Donny Osmond Remembers His Last Conversation With Michael Jackson. 15-01-'15

Donny OsmondIn a HuffPost Live interview Wednesday, Donny Osmond looked back on his longtime friendship with the undisputed King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

“Back in the early ’70s it was the Jacksons and the Osmonds. It was Michael and Donny. We were kind of, like, parallel,” the 57-year-old singer told host Nancy Redd.

The two came from large families, both born as the seventh children in families of nine. Their mothers’ even share the same birthday, he added.

Osmond recounted one of the many conversations the two had before Jackson’s death in 2009. Their last chat, about a year before Jackson’s death, may have been the most indicative of how the lives of both stars had changed so dramatically throughout the years.

“He said, ‘Please don’t tell anybody, but I rented one of those big custom buses, those touring buses, and I took my kids. We’re hiding in Phoenix right now.’ Hiding from the press because everything had hit the fan,” Osmond said.

Osmond was quick to offer a few words of advice to Jackson.

“And I said, ‘Why don’t you do me a favor, Mike. You’re a nine-hour drive from my home in Utah. Bring your kids. No one will know you’re here. They’ll swim in the swimming pool. Have a little normalcy in your life’,” he said.

But the trip to Utah never panned out.

“And he said, ‘You know what Donny, I think I’m going to do that.’ And he never did,” Osmond said.

Under Layers Of Fakeouts, 'Happy Birthday Lisa' Is Unmistakably The Work Of Michael Jackson. 15-01-'15

In Hear This, A.V. Club writers sing the praises of songs they know well. As part of Simpsons Week, we’re picking our favorite songs from the show.

'Happy Birthday Lisa' (1991)

Considering Michael Jackson’s affinity for and association with Peter Pan, it makes sense that he’d be a Bart Simpson fan, too. As America’s preeminent 28-year-old fourth grader, Bart is another Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up; unlike Peter Pan, the King Of Pop eventually got to visit Bart and his fictional world. He even wrote a song with the character—his second contribution to the Simpsons catalog after the No. 1 novelty hit 'Do The Bartman.' Though, at the time, Jackson couldn’t cop to his participation in either recording.

The story of “Stark Raving Dad”’s production is one of the more bizarre passages in Simpsons history, marked by the secrecy surrounding Jackson’s appearance as Leon Kompowsky, the hulking patient of a Springfield mental institution who happens to speak and sing in the voice of… Michael Jackson. Well, he almost sings in the voice of Michael Jackson: As a stipulation of Jackson’s guest appearance, Leon’s singing was provided by soundalike Kipp Lennon.

The musician told producers he wanted to keep his brothers guessing as to whether or not he’d actually recorded Leon’s singing parts; the pseudonymous credit “John Jay Smith” did the trick for the non-Jacksons in the audience. It was the final time a Simpsons guest would appear on the show under an assumed name; Neil Patrick Harris and Joe Mantegna (in the dual role of Fat Tony and “Joe Mantegna as Fat Tony”) used their real names just three episodes later in 'Bart The Murderer.'

Happy Birthday Lisa

But no amount of behind-the-scenes shell games can disguise the fact that 'Lisa It’s Your Birthday' is a Michael Jackson composition. Jackson’s pure pop genius and unrepentant sentimentality are in full effect, though Leon and Bart’s final work omits any of the singer’s signature vocal flourishes. (In one of the episode’s finest moments of self-parody, Bart chides Leon for adding a “hee hee hee” to their song’s first draft: “You’re just putting that in because it’s commercial.”)

In its piano-and-bongoes arrangement, 'Lisa It’s Your Birthday' resembles nothing less than the gorgeously skeletal demo for the posthumously released Jackson track 'Love Never Felt So Good,' its elementary licks belying the fine craftsmanship at work. It’s a gentle little number, in line with the sonic gentleness Jackson’s voice lends to an episode in which Homer’s pink dress shirt gets him labeled a “free-thinking anarchist.” The strongest testament to the song’s quality, however, arrives during the closing moments of “Stark Raving Dad”: 'Happy Birthday Lisa' is just as catchy in Leon’s “true” voice, a gruff, working-class “New Joisy” patois courtesy of Hank Azaria.

James SafechuckMichael Jackson Accuser Gets Extension In Court Case. 14-01-'15

Even though Michael Jackson isn’t with us anymore, it appears that his name and his alleged deeds just can’t stay out of court.

36-year-old James Safechuck originally came out in August of 2014 and accused Jackson of sexually abusing him when he was a child. The accusations came after another former Jackson acquaintance made accusations against Jackson in May of 2013. Wade Robson, the former choreographer, began a legal battle with Jackson and his estate asking for money in reparation for the damages he incurred from the abuse from Jackson. Safechuck didn’t come forward until 2014, and there was talk that it was too late.

The lawyers for the Jackson estate argued that Safechuck had 60 days from when Robson went public to file his own claim. It was far more than 60 days, though, before he filed anything.

Safechuck and his lawyers fought, though. Their argument was that it wasn’t until Robson’s confession that Safechuck decided to seek psychological help. It was getting that help that made it apparent to him that he had been sexually abused by Jackson. According to the Brentwood Patch, Safechuck’s lawyers have stated that he isn’t bound by the original 60 day limit because Safechuck “did not fully comprehend what happened until he underwent counseling.”

My News LA added that Safechuck’s lawyers claim that Jackson “brainwashed” him and made Safechuck think that they were “acts of love and instigated by James himself.”

Safechuck and his lawyers allege that Jackson molested him approximately 100 times over the course of four years.

Los Angeles Supreme Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff was the one to give judgement on whether or not Safechuck would be able to pursue a case against Jackson and his estate. It was Beckloff’s decision to allow the latest Jackson accuser “an amended complaint to be filed on behalf of James Safechuck that further explains how Jackson’s actions allegedly misled the plaintiff to a point where he was unable to immediately understand what was happening to him.”

Safechuck originally met Jackson on the set for their late 1980’s commercial for the popular soft drink, Pepsi. He was only 10-years-old at the time.

Although there are many fans of the King of Pop out there who might say that Safechuck and even Robson are doing this just for the money, these aren’t the only instances of Jackson being accused of sexual abuse.

In a 2013 report by the New York Daily News, before Safechuck came forward, there were 24 boys who had come forward to accuse Jackson. They reported that Jackson spent “nearly $35 million in a desperate bid to cover up his crimes.”

Whether you believe him or not, it appears that James Safechuck will get another chance to pursue his case against the late Michael Jackson.

Michael Jackson's Estate Demands MSNBC Ax Conrad Murray Documentary. 14-01-'15

The Estate Of Michael JacksonExecutors for the estate of Michael Jackson demanded that MSNBC drop its plan to air a "reprehensible" documentary that promises a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the singer's relationship with Dr. Conrad Murray, but which they charged smears the late pop icon.

In a letter to MSNBC President Phil Griffin and the cable channel's corporate overseers, the Jackson representatives argued that Murray, convicted Monday of involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's death, uses the documentary "to shift the blame post-conviction to Michael Jackson, even though a jury considered the evidence and rejected this very argument."

MSNBC purchased "Michael Jackson and the Doctor: A Fatal Friendship" from a British production company and plans to air it Friday and Monday night, along with an "exclusive" interview with Murray by NBC News correspondent Savannah Guthrie.

A Los Angeles Superior Court jury convicted Murray for administering propofol, a surgical anesthetic, to Jackson and then failing to monitor the pop star as he stopped breathing.

MSNBC representatives had said earlier that the cable channel did not pay for access to Murray or contribute to his legal defense.

The producer of the documentary, October Films, said it paid only $1 for two years of access to Murray and a behind-the-scenes look at his legal defense.

Representatives of MSNBC and October Films said they did not know what arrangements might have been made by the film's distributor, Zodiak Rights. Zodiak representatives could not be reached.

The Jackson family representatives questioned whether additional payments were made to Murray.

"Was it really only $1, or was it more?" said a letter from John Branca and John McClain, who are co-executors of the Michael Jackson estate.

MSNBC did not immediately respond to the demand to cancel the airing of the documentary.

Ben Single CoverMichael Jackson Hit Meant For Donny Osmond? 13-01-'15

Michael Jackson recorded a hit that was originally meant for Donny Osmond, and Donny Osmond got a hit with a song that was originally meant for Michael and his famous brothers, the Jackson Five. It’s funny how things work out some times, isn’t it?

Although it’s not the one we normally think of as being one of Michael Jackson’s top hits like 'Thriller' or 'Beat It', Jackson hit number one in 1972 when he recorded 'Ben'' Jackson even won a Golden Globe for best song in 1972 and was nominated for an Academy Award. But Donny Osmond recently revealed that the hit song was meant for him and not Jackson!

Osmond revealed in an interview with the Huffington Post that the song about a rat was written for the wholesome teen star, but according to Osmond, he “was on tour, and they had to finish the movie.”

'Ben' was written to be included in the soundtrack to the horror movie Willard about a social outcast who’s tormented by those around him and whose only friends are rats. The soundtrack needed to be finished and since Osmond was unavailable, the 14-year-old Michael Jackson took his spot.

According to the Examiner, Jackson admitted years later that he only needed one take to cut 'Ben,' an especially impressive feat for such a young performer, surprising even himself.

So how does Osmond feel about Jackson getting what should have been his number one hit?

Osmond keeps things in perspective, saying “It wasn’t meant to be [for me].”

Osmond also shared that he had a number one hit around the same time called, 'Puppy Love,' and that he and Jackson spent many a time “laughing about the fact that I had a hit about a puppy and he had a hit about a rat.”

What’s more is the Osmonds found a hit when they recorded 'One Bad Apple,' which Jackson told Donny was originally meant for him and his brothers!

It all turned out for the best, though, with both performers having plenty of hits in their careers.

Osmond has admitted that he’d rather “sing about a puppy” but that “after 40 some-odd years, I finally recorded the song that was written for me.”

Osmond has recorded the Jackson hit and released 'Ben' on his latest album 'The Soundtrack Of My Life', which is out today.

This will be the 60th album for Osmond. Hopefully, Osmond can find the same success with it that Michael Jackson did.

Sony Has No Plans To Sell Music Publishing Business, Lynton Says. 10-01-'15

Michael LyntonSony Corp. (6758) has no plans to sell the music publishing business that controls rights to songs from the Beatles and Taylor Swift, as was suggested by leaked e-mails, Sony Entertainment Chief Executive Officer Michael Lynton said.

Sony’s music-publishing business, the largest in the world, has a catalog of more than 2 million songs. Music publishers collect songwriting royalties from album sales, use on TV and other performances.

E-mails and documents released in the cyber-attack on Sony mentioned a “top secret” plan to sell the music publishing business because it had few growth prospects, Bloomberg News reported last month. Top management at Tokyo-based Sony was concerned about the complex ownership and governance of the business.

In an Jan. 8 interview, Lynton said a sale isn’t under consideration.

Music publishing accounts for 14 percent of Sony’s music revenue, with recorded music generating the larger part. The business includes Sony/ATV Music Publishing, a joint venture with the estate of Michael Jackson, and EMI Music Publishing, in which Sony has a 30 percent stake.

Sony/ATV CEO Martin Bandier said in a memo to staff on Jan. 9 that he’s been advised by Sony Corp. that the venture isn’t for sale, the New York Post reported.

Sony/ATV was established in 1995 in partnership with Jackson, who had acquired rights to the Beatles songs a decade earlier.

Michael Jackson Vintage Parka And ATV From Caribou Ranch® To Be Auctioned By Leslie Hindman Auctioneers. 09-01-'15

On January 24, 2015 Leslie Hindman Auctioneers will conduct the sale of property from the historic Caribou Ranch to include Michael Jackson memorabilia.

Caribou Ranch was a recording studio in the Rocky Mountains that produced 45 top ten albums, 18 Grammy's and 20 number-one Billboard Hits. The ranch hosted over 150 music legends, including Michael Jackson, during the 70's and 80's.

Jackson visited the ranch during The Jacksons' Victory Tour that played across the United States and Canada in 1984. When playing in Denver, Michael Jackson took a break and headed to Nederland, Colorado to enjoy life at Caribou Ranch.

During his stay, Jackson took part in the many outdoor activities available at the ranch. This included exploring the scenery on an all-terrain vehicle. He wore a plush blue parka and was photographed using both. Images from his trip appeared in the November/December 1984 issue of People Weekly Extra.

"He rehearsed every day that he was at the ranch. He had a strenuous exercise program, a personal chef and was in top form. He was not used to being able to go outside without bodyguards. It was a freedom for him that he was unaccustomed to at that stage of his career," said James Guercio, Caribou's founder.

These are two of over 400 lots that will be sold in the upcoming auction conducted by Leslie Hindman Auctioneers on January 24 at the Denver Design Center. Online bidding allows music fans from around the world access to the instruments, equipment and furnishings used by similar big names while visiting or recording at Caribou Ranch.

Andrae Crouch, Who Worked With Pop Stars, Dies In Los Angeles At 72. 09-01-'15

Andrae CrouchAndrae Crouch, a legendary gospel performer, songwriter and choir director whose work graced songs by Michael Jackson and Madonna and movies such as "The Lion King," has died. He was 72.

His publicist says Crouch died Thursday at a hospital in Los Angeles, where he was admitted Saturday after suffering a heart attack.

In a career that spanned more than half a century, Crouch wrote dozens of songs, including gospel favorites such as "The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power" and "Soon and Very Soon," which was sung at a public memorial to Jackson.

He helped pioneer the "Jesus Music" movement in the late 1960s and '70s that started the spread of contemporary Christian music.

But his influence also was felt in pop music. Elvis Presley and Paul Simon performed his songs. He helped arrange the Jackson song "Man in the Mirror," and his arrangement for the film "The Color Purple" earned an Oscar nomination.

Forgotten Concerts: Michael Jackson With The Jacksons At Springfield Civic Center On October 28, 1979. 08-01-'15

The Jacksons World TourBy the time The Jacksons' 'Destiny Tour' reached the City of Homes, baby brother Michael's star was on the rise.

The tour had kicked off in January 1979 as a means to promote the brothers' million-selling 'Destiny' album. But in the summer of 1979, Michael Jackson achieved solo success with 'Off The Wall,' which featured the hit single 'Rock With You.'

When The Jacksons played the Springfield Civic Center on Oct. 28, 1979, the set list was retooled to reflect Michael's solo success.

As a result, fans got to hear Jackson 5 classics like 'I'll Be There', 'ABC' and 'Dancing Machine,' their recent hit 'Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)' co-written by Michael and brother Randy; and solo songs including 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough.'

At $8.75 a ticket – $7.75 if bought in advance – fans easily got their money's worth.

The Jacksons had arrived in Springfield after playing back-to-back gigs in Syracuse and Buffalo.

The siblings were honored by the city during their brief visit with a proclamation from the Dimauro administration honoring their musical accomplishments.

The Jackson would continue to record as a group and Michael Jackson would reach new heights in December 1982 with the release of 'Thriller.'

Judge Gives Jackson Molestation Accuser More Time To Make Case. 06-01-'15

James SafechuckA judge is giving lawyers for a man who alleges he was sexually abused as a child by Michael Jackson more time to show why their client should be allowed to file a late claim against the singer’s estate.

A judge will allow a 36-year-old man suing Michael Jackson's estate over allegations of sex abuse more time to show why he waited to file.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff ruled December 30th, 2014 that he would allow an amended complaint to be filed on behalf of James Safechuck that further explains how Jackson’s actions allegedly misled the plaintiff to a point where he was unable to immediately understand what was happening to him.

Beckloff heard arguments from attorneys December 16th, 2014 and took the issues under submission. He gave Safechuck’s lawyers three weeks to file the revised lawsuit.

Safechuck did not file his petition for a late claim against the Jackson estate until August. Attorneys for the estate maintain Safechuck had 60 days to file the claim after he began to understand what allegedly happened to him after seeing a May 2013 television interview with Wayne Robson, who also claims he was sexually abused by Jackson as a child.

Safechuck’s attorneys maintain he did not fully comprehend what happened until he underwent counseling and therefore is not bound by the 60-day statute.

Safechuck, 36, alleges he was abused by the King of Pop after the two appeared together in a late-1980s Pepsi commercial, when Safechuck was 10.

”(Jackson) engaged in a calculated course of conduct to lure both (Safechuck) and his parents into a false sense of security and normalcy that was far from reality,” Safechuck’s attorneys allege in the court papers.

They claim Jackson “was successful in his efforts to the point that (Safechuck) endured repeated acts of sexual abuse of a heinous nature and was brainwashed by the decedent into believing they were acts of love and instigated by James himself rather than the decedent.”

Safechuck alleges the pop star molested him about 100 times for four years until he reached puberty.

Last year, the 31-year-old Robson, an Australian former-choreographer, also filed a petition for a late claim against the estate, alleging Jackson sexually abused him at a young age.

According to Safechuck’s attorneys’ court papers, their client was able to gain “insight” from Robson’s claim and then obtained psychiatric help that has allowed him to come forward with details of the “loathsome nature of his childhood sexual relationship with (Jackson), the effects of which he has buried for decades.”

Jackson died June 25, 2009, at age 50 of acute propofol intoxication.

Michael Jackson's Son Prince Reportedly Making Music With Justin Bieber. 05-01-'15

It looks like Prince Jackson will be following in his father's footsteps. According to a new report by Page Six, the 17-year-old son of the late King of Pop Michael Jackson has been working on his music with new pal Justin Bieber.

A Jackson family source told the site that Jackson and Bieber "really dig one another" and that their "major recording album" was in the works. No other details regarding the project have been revealed, but the source added that professional boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr. had been supporting the project.

Prince Jackson and Justin Bieber

In addition to making music, Jackson and Bieber who live in the same Calabasas, California community have reportedly been hanging out together a lot. The source said that Jackson often copied the troubled superstar's lifestyle and even made Mayweather Jr. his mentor.

With a $66,000 monthly allowance he receives from his father's estate, Jackson rarely stays at home with grandmother Katherine. He has been hitting Hollywood clubs, dating several different girls and disregarding his guardians. He also loves spending his time window shopping for luxurious items. "He's looking at high-end cars like a Mercedes Maybach, a Rolls-Royce and Range Rovers and he's buying expensive jewelry," the source added.

Berry GordyBerry Gordy On Taking Motown To Broadway. 04-01-'15

When Berry Gordy talks about the legendary record company he started in Detroit back in 1959 (originally Tamla Records, it became the Motown Record Corp. in 1960), he describes an entity transcending music. "My Motown is like a tree," he says with relish. "We go out on branches in every different direction."

The sounds and sights of Smokey Robinson's Miracles, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, the young Michael Jackson, the Temptations, the Four Tops, and Diana Ross (Gordy's onetime, longtime paramour) with and without the Supremes made Motown a force of nature in entertainment circles. Since its first hits - many featuring Gordy songwriting credits - the African American label was what it claimed to be: "the sound of young America." On Tuesday, its offspring, Motown the Musical, begins a two-week engagement at the Academy of Music.

"When I started this, people asked how was I going to Broadway-ize Motown," says the 85-year-old music mogul, who sold his shares in the label in 1988. "I said instead that I'm going to Motown-ize Broadway."

Michael Jackson’s Kids Hit Bahamas For The Holidays. 02-01-'15

Michael Jackson’s three children traveled to the Bahamas for the holidays, while their guardian and grandma Katherine Jackson stayed behind in California, according to RadarOnline.

Paris Jackson came home from the Utah boarding school where she was sent after a 2013 suicide attempt to spend the holidays with brothers Prince Jackson and Blanket Jackson, insiders said. But the children’s Christmas celebration was low key since their grandmother, a Jehovah’s Witness church member, does not observe holidays for religious reasons.

Sixteen-year-old Paris, 17-year-old Prince and 12-year-old Blanket traveled to Atlantis Paradise Island with their co-guardian and cousin T.J. Jackson.

T.J.’s brothers Jermajesty and Jaafar Jackson — all three sons of uncle Jermaine Jackson — also tagged along for the beach vacation, according to sources. The family returned to Los Angeles Tuesday.

While Paris and Prince’s biological mom Debbie Rowe posted a photo of her two children on Facebook Monday — tagging it “Babies” — she was not in the picture. She posted a photo of her with Paris during Christmas 2013.
