EMI Sold To Sony/ATV, MJ Estate. 29-06-'12

The Federal Trade Commission announced the completion of its investigation into antitrust allegations, giving a green light to a deal that will sell EMI Music Publishing to a consortium led by Sony/ATV.

Other investing partners joining Sony/ATV in the $2.2 billion purchase are the estate of Michael Jackson, Abu Dhabi-based Mubadala Development Company PJSC, Jynwel Capital Ltd., the Blackstone Group's GSO Capital Partners LP and music business veteran David Geffen.

The sale means that Sony's arsenal grows to more than 2 million songs, including the 750,000 tracks (251 of those by the Beatles) that are controlled by Sony/ATV - the company’s joint venture with the estate of Michael Jackson. It will now also include 1.3 million tunes from EMI, with Motown hits, standards like "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," classics like The Police’s "Roxanne" and The Beach Boys' "Surfer Girl," plus current hits by contemporary stars like Norah Jones, Kanye West, Amy Winehouse, Justin Bieber, Usher and One Direction.

The financial structure of the deal is complex, and while Sony will administer the EMI catalog through Sony/ATV, its deal with the Jackson estate requires that EMI Publishing remain a separate company. Sony and the Jackson estate will have a 38 percent stake.

The purchase will also return veteran executive Martin Bandier to helm EMI Publishing, a company he ran for 17 years before leaving to head up Sony/ATV in 2007. In a recent interview however, Bandier said that outside of ownership interests, the two publishing powerhouses will essentially be merged and will be run as one collection.

"We are not going to run these as separate entities," Bandier said. "At the end of the day, we are going to be one homogeneous company, with one person - myself - running it."

Marlon Denies MJ Hologram Rumours. 29-06-'12

Marlon Jackson has denied rumors that the current Jacksons tour will include a hologram of his late brother Michael.

“That was a rumor. We would never do that. The technology would have to get a lot better.”

There had been reports that Marlon, Jermaine, Tito and Jackie were planning to use virtual technology similar to Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre’s set at the Coachella festival in California (USA) in April 2012, where late rapper Tupac Shakur “performed” onstage.

‘Motown 25’ Jacket Came From Mom’s Closet. 29-06-'12

The black sequined jacket worn by Michael Jackson during his historic performance in the 1983 TV special “Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever” belonged to his mother Katherine and was pulled from her closet at the last minute, according to his brother Jermaine.

“He didn’t know what he was gonna wear so he went to my mother’s closet,” Jermaine told talk show host Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday. “And she had this shiny thing that she wore, this black sequin thing and he said, ‘I like that. Can I wear it on the show?’ That’s what he did the moonwalk in… That was my mother’s throw.”

Michael Jackson's Tiger Dies Of Cancer. 28-06-'12

Thriller, a tiger that belonged to Michael Jackson when the entertainer lived at his Neverland ranch, has died of lung cancer at actress-activist Tippi Hedren's wildlife preserve in California.

The 13-year-old, tiger died June 11, Hedren said Wednesday. An autopsy was performed and the tiger was cremated. Staff workers will hold a private service when the ashes are buried in a section of the preserve set aside for animals that die there.

Thriller and her brother Sabu were born on November 20, 1998, and lived with Jackson until May 4, 2006, said Hedren, who starred in a number of Alfred Hitchcock films but is best known for her animal rights activism.

When Jackson left Neverland for good, his veterinarian asked Hedren to take the cats at her Shambala Preserve in Acton, about 50 miles north of Los Angeles.

Other Neverland animals, including giraffes, flamingos, orangutans, elephants and dozens of reptiles, were sent to other sanctuaries in other parts of America.

Shambala didn’t have a lot of room, but Hedren built a habitat next to the preserve’s lake with trees and a hill.

Michael Jackson Tiger

A tiger, formerly owned by Michael Jackson, named Thriller.

“Thriller was a real piece of work, one gutsy girl. She ruled Sabu’s life. It was humorous to watch the whole relationship. She did things to him that male tigers would normally never allow. She would steal food from him. That’s unheard of. She ruled the roost, was very independent and tough,” Hedren said.

Unlike many of the animals at the preserve, Thriller and Sabu arrived at the compound in excellent health physically and emotionally, Hedren said.

There are 15 tigers at the compound, but Sabu is now alone in the habitat he shared with Thriller and will probably stay that way, Hedren said.

Thriller’s role as Jackson’s tiger made her popular with visitors and media, Hedren said. “She didn’t care. She was not a diva and didn’t mug for the camera. We all loved her for it.”

Staff was trying to cope with Thriller’s death, Hedren said. “It’s very hard for all of us when these animals go away. Fortunately for Sabu and Thriller, they came in healthy and content. They had no problem with being in quarantine for 30 days. They adjusted so well.”

Berry Gordy Jr. and Motown are headed to Broadway in a new musical, reports the New York Times. Partnering with Doug Morris, chairman of Sony Music Entertainment, and producer Kevin McCollum (Rent, Avenue Q), Gordy will co-produce Motown: The Musical, set to open in the spring of 2013.

"It's the truth about Motown, how it happened, why it happened, and who the people were and the ups and downs of the whole thing." Gordy told Rolling Stone backstage at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in April. "I'm very delighted just to be involved."

The story, written by Gordy, begins in 1959 as he made his first steps towards starting the label and tracks his rise in the music business. The musical will include some new songs along with hits from the Motown catalog. Artists including Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross and Michael Jackson will appear as characters in the show.

"We're dealing with the truth of what happened and how it happened, and all the fun and troubles we had in trying to make the magic that was made through people like Smokey, who was the soul of Motown and the heart of Motown," said Gordy.

Jermaine Talks About Brother's Influence. 25-06-'12

Jermaine Jackson believes that Barack Obama would not have become President had it not been for his brother, Michael.

Speaking to The Independent on the eve of the third anniversary of Michael Jackson's death, Jermaine expressed his deep-seated disappointment at how his brother has been commemorated in America since his death in 2009. "I think America has let Michael down. If he was from any other country they would have erected permanent tributes to him for what he's done for music."

Citing Michael’s interview with Oprah Winfrey in 1993 in which the singer admitted to suffering from Vitiligo, Jermaine claimed the admission had the combined effect of reiterating his brother's African American heritage while propelling Winfrey to fame. Winfrey's backing of Obama in the 2007 primaries is widely cited by many as the moment that secured his nomination as leader of the Democrats. "Michael invited her [to Neverland] and that [interview] was the moment that put her in 90 countries around the world and made her successful," Jermaine said. "What did she do with that success? She put it behind Obama."

Jermaine went on to speak about the British tabloid press and the effect it had on his brother, blaming The Sun for coining the "Wacko Jacko" nickname that hounded the singer for years. "The bully mentality of the British tabloids was particularly upsetting because it had the effect of denying Michael's humanity, making him a simple caricature to poke fun at."

When informed of the Leveson Enquiry and the latest scandals to beset The Sun, Jermaine said, "I'm glad that the British press are starting to be aware of the effect of the things they did. It seems as though everyone is beginning to understand the reality of things and the truth is coming out. The question is why didn't they understand him while he was here?"

Jermaine says that the Jackson family remain convinced that we haven't heard the whole story on what really took place the night his brother died. "The family still need to know who else came into the house that night. In time we might get answers but there will never be closure."

He added, "No one knew Michael like we did. He wasn't weird or strange he was just different. And it is only since his death that people are finally beginning to truly understand him."

Michael Jackson's Brothers Go Back To Hometown Of Gary. 23-06-'12

Four of Michael Jackson's brothers returned to their old stomping grounds Friday with accolades from the city's mayor.

"This is where it all started, this is our home," said Jermaine Jackson while standing outside the house on 2300 Jackson St. where the family grew up and launched their musical careers.

Marlon, Jermaine, Tito and Jackie Jackson each received keys to the city from Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson in front of friends and family.

The "Unity" tour stops at 16-cities, including a show Friday in Merriville. The tour showcases four members of Jackson 5 group. Michael, the fifth member of the iconic group, died on June 25, 2009 from an overdose of the anesthetic propofol.

"For me, this cycle that comes around every year — this day, that day — that doesn't affect me because it affects me every day," said Marlon on Wednesday before the tour kicked off. "When that day comes around, it's the same. You learn to live with it. I still wake up sometimes and go, 'Jeez. I can't believe my brother's not here.'"

The King of Pop's spirit lives on with them and his spirit will be in the house with them as they perform, Jackie told the Chicago Sun-Times.

The brothers also carried that spirit to the place they all once called home.

Tito told the Sun-Times what a great time he had living in Gary and remembered playing little league behind their home growing up.

Klein In Photographer Dispute. 22-06-'12

Arnold Klein is in dispute with David La Chapelle, a photographer who portrayed Michael as Christ, over ownership of that image. The piece in question was part of a collection called ‘American Jesus’ that La Chapelle showed in galleries around the world after Michael’s death. It is a Pieta, the traditional religious art scene of the Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Jesus, with Michael in place of Christ. The work has been valued at $48,000.

Klein is under scrutiny with the police for his treatment of Michael, and has declared bankruptcy. The artwork was damaged in a fire at Klein’s home and he returned it to the artist for repair. La Chappelle refused to return it and said the piece wasn’t a gift at all, but compensation for dermatological services that Klein had failed to provide.

The police are not interested in pursuing the dispute.

Emotional Jacksons Prepare To Tour. 20-06-'12

Jermaine Jackson has confessed he has been in tears over the loss of his brother Michael as he rehearses for his upcoming tour.
The star and three of his brothers - Marlon, Tito and Jackie - are returning to the stage as The Jacksons, almost three years after the King of Pop died.

Jermaine said: "The brothers don't know this, but I've broken down several times and cried during rehearsals. I'm so used to Michael being on the right and then Marlon, Jackie, on and on. It's just something we never get used to."

The brothers are launching their Unity tour today (Wednesday), five days ahead of the third anniversary of Michael's death from an overdose of the anaesthetic propofol on June 25, 2009.

"For me, this cycle that comes around every year - this day, that day - that doesn't affect me because it affects me every day," said Marlon. "When that day comes around, it's the same. You learn to live with it. I still wake up sometimes and go, 'Jeez. I can't believe my brother's not here'."

Following Michael's death, the four brothers appeared in a reality TV series The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty, which chronicled their loss and attempt to stage a comeback.

Jermaine said the brothers have wanted to reunite on their own for years, but after Michael's death they needed time to heal - and the tour is another step.

He revealed the group will pay tribute to Michael during their shows with a medley that will conclude with the tune Gone Too Soon.

While various combinations of the brothers have reunited to perform over the years, this tour of the US will mark the first time the brothers have been on the road together since their Victory outing in 1984.

Spike Lee MJ Documentary. 14-06-'12

Director Spike Lee let it slip that he is currently working on a new Michael Jackson documentary.

Lee told Indie Wire, "What I'm doing now is a documentary on the 25th anniversary of Michael Jackson's Bad album."

He went on to drop a few names of the musical artists interviewed for the project - Chris Brown and Usher rumored to be among them. Lee bristled, however, when asked who he thought might become the "new" King of Pop.

"Interesting thing is that we interviewed Justin Bieber for this documentary, and you know he idolizes Michael. And I love Kanye and Jay [Z] and everybody else, but there's only one Michael Jackson. So if there's only one Michael Jackson, how can anybody be the 'new' King of Pop?"

There is no word on a release date for the documentary.

Michael Jackson's Daughter Bullied At School. 11-06-'12

Michael Jackson's 14-year-old daughter was bullied when she started school.

Paris Jackson - the only daughter of the late 'Thriller' singer - used to be educated at home alongside her brothers, Prince Michael, 15, and 10-year-old Prince Michael II, who is known as Blanket, but following their father's death in 2009 it was decided they would attend school.

However, Paris - who is trying to carve out a career as an actress - admits their enrolment didn't go down too well with the other students and says she was picked on, but refused to let them upset her.

She said: ''People try, but it doesn't always work. At school, and some people try to cyber bully me. They try to get to me with words, but that doesn't really work.''

Paris also revealed she is wary of making new friends as she's not sure if they like her for her or because she's famous.

She told talk show host Oprah Winfrey: ''If I feel someone is being fake to me, I will just push away.''

Paris also spoke about her childhood and said her father - who died of acute Propofol intoxication in June 2009 - wanted her and her brothers to have as much fun as possible because he felt he had missed out having become a singer at a very young age.

She said: ''He told us that when he was younger he didn't really have a childhood. He would always be stuck in the studio singing while the kids were out playing. He wanted us to have that.''

Paris and her brothers are now in the care of Michael's mother Katherine Jackson.

In an interview with 'Access Hollywood' Michael's sister LaToya said that she thinks her brother raised 'balanced' kids because he masked them in public:

"That is the reason why he would mask them, because when they would go out without him, they could do whatever they [wanted] and they had a normal life, which is great.

They got a chance to experience that. And they would go with the nanny [without the masks], nobody knew who they were. But with him, he kept the masks on so people wouldn't recognize them or know; and now they're very balanced kids, which is great.

LaToya went on to say, "Truthfully, I think Michael would have kept them secluded still. That's just the way he was raising them ... but my mother felt they needed to be unmasked and they needed to experience life for what it is.

I just love them all. They're so great. He's done a great job and my mother's doing an incredible job with them."

Michael Jackson Estate Sued For $1 BILLION In Bizarre Lawsuit. 07-06-'12

Michael Jackson owes a convicted criminal $1 BILLION for exploiting personal details about her life in his music -- this according to a bizarre and, dare we say, bogus lawsuit.

Kimberly Griggs filed the case in San Diego -- claiming she and Jackson had an intimate relationship beginning in 1979, which she says he chronicled in his albums "Off the Wall," "Thriller," "Bad," "Dangerous," and his greatest hits album ... "Number Ones."

Griggs -- who spent years in prison for burglary and robbery -- claims she was pissed that Michael exposed her personal secrets in his tunes, so to make things nice he promised to give her the rights to the songs.

She says she was stunned when MJ died and she was completely left out of his estate.

According to the handwritten lawsuit, Griggs wants $1 billion in damages.

Calls to MJ's Estate weren't returned, but we're guessing their response begins with the letters b and s.
