Janet Jackson First Heard Michael's Hit 'Thriller' While Sat In His Car. 18-09-'18

Janet JacksonWhen Michael Jackson first revealed his song 'Thriller' to the world, you’d have expected him to have thrown a huge listening party with his friends and family.

However, it appears he did something very different, and a lot more humble.

Surprisingly, the star flung open his car door, invited his sister Janet into the passengers side, and asked if she’d like to hear his new hit.

A little less extravagant than a party, but a lot more modest – and we quite like it.

Speaking to The Official Vodafone Big Top 40, the 52-year-old opened up on how she and her brothers would make music, as well as the first time she head some of Michael’s hits.

She said: ‘Mike used to always throw me in the car and play me his albums before he played them for anybody.

‘[We would] just sit in the car and this major sound system, and just listen to everything from front to back. He played me Thriller and Off The Wall to see what I thought.’

She then went on to speak about her family’s song writing process, and it appears they all chipped in together.

Janet said: ‘If we’re around and there’s a piano and someone’s playing and someone said “I just wrote this the other day” and started playing it and next thing you know somebody is singing a melody to it and you know that would happen a lot and that’s how a lot of songs got created, that way.’

What To Expect From The Broadway-Bound Michael Jackson Musical. 16-09-'18

Christopher Wheeldon
Christopher Wheeldon

Director-choreographer Christopher Wheeldon shares preliminary details of the production.

Christopher Wheeldon It’s early yet to determine exactly what the Michael Jackson musical will look like when it hits Broadway (projected to bow in 2020), even for director-choreographer Christopher Wheeldon. “We’ve done one 29-hour reading, so we’re still working on the book,” he says of working with book writer and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage.

As previously announced the musical is a collaboration between The Michael Jackson Estate and Columbia Live Stage. Wheeldon is about to begin a dance lab for the show, which leads into “a four-week overall lab” as the duo develops the work.

But one thing he is clear on is that this is not a sweeping bio-musical of the King of Pop’s entire life. “The show is very much anchored in one particular moment in time,” Wheeldon tells Playbill. “I always bring up the fabulous movie that Spielberg made about Lincoln: You take one key moment, I suppose, in the history of someone’s life and then sort of use that as an anchor point for past storytelling and, perhaps, some kind of prophecy of what’s to come. We’ll be doing that with this story.”

Aside from the script, Wheeldon has another daunting task ahead of him: choreographing the man who popularized the moonwalk.

The Tony winner for Best Choreography for his 'An American In Paris' likens this project to that Broadway adaptation. “In the same way fans of the 'American In Paris' movie would have wanted and, I hope, felt that they came away with a real sense of the style of that period and of [choreographer and star] Gene Kelly and of [star] Leslie Caron, that might kind of be the route we go with Michael,” Wheeldon reveals. “I also intend to put quite a lot of Michael’s work in the show, as well.”

Prince JacksonPrince Jackson Vows To Carry On Father Michael's Charity Work. 12-09-'18

Prince Jackson vowed to carry on his father Michael Jackson's charitable legend as he collected the Motif Lifetime Medal of Honor.

The 21-year-old star picked up the youth advocacy award over the weekend at the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and promised he would continue the King of Pop's charitable legacy.

He said: ''This is a really special moment for me. My dad did some cool things, but his biggest passion was helping others. I learned how important that was from him. We called the foundation Heal L.A., because the goal was to further the cause of dad's Heal the World organisation and start locally by helping out at home. John and I got together with a few of our friends at school and decided to do little things to help out. All of a sudden, it just got bigger and bigger. We were giving more and hosting more events, and all of these amazing people started helping. Let's heal L.A. and Heal The World.''

And Prince thinks his father ''would be very happy'' with his charitable efforts.

He shared: ''Our generation, they focus on the wrong things, like, 'Who's wearing what? Who's doing what? Who's vacationing where?' There are real problems going on in the world that can be helped not by powerful people but by everyday people who just go in and devote their time,'' he said at the time. ''You should be decent enough to help out or want to help out your fellow man or woman.

A Drug Lord Helped Spike Lee Shoot Michael Jackson Video. 04-09-'18

Spike Lee was prepared to pay off a Brazilian drug lord so he could film Michael Jackson in a Rio slum.

But when I reached out for comment, Lee said, “We didn’t pay a dime. Just asked permission. The guy was a big Michael Jackson fan.”

The “BlacKkKlansman” director shot Jackson's ’96 music video 'They Don’t Care About Us' in the Santa Marta favela, a hillside shanty town that was controlled by Márcio Amaro de Oliveira, aka Marcinho VP.

“To guarantee Michael’s security, we had to speak with the drug kingpin Marcinho VP because the Brazilian police refused to climb the hills of the slum,” Lee, interviewed in London, told the O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper.

They Don't Care About Us Video Clip - On the set
Michael Jackson on the set of the video clip (Brazil Version) 'They Don't Care About Us', directed by Spike Lee.

Brazilian-born Brown University graduate Kátia Lund, who was working for Lee, was sent to speak to Marcinho and negotiate for protection.

Lund was so intrigued by the favela subculture, six years later she co-directed “City of God,” which was nominated for four Academy Awards.

“I didn’t get to know Marcinho. He sent me a message that if we decided to make the video with Michael [in the Santa Marta favela], we could lay $1 million on the street, and our film equipment, and no one would touch it,” Lee said.

Lee said Marcinho assured him, “With Michael Jackson here, this will be the safest place in the world.”

Getty Photographer Dave Hogan Shares His Memories Of The Late ‘King Of Pop’ Michael Jackson.

Dave HoganWhen British photographer Dave Hogan first met Michael Jackson in 1983, the ascendant King of Pop was wearing a tuxedo and standing in the corner of a side room in London’s Grosvenor Hotel.

Jackson was near the height of his immense fame, having just released 'Thriller' a few months before, a monster collection of songs that is still among the best-selling albums of all time in the United States.

He was in town for the British Recording Industry Awards, a star-studded event with other music-world luminaries like Paul McCartney and The Who’s Pete Townshend in attendance, and Hogan took the opportunity to do what most people probably didn’t in those days: approach Jackson for a chat.

“I went up and just started talking to him,” says Hogan.

“I said, ‘Hello, how’re you doing? How long are you in London for?’ And I think he was just a bit baffled because nobody ever really did that to him.”

That conversation began a long relationship between photographer and subject that lasted almost two decades and across several world tours, from 'Bad' in the late 1980's to 'Dangerous' and 'HIStory' in the 1990's to the '30th Anniversary Celebration' in 2001.

Hogan, a photographer for Getty Images, is known for his striking music-industry work, having captured such acts as David Bowie, U2, and Madonna over the years.

“I’ve just been working with Taylor Swift and the Rolling Stones — one of the biggest female stars and one of the biggest rock bands,” he says.

“But there was nobody bigger than Michael Jackson.”

Jackson, who died in 2009, would’ve turned 60 on August 29, 2018. Here, we take a look back at his career through the lens of one photographer who helped document it for the ages.
