew himself.

Supported by countless testimonials from collaborators of the star, Michael Jackson, 'La Totale' unveils the secrets of manufacturing, long kept in silence, music and images that are part of the pantheon of pop music.
