Michael spends several weeks in New Hampshire on the set of On Golden Pond visiting his friend Jane Fonda and while there he forms friendships with the movie’s other stars Henry Fonda & Katherine Hepburn.

Michael was honoured with an award for Top Male vocalist in the Arizona Hall of Fame.

Bill Bray hires a new bodyguard names Wayne Nagin who will go on working for Michael until 2000!

John Branca becomes Michael’s attorney.

Randy leaves Hayvenhurst and moves in with his girlfriend Julie Mijares. He has a serious car accident and almost looses a leg but after 6 months and 7 operations, he finally manages to stand up.

Michael, Tito and Jacky spoke with the Japanese magazine 'Black Music Special' to promote their album 'Destiny'.

Michael and Randy attended the Doobie Brothers 10th Anniversary Celebrations at Friar's club in Beverly Hills. Michael performed a mammoth version of 'Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)' with Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Bonnie Raitt, Pablo Cruise and Brother Randy. January:

Michael does an interview with Sylvia Chase for ABC’s 20/20 programme.

John Pidgeon interviewed Michael Jackson at the San Fernando Valley by way of 13-year-old Janet, hears from the King of Pop about how he linked up with Motown, learned about the studio, how he sees his future and his defense of disco.

January 18:

Michael attends the American Music Awards where he receives three awards for 'Off The Wall' and he presents one to the Bee Gees.

January 19:

Michael's single 'Rock With You' hits #1 in the United States.

January 27:

Michael attends the NAACP Awards where The Jacksons receive the Image Award for best singing group of the year and Michael for Best Actor in 'The Wiz'.

January 29:

Michael Jackson performed the song 'Rock With You' at “Because We Care”, a UNICEF Charity Gala held at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.

February 5:

The Jacksons concert in Honolulu - Hawaii.

February 9:

'Rock With You'/Get On The Floor' by Michael enters the Top 75 singles chart in Britain peaking at number 7 and remains on the charts for nine weeks.

February 15:

The single 'Ben' of Michael Jackson is re-released by Motown.

February 16:

'Off The Wall’/’Get On The Floor’ by Michael enters the Pop singles chart peaking at number 10 and remains on the charts for seventeen weeks.

February 27:

At the Shrine Auditorium is Los Angeles Michael is awarded his first Grammy as a solo performer in the category Best R&B Vocal Performance - Male for Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough. Michael boycotts the Grammy Awards because 'Off The Wall' was not nominated for best album of the year.

March:

The album 'The Best Of Michael Jackson' is re-released by Tamla Motown.

March 1:

Michael is on the cover of Melody Maker with an exclusive interview: 'Michael in Wonderland'.

March 6:

Michael performs 'When You Wish Upon A Star' and 'Ease On Down The Road' in Disneyland for a Disney Channel Special celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Magic Kingdom.

March 23:

Michael is been interviewed by the Australian journalist Molly Meldrum for the program Countdown. Molly talks by way of phone to Michael about the success of the album 'Off The Wall' and 'Destiny'.

April 11:

Epic releases the 4th single from 'Off The Wall' titled 'She’s Out Of My Life'. Michael shoots a video for the song directed by Bruce Gowers.

Michael becomes the first solo artist in America to chart four top 10 singles from the 'Off The Wall' album!

May 3:

Dave Mason’s album including the song 'Save Me' featuring Michael on backing vocals is released.

‘She’s Out Of My Life’ enters the Black singles chart peaking at number 43 and remains on the charts for eight weeks.

May 14:

Michael appeared as a guest on the 'Wolfman Jack Radio Show'.

June 4:

The single 'Girlfriend' of Michael Jackson (written by Paul McCartney) is released by Epic.

June 16:

Michael Jackson in the Main Street Magic Shop during Disneylands 25th Anniversary.

July:

Michael Jackson backstage at The Forum in California, he was at the Queen show that evening and came to see the band afterwards.

July 31:

Michael is on the cover of Jet magazine with sister LaToya.

August:

'Love Lives Forever' by Minnie Riperton featuring 'I’m In Love Again' in duet with Michael is released.

'The Robert W. Morgan Special Of The Week For 8/9-10/80 Radio Broadcast - Interview with the Jacksons' album is released in the USA on Watermark.

August 10:

'Off The Wall' (Half-Speed Mastered) album of Michael Jackson is released on Motown.

August 15:

'Michael Jackson - Superstar Series Vol. 7' album is released on Motown.

September:

'Night Time Lover' by LaToya Jackson is released on Polydor. The song was written, composed and produced by Michael who also sings the background vocals.

Michael turned up at a nightclub in Oakland and Berkeley California, he did an impromptu performance of 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough and spent time signing autographs.

'Superstar Series Vol. 12' album 1 of The Jackson 5 is released in Japan by Motown.

September 3:

In recognition of their contribution to music, The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honour The Jacksons with a Star on Hollywood Boulevard’s 'Walk Of Fame' and Michael receives an award for his four Top 10 singles from 'Off The Wall' from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.

September 5:

The singles 'I Want You Back', 'Ill Be There' and' 'Lookin' Through The Windows' of The Jackson 5 are re-released in the UK by Tamla Motown.
