This Lost '80s Hit By Rufus Almost Made It Onto Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' Album. 29-12-'14

Ain't Nobody Single CoverRufus was a multi-racial funk group from Chicago and with the dynamic vocals of Chaka Kahn, they scored a total of ten Top 40 hits with their most recognizable hit being 'Tell Me Something Good' from 1974.

As the ‘80s began, Kahn wanted to break free of the group and go solo but still owed the record company several more albums with Rufus. Her contract was finally fulfilled in 1983, cumulating with the single 'Ain't Nobody'.

'Ain't Nobody' was written by Rufus keyboardist David Wolinski and when he brought the song to long-time Rufus producer Quincy Jones, he lobbied to use the song on Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' album. In the end, Wolinski felt it should be sung by Kahn and be included on Rufus' swan song album.

The single reached No. 22 on the charts and no less than three cover versions of 'Ain't Nobody' reached the Top 100 charts in the ‘90s, with the most successful remake being LL Cool J's version off the 'Beavis and Butthead Do America' soundtrack.

Paul McCartney To Bid For Beatles Catalogue 30 Years After Losing It To Michael Jackson. 29-12-'14

Paul McCartneySIR Paul McCartney may be set to bid for The Beatles catalogue he lost out on 30 years ago when he was outbid by Michael Jackson.

According to The Sun, leaked emails from Sony Entertainment reveal that company bosses discussed a plan to sell its music business, which includes a share in more than 250 songs penned by Lennon and McCartney for The Beatles.

The former-Beatle was outbid by Michael Jackson the last time the catalogue came up for auction in 1985.

At the time, the Thriller hit-maker paid £30million for the lot and later sold half a share to Sony for £64million.

A music source told the publication: "Paul will want to buy the catalogue".

Meanwhile, the 72-year old said it was "ridiculous" that it is now possible to study the Fab Four at university.

Taking part in a Q&A on his official website, Macca was asked by a student studying for an MA in Popular Music what he felt about the existence of such courses.

"For me it's ridiculous, and yet very flattering," responded the music legend.

"Ridiculous because we [The Beatles] never studied anything, we just loved our popular music: Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino, etc. And it wasn’t a case of 'studying' it. I think for us, we'd have felt it would have ruined it to study it.

"We wanted to make our own minds up just by listening to it. So our study was listening. But to be told – as I was years ago now – that The Beatles were in my kid's history books?

"That was like 'What?! Unbelievable, man!' Can you imagine when we were at school, finding yourself in a history book?!"

He also added that thought studying music didn't necessarily make you a better musician.

"I don’t think that by studying popular music you can become a great popular musician. Someone like Bob Dylan, you can’t make," he said.

Michael Jackson Estate Turned Down King Of Pop Cameo In New 3D Adam Sandler Flick. 29-12-'14

The Estate Of Michael JacksonMichael Jackson– the beloved version, from the 1980's– will not be making a film comeback anytime soon. According to emails culled from the voluminous Sony hack, Sony Pictures wanted use of Michael’s likeness for their summer 2015 3D Adam Sandler movie “Pixels.” They were turned down flat.

The emails turned up in a group found by musician Val Broeksmit, who’s been releasing his findings much to Sony’s chagrin on Twitter. Sony has vowed to sue Twitter and Broeksmit. But so much of the material is already coursing its way through the internet that it might be difficult to rebottled this genie.

According to the emails, a production exec reached out to Sony’s Amy Pascal for help persuading Jackson estate lawyers John Branca and Karen Langford in their quest to include Jackson with a bunch of 80's icons including — this is from the email– Bruce Springsteen, Mr. T, Ronald Reagan and Hall & Oates.

Langford tells Jonathan Kadin that, off the record, she might consider letting them use Jackson’s image if the fee were in the high six figures. But Kadin says the studio usually pays $20,000 for cameos such as these, and the budget allows for a maximum of $25,000. So it’s not going to happen even though Kadin says “Sandler is anxious for this to happen.” Kadin notes that the request for such a high fee was a polite way for the Jackson estate to turn them down.

Langford, Kadin says, recalls Jackson’s infamous cameo in "Men in Black 2" and that it wasn’t received well. You may recall that Michael wouldn’t give Sony Music the final master tapes for the 'Invincible' album to release until they secured him this role.

The Jacksons

Sony Corp.Sony Planned To Sell Music-Publishing Unit Owning Beatles. 24-12-'14

Sony Corp. (SNE) was considering the sale of its music-publishing business, including a partnership with Michael Jackson’s estate that owns the Beatles catalog, as recently as last month, e-mails released by hackers show.

The “top secret” plan was being handled in the U.S. by Sony Entertainment Chief Executive Officer Michael Lynton, Sony Corp. of America President Nicole Seligman and their U.S. Chief Financial Officer Steve Kober, according to a Nov. 21 e-mail from Kober. The company had concluded the business had few growth prospects.

Top management at Tokyo-based Sony was concerned about the complex ownership and governance of the business, whose owners also include billionaire David Geffen and Abu Dhabi investors. Details of the sale plan, including possible terms or suitors, couldn’t be determined. The documents were released as part of the cyber-attack on Sony over the movie “The Interview.”

Katie Schroeder, a spokeswoman for Sony at Rubenstein Communications, declined to comment.

Publishing accounts for 14 percent of Sony’s music revenue, the main part being recorded music. Sony Corp. (6758)’s Chief Financial Officer Kenichiro Yoshida raised questions about the future of music publishing in an Oct. 3 e-mail to his boss, CEO Kazuo Hirai, and Lynton, in a prelude to a meeting of the three, according to messages released by the hackers.

“I’d like to hear your thoughts on the Music Publishing business, which has a rather complex capital and governance structure and is impacted by the market shift to streaming,” Yoshida wrote in the message.

Sony Deliberations
Sony’s deliberations on the publishing business were included in a planning document sent to at least half a dozen Sony executives, according to the Nov. 21 e-mail. That included a presentation that outlined they were considering the sale.

“We are very surprised that the attached listing includes the comment about the sale of Sony/ATV,” Kober wrote. “As you know quite well, this is a top-secret project that is being handled by me working directly with Michael and Nicole.”

Sony’s American depositary receipts rose 0.4 percent to $20.86 on Dec. 23 in New York. They have advanced 21 percent this year.

The publishing division includes Sony/ATV Music Publishing and EMI Music Publishing.

Music Mergers
Sony/ATV was established in 1995 as a joint venture between Sony and Jackson, who had acquired ATV 10 years earlier. Former Beatle Paul McCartney had also tried to purchase the catalog.

In 2012, Sony paid $2.2 billion for the larger EMI Music Publishing, along with investors including Jackson’s estate, Blackstone Group’s GSO Capital Partners LP, Geffen and Mubadala Development Co. owned by the Abu Dhabi government. Sony/ATV administers EMI on behalf of the investors. Messages left for Geffen, Mubadala and Blackstone weren’t returned.

Music publishers collect royalties from album sales, use on TV and other performances. The combined Sony publishing business represents stars from Bruce Springsteen to Lady Gaga and more than 2 million songs, including 'New York, New York,' 'Jailhouse Rock' and 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine.'

The Japanese company and Jackson’s estate each own half of Sony/ATV, which owns more than 750,000 songs, according to a press release from 2012. EMI Music Publishing, in which Sony holds a 30 percent stake, has 1.3 million songs in its catalog.

Together, Sony/ATV and EMI represent the world’s biggest music publishing business, with Sony estimating a global market share of more than 30 percent.

The music publishing business generates about $500 million in annual revenue and $100 million in operating profit, according to a mid-range plan of Sony’s music business in October that was released by the hackers.

Publishing Growth
Sony’s music-publishing business will probably see sales rise 13 percent over three years to $617 million by fiscal year 2018, according to the mid-range plan circulated internally. Operating profit may rise 23 percent to $123 million during that period.

The e-mails were released as part of a devastating hack on Sony that the FBI said was committed by North Korea over the Hollywood studio’s plan to release the satirical movie “The Interview,” about an assassination plot against the nation’s leader, Kim Jong Un.

J K RowlingJ K Rowling Mentions About Michael Jackson On Pottermore. 21-12-'14

J K Rowling did not feature zombies in her 'Harry Potter' books because she is a huge fan of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' where the 'King of Pop' danced as a zombie.

J K Rowling updated her latest entry on the 'Harry Potter' publishing website Pottermore where she talks about animated corpses which Voldemort used to guard his Horcrux and why she created the species 'Inferi' and also unexpectedly mentioned Jackson, reported Ace Showbiz.

I had several good reasons for not wishing to call the guardians of the locket Horcrux 'zombies'. Firstly, zombies are not part of British folklore, but associated with the myths of Haiti and parts of Africa. While students of Hogwarts would learn about them, they would not expect to meet them walking down the streets of Hogsmeade.

"Secondly, while the zombies of Vodou tradition can be nothing more than reanimated corpses, a second but related tradition has it that the sorcerer uses their souls, or part of their souls, to sustain himself.

"This conflicted with my Horcrux story, and I did not wish to suggest that Voldemort had any more use for his Inferi than as guards of his Horcrux.

"Lastly, zombies have been represented and reinterpreted on film so often in the last fifty years that they have a whole raft of associations that were of no use to me. I'm part of the 'Thriller' generation; to me, a zombie will always mean Michael Jackson in a bright red bomber jacket," Rowling said.

Rowling has been sharing her thoughts about characters or creatures for the Christmas event on Pottermore since December 12. Last week, she wrote about vampires and denied that Snape was one of them despite his pale complexion.

Most of her dolls have restyled / rerooted hair and repainted faces so that they match to how Michael looked when he wore that specific outfit.

On the page 'about me' you can find a video which shows how Mary make the outfits and what kind of material she use.

You will find all the dolls on this website sorted by era or event, they are showed in slideshows and overviews.

Memorabilia From Historic Caribou Ranch® And Recording Studio To Be Auctioned By Leslie Hindman Auctioneers. 19-12-'14

On January 24, 2015 Leslie Hindman Auctioneers will conduct the sale of studio memorabilia and ranch furnishings from the storied Caribou Ranch.

Caribou Ranch was a recording studio built in the Rocky Mountains by Grammy award-winning musician and producer James William Guercio. During its tenure, the studio hosted over 178 musicians and produced 45 top ten albums, 18 Grammy's and 20 number-one Billboard Hits.

Caribou Ranch is being inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame in 2015 along with Joe Walsh & Barnstorm and Dan Fogelberg. Featuring over 400 lots, the auction and public exhibition will be held at the Denver Design Center and includes studio instruments, memorabilia and ranch furnishings.

Highlights include a Steinway & Sons grand piano, circa 1910, used while recording 'Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me' from Elton John's 1974 Caribou album. This album was recorded at and named after the studio where his next two albums would also be recorded. A Burton acoustic left on the ranch by a visiting Willie Nelson is available. Another highlight is the Wm. Knabe & Co. baby grand piano, which was played by Elton John, Billy Joel, Michael Jackson, Frank Zappa and countless others. This is the primary piano on which Elton John wrote Rock of the Westies. It was pictured with Michael Jackson in a 2014 Rolling Stone special edition.

Michael at the Caribou Ranch in Denver, Colorado (1984)

James William Guercio, owner of Caribou Ranch, with Michael Jackson who visited the ranch during The Jacksons Victory Tour in 1984. Similar branded clothing will be available in the auction including a blue hooded parka worn by Jackson while on the ranch.

Included is a Hammond B3 organ with the sound of rare and unique Leslie cabinet speakers, used by nearly every artist who recorded at Caribou; a Gibson Thunderbird bass played by Terry Kath of Chicago; and the sleek black Bosendorfer grand piano heard on many of the jazz albums recorded by artists such as Chick Corea and Al Di Meola. From Mr. Guercio's private collection is a 1985 Black Chevrolet Corvette with personalized Caribou plates.

'Rocky Mountain Way'' was the first hit recorded on the ranch, and soon after word got out that Mr. Guercio had created a state of the art recording studio away from big city distractions. As the first destination recording studio, music history was made by illustrious artists and groups such as Elton John, Stephen Stills, Billy Joel, Chicago, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Beach Boys, Michael Jackson, Johnny Cash, Rod Stewart, Frank Zappa, Jerry Lee Lewis, Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty, U2 and many more.

"Our life on Caribou Ranch was wonderful and memorable, but the ranch has new owners now, and we have moved on to our next Caribou adventure," said James W. Guercio. "We felt it was time to share with the fans some of the memories and stories that remain from that magical time."

A portion of the proceeds will go to The Colorado Music Hall of Fame, a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization (EIN 27-2529106) founded in 2011 to honor those individuals who have come to define the state's amazing and diverse musical legacy.

Tito Jackson“I Miss Him Every Moment Of The Day”. 18-12-'14

It’s more than five years since Michael Jackson died, but the music he and his brothers made lives on in the form of a stage show spectacular.

The late, great king of pop gave his tick of approval for the celebration to be created – and now after a six year stellar run in London’s West End it’s happening here in Australia.

Entertainment editor Richard Wilkins spoke to original member of the Jackson 5 and the Jacksons, Tito Jackson, about Thriller LIVE and his brother’s legacy.

“I love my brother, I miss him every moment of the day, if there was anything I could do to have him back I would but life is life if I could bring him back I would, but life is life.

“He had so much more to give the world, I just wish he was here to give it,” he said.

On the musical, Tito said he is proud to have created music with “longevity that lives on into people’s lives, [enjoying us] doing what we love, and that’s entertaining.”

“This is as close as you’re going to get to see what the original Jackson 5 were like with Michael Jackson,” he said.

Check out the tour dates for Thriller Live here.
