EminemJackson Buys Eminem Rights. 31-05-'07

Michael Jackson now owns the rights to Eminem's back catalogue, after his partnership company Sony/ATV purchased the publishing company Famous Music for $370 million.

Bjork, Shakira and Beck are also among the many artists whose publishing rights were sold by Viacom, of which Famous Music is a subsidiary, at auction yesterday (May 30) afternoon.

The acquisition comes just months after speculation that Jackson would be forced to give up the rights to the Beatles back catalogue because he was facing bankruptcy. Jackson outbid Sir Paul McCartney in 1985 for the rights to the Beatles music at a cost of $47.5 million, but rumours that the singer has been living beyond his means were reinforced when he sold 25% of Sony/ATV back to Sony last year.

Yesterday's deal means Sony/ATV own the rights to over 125,000 songs, of which Eminem is one of the most high-profile and profitable. In an interesting twist, Jackson once attempted to have the video to Eminem's song 'Just Lose It' taken down because it features the rapper dressed as Jackson and later rapping the words: "Come here little kiddies on my lap / Guess who's back with a brand new rap / And I don't mean rap as in a new case of child investigation accusate."

Speaking about yesterday's acquisition, Sony/ATV CEO Martin N. Bandier said: "The Famous Music catalogue is a world-class asset filled with evergreen songs that people know and love. The depth and breadth of the catalogue is what truly makes it great."

Sony/ATV Acquires Another Music Giant. 30-05-'07

Michael and Sony/ATV have announced that they have acquired another major song catalogue to add to their already gigantic holdings.

Famous Music LLC includes 125,000 songs, from classics to contemporary hits from stars like Shakira and Eminem. Michael has called this purchase a ‘milestone event’, and is delighted with the transaction.

Famous Music was founded in 1928 and is one of the largest independent music companies.

Martin Bandier, CEO and Chairman of Sony/ATV, thinks that; “The depth and breadth of the catalogue is what truly makes it great, and I strongly believe that the addition of the Famous catalogue and its songwriters to Sony/ATV is another step in our long-range growth plans. In addition, we are pleased to be entering the production music business through Famous’ Extreme division. Extreme’s valuable creative team and unique business model will be a terrific complement to our core music publishing business.”

The catalogues owned by Famous Music included Bjork, Boyz 2 Men, Duke Ellington, Bush and Beck, to name but a few. Also purchased are songs by Akon, Shapiro and Buster Rhymes, among many others.

This acquisition follows on the heels of the purchase of the Lieber/Stoller legendary catalogue by Sony/ATV.

All of this is good news for Michael who is, of course, co-owner of Sony/ATV.

Memorabilia Auction News. 30-05-'07

At the Hard Rock Resort Hotel today in Las Vegas, the auction of the Jackson Family memorabilia began. Michael’s MTV award for 'We Are The World', his gold discs for 'Off The Wall' and the Jackson 5’s 'I Want You Back' raised thousands of dollars, while a platinum disc for 'Billie Jean' reached only $100, as did a copy of the purchase contract for Neverland Ranch.

Some of Michael’s beautiful stage jackets were the most expensive purchases to date, but there is a long way to go, before the complete collection has been auctioned.

The Jacksons Auction

Universal Express who are the company auctioning the memorabilia, think that this auction is just the first stage of many more.

However, critics of the auction think that many items included in the catalogue were not originally part of the memorabilia purchased by Universal Express, and seem to have been added later. This is unconfirmed at this time.

Quincy JonesQuincy Jones 'Too Busy' For Jackson. 25-05-'07

Legendary music producer Quincy Jones has turned down the chance to work on Michael Jackson's comeback album, because he's too busy.

Jones produced Jackson's classic albums 'Off The Wall' (79), 'Thriller' (82), and 'Bad' (87). But as Jackson prepares to launch his comeback following his acquittal on child molestation charges in 2005, Jones insists he won't be contributing to the album.

He says, "Man please, I've got enough to do. We already did that. I have talked to him about working with him again but I've got too much to do. I've got 900 products. I'm 74 years old. Give me a break."

Michael JacksonJackson Gets $9.9 Million Party Invite. 23-05-'07

Michael Jackson is getting paid a massive $9.9 million to simply show his face at the birthday party of a Prince.

A host of A-list stars are being paid to attend what is likely to be the showbiz party of the year, as HRH Prince Azim of Brunei celebrates his 25th birthday in England this weekend.

Jackson, who hasn't performed since he warbled a few lines at the World Music Awards last year, flew in from LA yesterday (May 22) for the event.

However, the moon-walking star won't be getting up and singing at the event, the $9.9 million price tag is simply for the star's presence at the party.

A source told the Mirror: "Even though Michael won't be performing, the very fact that he'll be in this stately home mingling with all of the Prince's pals makes it worth every penny to Azim."

The bash is set to be held at a plush English mansion at a cost of millions, although the prince is the son of the Sultan of Brunei - one of the world's richest men.

Other VIP guests included Jerry Hall, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and Pamela Anderson, while Barbra Streisand is also being tempted over from the US.

Michael JacksonJackson Calls Off Bid To Stop Auction. 19-05-'07

Michael Jackson has dropped his bid to block a memorabilia auction featuring his personal belongings. The pop superstar was expected to appear in a Las Vegas court via video link yesterday (May 18) to claim he is the rightful owner of the items.

Henry VaccaroAsbury Man Henry Vaccaro To Face Pop Star In Court – APP. 17-05-'07

Asbury Park contractor Henry Vaccaro said he’s gonna teach this boy a lesson when he squares off against pop star Michael Jackson in a Las Vegas courtroom Friday (May 18).

Some observers who have read the article say it is racist for Vaccaro to use the word “boy” to describe a grown man when not used as a term of endearment. If you remember, Tom Sneddon once referred to Chris Tucker as a “boy” on the stand during Tucker’s testimony. The comment drew public criticism.

Vaccaro is expected to testify about his battle for the ownership — and his subsequent sale — of nearly 2,000 items of Jackson family memorabilia that the “gloved one” claims still belong to him and his siblings.

More Neverland for sale stories...The owner of a cut price retail chain in England has apparently put in a bid for Michael's Neverland Ranch in CA to turn it into a retail outlet? "We'd retain many of the fairground fixtures but combine them with a world-leading retail offering. It will become the perfect family shopping and leisure destination"a man called Mr. Yates said, apparently he's leading a UK consortium to buy the ranch.

According to some of the members over at MJNews Online, a HMV store in London's Oxford Street had posted a release date for an upcoming album by Michael Jackson on their 'future releases' sign. There was no mention of an album title or record label. The date stated 19/11/07 although that did include a big 'TO BE CONFIRMED'.
