Afrojack Took Deep Breath Before Remixing 'Bad'. 31-08-'12

At first, Dutch superstar DJ/house producer Afrojack wasn't sure he wanted to create two remixes of the song 'BAD' for the 25th anniversary reissue of the album.

Despite the daunting nature of the task, though, the Dutch house producer decided that his love of MJ's catalog was bigger than his fear of coming up musically short.

"The first time I heard about it, I was like, 'I'm not sure if I even want to do this because it's f---ing Michael Jackson. It's an honor, but I was like, 'are you sure?' I talked about the schedules not working and they tried everything to get me to do the remix. They even got a plane to fly me to the original studio where it was recorded in L.A. to make it happen.

You sit down and you first take a good, deep breath and realize what the f--- you're doing. Then you just do it. It's scary s---. He's passed away, he's the biggest legend of pop music ... ever. People will say it's disrespectful, it sucks or you can never touch anything Michael did."

Michael's family and estate personally reached out to Afrojack for the remixes:

"I accepted it and started on it and tried to make a 2012 version of the song for a new generation. And a lot of people like it and the family is happy with it and they're pushing it as one of he main singles, so I'm quite honored."

The producer said the family and estate chose him because they knew he was in a good place with lots of hype on his career, but also because Michael always wanted to work with the newest talents and sounds around.

"I'm pretty sure if the family says this is what he wanted, this is what he would have wanted. It's all done out of respect for Michael."

The 25th anniversary edition of Michael Jackson's 1987 smash album not only features a remastered version of the original release, but a second disc of rarities and remixes, a live CD and live DVD. Included are both an extended club mix by 'Jack with a faster tempo, harder bass line and relentless dance beat and another one with a rap by Pitbull that was put together by Pit's frequent collaborator, DJ Buddha.

Michael Jackson Documentary By Spike Lee To Run On ABC. 29-08-'12

Michael Jackson is coming to ABC, easy as 1-2-3.

The network said Tuesday that it will air "BAD25," a documentary about the deceased King of Pop directed by Spike Lee.

The documentary, which chronicles the creation of Jackson's 1987 album "Bad," will air on Thanksgiving. Further details will be released at a future date.

Using archival footage from the Michael Jackson estate, the film "focuses on the creative forces that pushed Jackson to make the 'Bad' album and launch the Bad Worldwide Tour," according to ABC.

The documentary also includes interviews conducted by Lee with Jackson confidants, choreographers and collaborators, including Martin Scorsese, who directed the "Bad" video, and Joe Pytka, who helmed the "Heal the World" video.

Lee himself directed the video for "They Don't Care About Us," from Jackson's "HIStory" album.

"This will be a very special Thanksgiving for all families to enjoy the genius of Michael Jackson," said Lee, who filmed the documentary in advance of the album's 25th anniversary. "Big thanks to ABC for allowing people to witness the making of Michael Jackson's 'Bad' album."

Released on Aug. 31, 1987, "Bad" won two Grammy awards and was nominated for six, and spawned hits such as the title track, "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man in the Mirror" and "Smooth Criminal." The album's anniversary will be marked by the release of deluxe 25th anniversary editions of the album.

The album's 25th anniversary will be celebrated on Sept. 18, 2012 with the Legacy/Epic Records release of deluxe 25th anniversary editions of the album.

Friedman: Mystery About Unreleased Songs From BAD25. 28-08-'12

EXCLUSIVE There are some mysteries about a couple of unreleased tracks including in the upcoming Michael Jackson “Bad25″ album. Two of the eight tracks– which are really wonderful–are unknown entirely to the engineers who worked on “Bad” in 1986. Those tracks are a lovely ballad called “I’m So Blue” and a slice of funk called “Song Groove (aka Abortion Papers).” Neither Bruce Swedien nor Bill Bottrell has any memory of them. I played the songs for each of them this weekend, and came up with no answers. “Michael must have gotten out and recorded with someone else,” Bottrell told me.

But don’t worry–they are completely by Michael Jackson.

Here’s some more info from the boxed set of Michael Jackson’s “Bad 25″ anniversary project coming on September 18th. Jackson fans should be ears up on this since we get some explanations for how the estate put the project together after Frank DiLeo unexpectedly and tragically passed away. Here’ an excerpt, plus a description of some of the unreleased songs I wrote about this morning. I’m telling you, “I’m So Blue” is one I cannot get out of my head. Very annoying, in a good way.

It is well-known that Michael might start a song for one album, and then choose not to use it. The song would later be pulled from his vaults for possible use on a subsequent album project. “Don’t Be Messin’ Round” is an example of one such song, and how it took shape at the time of BAD. Indeed, Bruce Swedien has called it one of his favorites.

For Michael, creating a demo is how he let someone (in this case Quincy and Bruce) know what he wanted to hear in the finished recording. It also was a vehicle for writing both the lyrics and the music (since he didn’t actually write lead sheets). And because he was such a perfectionist, this really meant giving them a demo that, to most people, would be considered a finished “record” and not a demo at all as Bruce Swedien, among others, have noted. This is an example of one of those “demos.”

As noted earlier, this is a song that Michael knew could be controversial and, as a result, he spent a lot of time thinking about the story for the song and the voice through which the song should be told. The song is about a girl whose father is a priest; she was raised in the Church and on the Bible. She gets married in the Church but decides, against the Bible, to have an abortion and she wants “Abortion Papers.” As Michael indicated in his notes, “I have to do it in a way so I don’t offend girls who have gotten abortions or bring back guilt trips so it has to be done carefully… I have to really think about it.“ This is an early example of a song with a controversial subject.

Generally, Michael’s process for creating a song would start with the chorus and harmonies first and it would build from there to include melodies and the lyrics for the verses. This piece shows a song that is clearly still a “work in progress” but with a full, finished chorus and harmonies.

Sometimes a song is written with a story in mind. In Michael’s work notes we found the story for this song – blind obsession. He described the story as “the girls who are over-obsessed with me, who follow me, who almost make me kill myself in my car, who just give their lives to do anything with me, to see me – they’ll do anything and it’s breaking my heart. It’s running me crazy. It’s breaking up my relationship with my girl, with my family. That’s the ‘Price of Fame’.”

When you listen to some early demos of songs, you can tell instantly what song it is. This is NOT one of those songs. It is an example of how different a song can be during its early stages of development from its later, finished polished version. If it were not a well known fact that “Smooth Criminal” was developed out of “Al Capone,” it would be hard to know that it had its roots in the material based on listening to this early recording.

Friedman: Remembering 'Uncle Tookie'. 25-08-'12

Roger Friedman posted the following on his Showbiz411 column: Remembering Frank DiLeo, “Uncle Tookie,” A Great Friend and Music Biz Genius.

Frank DiLeo died a year ago today, August 24th. But really, he died on March 21st, after open heart surgery at Cedars Sinai Hospital left him in a permanent coma. He never woke up. What should have been relatively common surgery turned into a nightmare. Some time during the night after the surgery, Frank had another attack or a stroke. He lost too much oxygen, unattended, and had no way of fighting back.

Frank was a famously colorful figure in the record business. His success with Michael Jackson on “Thriller” and then “Bad” probably inflated him beyond anything normal. I didn’t know him then, I met him later. Nevertheless, he was the architect of those triumphs, and Michael knew it. Over the years as a long line of swindlers and con men worked their way through Neverland, it was always Frank to whom Michael turned. In the winter of 2008, Michael was already calling Frank after many debacles. By the spring, when the London concerts were announced, it was Frank who Michael wanted by his side. If they’d gone to England, Frank was going to be right there.

Sony is about to release the 25th anniversary edition of “Bad,” complete with a Spike Lee documentary. Frank was working on that project when he got sick in February 2011. He knew more about “Bad” then almost anyone except for Bruce Swedien. He used to talk about the outtakes from “Bad” all the time. One song you’ll hear in the boxed set, “Don’t Be Messin’ Around,” was his favorite. I’m just sorry he doesn’t get to see all the hoopla and receive the accolades. And I’m told there are still unresolved issues between him and Sony regarding money. (Isn’t that always the case in the record business?) As much as Michael was a genius, Frank was the one who knew how to execute the singer-performer’s dreams.

It’s a terrible thing to lose a friend; I’ve thought about Frank every day since he left us last year. He had already lost his own friend, Michael. He was with him in the hospital room when Michael was pronounced dead. It broke his heart. Even through their times apart, Michael was the highlight of Frank’s professional life. Once Michael died, Frank was a little lost, I think. Like Michael, he always expected to reclaim their glory days. I know they’re together right now in heaven–Frank chomping on a cigar and getting ready to celebrate Michael’s birthday on the 29th. And they’re free of the burden of re-creating the most successful star-manager combo since Colonel Parker and Elvis.

Rest easy, Frank.

Katherine Wants Extensive Audit Of Estate. 24-08-'12

Perry Sanders, the attorney of Katherine Jackson, told RadarOnline.com, that his client wants her legal team to do an extensive audit of Michael Jackson's estate:

"My audit is being done to see the details of where the money is coming from and where it is going. The beneficiaries should be entitled to all detailed documentation so they can see what THEIR money is paying for."

On July 19, Katherine's lawyers submitted legal docs asking for "production of supporting documents for account current," and the docs state, "Ms. Katherine Jackson...hereby requests that representatives John Branca, John McClain and counsel for the Estate of Michael Jackson produce for inspection and audit all supporting documents for the Second Account Current and Report of Status of Administration and Petition.."

However, lawyers for Michael Jackson's Estate have several issues with Katherine Jackson's request, and said in their response:

"John Branca and John McClain object to the Request to the extent that it is vague and ambiguous as to the phrase 'all supporting documents for the Second Account Current' in that the Request encompasses thousands of pages of documents which potentially support the Second Account Current...Responding Party (the executors) objects to the Request to the extent that it seeks highly confidential business and financial information...it will not produce such documents absent the entry of a stipulation and protective order governing, among other things, the access to and use highly confidential documents."

Most of the contracts that the estate has entered into are sealed because they contain trade secrets and other privileged information, and this is routinely done to protect the best interests of the estate. Almost all of the major contracts, business deals and other transactions have all been presented to Judge Beckloff by the executors, in order to be transparent with Michael Jackson's estate. The executors have requested that Michael Jackson's estate be handled in probate court for another year.

Judge Mithcell Beckloff will weigh in on what documents if any, the estate will turn over to Katherine Jackson.

Executor Is Cool Under Jackson Family Pressure. 24-08-'12

While family members squabble in public over Michael Jackson's money, the man who holds the purse strings of the estate is a calm center of the storm.

As co-executor of Jackson's will, John Branca chooses to ignore the erupting dramas and personal attacks and keeps his eye on the future, which he says belongs to Jackson's mother and children and to the pop star's musical legacy.

He and co-executor John McClain have been successfully pursuing projects to pay off a mountain of debt left by the superstar, to assure the financial future of his three children and to guarantee that Jackson's music will live forever.

"When Michael Jackson died, he was near bankruptcy," said Branca, suggesting the future for his three young children was uncertain. "Now we know the kids will be OK."

Branca sat down recently with The Associated Press to discuss the current state of the Jackson estate and projects to preserve Jackson's image as the King of Pop.

They sent a lengthy letter that became public accusing the executors of deceit and manipulation of their mother and claiming that Jackson's will was a fraud. They have not taken any court action and legal experts say the time to challenge the will, which disinherited them, is long past.

Branca and McClain issued a statement calling the accusations "false and defamatory," adding "we are especially disheartened that they come at a time when remarkable progress is being made to secure the financial future of his children ..."

This week, they announced an agreement with Sony/ATV Music Publishing to administer Jackson's Mijac Music catalog, which includes such hits as "Beat It" and "Billie Jean." The deal is expected to generate enough revenues to pay off a remaining $5 million loan by year's end.

Since Jackson's death on June 25, 2009, Branca said the singer's personal debt of $200 million has been paid off and another $300 million tied to his ownership of the Sony and ATV catalogs has been renegotiated.

"Michael had a will and a trust and that's what we follow," he said.

The estate pays Mrs. Jackson $70,000 a month for the children's support, pays the rent on their mansion in Calabasas, and is picking up bills for other expenses including renovation of their Encino home.

Branca's AP interview was his indirect response to accusations by Janet, Jermaine, Randy and Rebbie Jackson that the estate was being mishandled. Jermaine later disavowed the incendiary letter and called for peace in the family. But Janet, Randy and Rebbie fired back with a letter of their own reiterating their complaints.

Brimming with excitement, Branca spoke of upcoming ventures he thinks would have delighted Jackson, especially a permanent Jackson-themed extravaganza on the Las Vegas Strip. It comes on the heels of the Cirque du Soleil Jackson tribute show, "Immortal: The World Tour."

"The Lion King" theater at the Mandalay Bay Hotel is being rebuilt to house the still untitled show, also a Cirque du Soleil production, which is set to open May 23, 2013.

"It will be highly theatrical and completely different from the arena show, which was more of a concert," Branca said. "We will have the opportunity to create something special and ground-breaking."

Declining to reveal all of the technical wizardry planned, he said, "We've got all kinds of tricks up our sleeves."

Every seat will have its own speakers, while the walls and ceiling will be used to create "a totally immersive experience for the audience," he said.

Unlike the touring show, there will be no live band and all music will come from remixes of Jackson's recordings.

Branca and co-executor McClain, a reclusive recording executive, say they understand Jackson's desires to take care of his mother and children — Prince, Paris and Blanket — financially and keep his music alive.

"We feel Michael entrusted us with his legacy and with the future of his mother and children," Branca said. "We're honored and proud and passionate about celebrating Michael. It's a labor of love for us. We love Michael."

TJ Jackson Official Co-Guardian. 23-08-'12

A L.A. judge ruled that from now on TJ Jackson will be an official co-guardian of Michael Jackson`s children Prince, Paris, and Blanket. He is permanently sharing guardianship with Michael`s mother Katherine Jackson.

TJ was awarded temporary co-guardianship during the confusion due to Katherine Jackson`s absence some time ago but that was made permanent today. TJ has received enormous support from the Jackson family to take a guardianship role, including Katherine and the kids. He has been a father figure to the children for years. As co-guardian, he will assume many of the day-to-day tasks involved in taking care of the children, including management of household personnel and security.

How I Paid Tribute To Michael Jackson - The Story of Michael Forever, The Tribute Concert. 18-08-'12

Andy Picheta, experienced music film producer, steps out of semi retirement and a comfortable life in the Scottish Highlands to work on Michael Forever, a giant tribute concert to Michael Jackson, featuring a host of international stars and Michael's family, children and friends.

It sounds like the project of a lifetime, a perfect return to the world of rock 'n' roll, but wanton greed, massive hubris, secretive executive producers and a very rocky financial structure combine to quickly turn the dream into a nightmare of angry fans, incompetent management and wary performers. Miraculously, Michael Forever made it onto the stage. Whether it should have is a question this book tries to answer.

It’s available on amazon.com for US and amazon.co.uk for the UK. It’s also on amazon.de, amazon.fr, amazon.it and amazon.en or at mytributetomj.

Michael Jackson's Dad Drops Wrongful Death Lawsuit. 16-08-'12

Michael Jackson's father has dropped a wrongful death lawsuit filed against the former doctor who was convicted of causing the singer's death.

Court records show Joe Jackson's request for a dismissal was granted Monday. The filings do not elaborate on a reason for dropping pursuit of the case, but two attorneys handling the case were recently ruled ineligible to practice law in California.

The Jackson family patriarch initially filed the lawsuit against Conrad Murray in June 2010, on the anniversary of his son's death. A federal judge refused to hear it and it had to be re-filed in state court in Los Angeles.

"It's good finally that this case is dismissed and gone," Murray's attorney Charles Peckham said Wednesday. "It's pretty clear that Joe Jackson intelligently and smartly dismissed this case so he, his wife and children can focus on Michael Jackson's life instead of the circumstances of his death."

He said Murray, who remains jailed and is appealing his involuntary manslaughter conviction, remains pained by Jackson's death and feels sorry for his family. "His heart goes out to them," Peckham said.

Jackson's mother, Katherine, continues to pursue a case against concert company AEG Live alleging it negligently hired and supervised Murray, who was giving Jackson nightly doses of the powerful anesthetic propofol as a sleep aid. Murray's treatments were conducted while Jackson was preparing for a series of comeback concerts.

Her case is scheduled for trial in April.

Joe Jackson's case claimed Murray repeatedly lied to paramedics and doctors about giving Jackson propofol and that he did not keep adequate medical records — all issues that prosecutors raised against Murray during his trial last year.

He had been seeking damages for a variety of issues, including loss of income and support, emotional distress, and pain and suffering.

MJ's Estate Wants To Cough Up. 15-08-'12

Michael Jackson's estate wants to pay part of Janet Jackson's monthly mortgage.

The estate – which manages the late King of Pop's financial affairs – has filed documents asking a judge to foot part of the property bill for the Together Again star's Las Vegas home, as the house is occasionally used by family matriarch Katherine Jackson.

The estate is said to be willing to pay a share of the mortgage based on how much time the 82-year-old Katherine - who is co-guardian of Michael's three children Prince (15), Paris (14) and Blanket (10) - spends there, gossip website TMZ reports.

The request was submitted before Janet and some of her siblings called for the executors of Michael's estate to resign, claiming his will was a fake, and a hearing is still pending.

However, it is now unclear what will happen as it was recently reported that Katherine is refusing to speak to Janet and her siblings Randy and Rebbie Jackson because she feels they deliberately prevented her grandchildren from contacting her when she made an unplanned trip to a spa in Arizona.

The three of Katherine's children are reportedly banned from entering her home in which she lives with her grandchildren after attempting to remove the three adolescents from the property, and Katherine is said to be "heartbroken" over their recent behaviour and doesn't want to see them.

A source said: "For the time being, Janet, Rebbie, and Randy aren't allowed at the home. The executors were asked to send a letter to Katherine's children after the trio, plus Jermaine, descended onto the house while Katherine was in Tucson, Arizona unaware that her grandchildren had been trying to reach her, and an altercation ensued.

"Katherine is free to see Janet, Rebbie or Randy, just not at that house. However, Katherine has absolutely no desire to see them right now because she is just heartbroken that they betrayed her trust and didn't tell her that Michael's children had been trying to contact her."

The current family feud began when Janet, Rebbie, Randy and their brothers Jermaine and Tito sent a letter to Michael's estate executors John Branca and John McClain demanding their resignation and claiming that Michael's will was fraudulent. However, Jermaine and Tito later released statements in which they said they regretted signing the document.

Fire At Neverland Ranch. 14-08-'12

A grease-filled barbeque torpedoed a big party at Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch this AM.

A large group was there for the shindig, when the staff lit the BBQ to get the coals hot. We’re told a grease build-up on the system ignited the hood system and caused some panic.

Three engines from the Santa Barbara County Fire Dept. arrived but the blaze had already been put out.

The BBQ was cancelled.

Jackson Websites Shut Down For Violating Copyright. 11-08-'12

Howard Mann, the Canadian memorabilia dealer who partnered with Michael Jackson's mother on a tribute book and websites that use Jackson's image and music, violated copyrights held by Jackson's estate, a judge ruled on Friday.

A federal judge in Los Angeles granted an injunction blocking Mann from using the websites "michaeljacksonsecretvault.com" and "MJgives.com" and other similar domain names, saying he infringed on the late superstar's intellectual property.

"There is undisputed evidence that [Mann] intended in bad faith to profit from use of Jackson's name, by registering multiple domain names containing his name or the initials 'MJ' to sell Jackson-related products," U.S. District Judge Dean Pregerson wrote in his ruling.

The case against Mann was filed by the executors of Michael Jackson's estate in January 2011, 18 months after Jackson's death. The estate holds the copyright to Jackson's image and music for the benefit of his mother, Katherine and his three children.

Judge Pregerson sided with the executors, who claimed that the websites run by Mann used copyright protected clips of Jackson's song "Destiny," a logo featuring the King of Pop and art from the posthumous concert film "This Is It."

Mann has worked with Katherine Jackson on several projects since 2009, which include a coffee table book entitled "Never Can Say Goodbye," a DVD, and a calendar. All were sold via Mann's "secretvault" website.

Mann claimed he obtained the rights to the material at a bankruptcy sale involving members of Jackson's family several years ago.

The "michaeljacksonsecretvault.com" site failed to load on Friday and Mann could not immediately be reached for comment.

Howard Weitzman, attorney for the Estate of Michael Jackson, said a court date set for September 4, 2012 will involve "how much in damages the Michael Jackson Estate is entitled to collect from Mann and his various entities."

Estate executors, John Branca and John McClain, said in a statement they were "extremely pleased" with the court's ruling which will now prevent Mann from "continuing to unlawfully profit from Michael Jackson and his intellectual property."
