Off The Wall Cover Art'Off The Wall' 2016: Creating The Cover Art. 28-02-'16

In early summer 2015, I started working on the cover art for the new Michael Jackson CD 'Off The Wall'. I thought I would share some of my early sketches and rough ideas along with the final sketch that was used. The concept was to create Michael’s iconic pose as if it was drawn in chalk or paint on a brick wall. The drawing had to be original looking, compliment the entire CD package, and not clash with the chalk text that was so well known to fans. Here’s some of the early drawings I was experimenting with…

I’ve finally hit on the style! After hundreds of rough sketches I realize the lines must have an overlapping effect. This gives me the look I’ve been trying to get with a spontaneous chalk drawing that will look like a finished logo of MJ and also compliment the cover text. Clean and simple, these stylish lines will reproduce great over the brick texture…

Here it is, the final drawing! This is the actual final chalk drawing that was used for the cover of 'Off The Wall'. After trying hundreds of sketches, this was the one that was picked by The Estate and SONY. I cleaned the edges and made some minor changes to a few of the smaller lines and scanned a high resolution that was used in reverse white on the cover.

Motown: The Sound Of Young America Book Cover'Motown: The Sound Of Young America' Book. 27-02-'16

The book 'Motown: The Sound of Young America' will be released on March 1st by publisher Thames & Hudson Ltd.

Hot on the heels of a new West End musical, a brilliant new book – featuring rare images of The Jackson 5, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder and more – joyously evokes the sights and sounds of that...

'I wanted to sell all music to all people: whites, blacks, Jews, gentiles, cops and robbers,’ says songwriter and former amateur boxer Berry Gordy who, aged just 29, launched his own record company in January 1959 with $800 from his family’s savings fund.

Yet by the mid-Sixties, Motown was on its way to becoming America’s largest black-owned business, with a stable of artists including The Miracles, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Martha & the Vandellas, The Four Tops and The Supremes.

Gordy was renowned for the strict work ethic he brought to Motown, evolving a musical production line that mirrored the Detroit car factories in which he had once worked.

Across the front of the record company’s first building was painted a simple declaration: ‘Hitsville USA’.

Motown’s music-makers were taught that a record must seize attention.

Gordy even conducted focus groups of teenagers to ask if they would buy a particular Motown 45 or a hot dog.

Championed by The Beatles and Dusty Springfield, Motown became a sensation in the Sixties and grew through the Seventies and Eighties, as its stars were joined by The Jackson 5, Lionel Richie and Rick James.

Their astonishing stories, alongside these rare photos from the Motown archive, have been collected in a definitive new book which reveals the epic struggle to establish this revolutionary record label.

'Off The Wall' (Deluxe Softpak) [CD/DVD And CD/Blu-ray Set] Is Released. 26-02-'16

Off The Wall (Deluxe Softpak) [CD/Blu-ray Set] CoverThe 'Off The Wall' CD/DVD and CD/Blu-ray (deluxe softpak) is released in the EU during Black History Month.

The package will include the original version of the album 'Off The Wall' bundled with the new documentary 'Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off The Wall' on DVD/Blu-ray, directed by Spike Lee and a 16-page booklet. A chalk to create your own art on the specially treated brick wall on the inside of the package.

The Album:
'Off The Wall' is the fifth studio album by the American pop musician Michael Jackson, released on August 5th, 1979 in the USA by Epic Records, after Jackson's critically well received film performance in 'The Wiz'. While working on that project, Jackson and Quincy Jones had become friends, and Jones agreed to work with Jackson on his next studio album.

Written by Michael Jackson, the first single from 'Off The Wall', 'Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough', was Michael’s first Grammy and first single to hit #1 in the U.S. and internationally as a solo artist. With the singles 'Rock With You', 'Off The Wall' and 'She’s Out Of My Life' Jackson became the first solo artist in history to have four singles from the same album peak inside the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.

The importance of Michael Jackson’s 'Off The Wall' cannot be overstated. Recorded when he was just 20 years old, the album heralded Michael’s stunning emancipation as a singular musical force and creative visionary.

It smashed the ceiling on record sales for black artists, ushering in an exciting new era of R&B-to-pop crossover airplay, chart, marketing and sales trends not seen before in modern pop music. It’s the record that “invented modern pop as we know it,” wrote Rolling Stone. For fellow black artists of the day, Michael served as an illuminating inspiration.

The album was an enormous commercial success; as of 2014 it is certified eight times platinum in the United States and has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time.

A look at a chapter of his career that is rarely examined, 'Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off The Wall' allows audiences to travel with Michael as he gets his start at Motown, strikes a new path with CBS Records, and forges a relationship with legendary producer Quincy Jones.

An illuminated portrait emerges of how an earnest, passionate, hard-working boy would become the “King of Pop.”

Michael Jackson Estate -- Goes After Popcorn Website ... You're Not The King of Pop! 26-02-'16

Nobody calls popcorn "pop" ... is the basis of a lawsuit the Michael Jackson estate has filed against a website using MJ's name to hawk popcorn.

MJ's estate has set its sights on KingOfPop.com ... a website that popped up in 2012 after buying the domain name of a former Michael Jackson fan website.

The estate claims the site tried to defend its use of the popular MJ moniker by saying the word "pop" is a "nickname for popcorn products." The estate says that's BS because "pop" is only a nickname for soda ... in certain parts of the country.

Team MJ is suing to get the site shut down, plus damages. Shoulda gone for a couple tins of Chocolate Dreams Popcorn too. Yummm ...

Quincy JonesQuincy Jones Lawsuit Over Jackson Hits Can Proceed. 25-02-'16

A judge says Quincy Jones' lawsuit against Michael Jackson's estate over royalties on some of the singer's biggest hits should go to trial.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Stern ruled Thursday that there were numerous factual disputes about whether the hit-making producer is owed any money is an issue for a jury to decide.

Jones sued Jackson's estate and Sony Music Entertainment in October 2013, seeking at least $10 million. Jones contends the entities re-edited songs for the 'This Is It' film and a pair of Cirque du Soleil shows to deprive him of royalties and production fees.

Jackson's estate, which denies wrongdoing, sought to dismiss the case.

New versions of 'Billie Jean' and 'Thriller' are among the songs at issue.

Popularity of Jackson's music soared after his death in 2009.

Jackson's $1.5M 'Gone With The Wind' Oscar Is Missing. 24-02-'16

The pop test star paid a record price for the statuette, but his estate can't figure out what happened to it.

This story first appeared in the March 4 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

When Michael Jackson died unexpectedly in 2009 at age 50, the executors of his estate began taking inventory of the mountains of valuable (and often bizarre) assets the entertainer had left behind. But one prized Jackson possession eluded their investigation: the best picture Oscar awarded to legendary producer David O. Selznick for the 1939 classic 'Gone With The Wind'.

Jackson, a movie buff throughout his life, had purchased the Academy Award in 1999, paying $1.54 million in a Sotheby's auction (the 1940 Oscar was awarded before there were rules against selling them), still the most ever shelled out for a golden statuette. (Before the auction, the sellers had estimated its worth at a mere $300,000.)

Gone with the Wind Oscar
Michael Jackson bought the Oscar awarded in 1940 to Selznick (left) for producing 'Gone With The Wind'.

Jackson is presumed to have kept the Oscar at either his Neverland estate near Ojai, Calif., or at the Los Angeles home where he was living when he died. But the Oscar was not found among his belongings, according to the estate. A Jackson family member might have absconded with the trophy, it might simply be hidden and unaccounted for in a storage facility with other possessions, or it might have been stolen during the commotion surrounding his death. Regardless, if it does show up, Jackson's executors will be waiting to reclaim it.

"The estate does not know where the 'Gone With The Wind' statuette is," Jackson attorney Howard Weitzman tells THR. "We would like to have that Oscar because it belongs to Michael's children. I'm hopeful it will turn up at some point."

Navi GoldExperience A Night With Navi Gold In The Legend Continues. 24-02-'16

The Legend Continues, starring the incredible Navi, is the world's number one Michael Jackson tribute show and even got a standing ovation from the man himself.

Michael Jackson may no longer be with us, but his legacy lives on and now you can experience the unbelievable energy of one of his live shows. King of Pop – The Legend Continues is set to take St David’s Hall by storm on Friday, March 4, for one night only.

The cast is led by the incredible impersonator Navi, who is undoubtedly the leading and most successful Michael Jackson tribute artist on the planet. This claim is backed up by his endless list of achievements across a glittering career spanning over two decades and shows in 57 countries.

Unquestionably, the biggest highlight came in 2003 when Navi was invited to perform at Michael Jackson’s 45th birthday party in Los Angeles. And the real King of Pop loved every minute of it – giving the performance two thumbs up. An even bigger moment was to follow the next day when he was invited to Neverland where he had a tour of Jackson’s home, theme park, zoo and cinema followed by a barbecue.

Their friendship continued and Navi was frequently hand-picked by Jackson to work for him. This included even coming out of hotels as a decoy to distract waiting fans and press whilst the real Michael Jackson quietly slipped out the back exit. He was also hired for promotions of forthcoming tours and album launches.

Plus, Navi has even spent thousands of pounds rebuilding his face to become the spitting image of his hero. It’s with very good reason that he’s widely considered the most authentic Michael Jackson tribute around.

This show also features a superbly choreographed live band and dancers, who assist Navi in perfectly recreating all the classics from the early Jackson 5 tunes to huge hits including 'Thriller', 'Billie Jean' and 'Smooth Criminal'. Experience the only Michael Jackson tribute show officially endorsed by the King of Pop himself at St David’s Hall.

'I Will Be Magic' Michael Jackson's Secret Letters Unearthed In BBC Documentary. 21-02-'16

A SECRET letter written by Michael Jackson, promising to re-invent himself as the greatest entertainer of all time, has been unveiled in a new documentary.

In the letter, the singer talks about changing himself from his Jackson 5 days and says he wants a “whole new look” and “should be a totally different person”.

The handwritten note to himself was penned the same year he released his debut studio solo album 'Off The Wall' in 1979.

Earlier he had reached the top of the charts singing alongside his brothers.

The letter features in the documentary 'Michael Jackson’s Journey From Motown To Off The Wall', directed by acclaimed film maker Spike Lee, which will be shown on BBC Two on Saturday March 12.

MJ Manifesto Penned
The most personal item we found in a vast warehouse of Michael Jackson's belongings was a document -- a handwritten master plan by a 21-year-old MJ.

In it the performer writes: “MJ will be my new name. No more Michael Jackson.

“I want a whole new character, a whole new look. I should be a totally different person.

“People should never think of me as the kid who sang 'ABC', 'I Want You Back'. I should be a new incredible actor, singer, dancer that will shock the world.

“I will do no interviews, I will be magic, I will be a perfectionist, a researcher, a trainer, a master. I will be better than every great actor roped in one. I must have the most incredible training system. To dig and dig and dig until I find. I will study and look back on the whole world of entertainment and perfect it. Take it steps further than where the greatest left off.”

The letter, dated November 6, 1979, was written while he completed the Destiny tour with his brothers and its contents form part of the film, which is also available as part of an exclusive new edition of 'Off The Wall' which will be released later this week.

The film captures the story of the child star who went on to be the self-proclaimed king of pop, dying aged 50 in 2009.

The story also features interviews with his parents, brothers, and fellow musicians as well as archive footage of dancers Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly and Rat Pack star Sammy Davis Junior speaking about the young Michael Jackson learning from their styles.

Jackson ended up being as good as his word, becoming the world’s biggest pop star by the time of his second solo album, 'Thriller'.

With up to 110 million copies sold, it remains the best-selling album of all time and won eight Grammy awards.

His other albums, including 'Off The Wall', 'Bad' and 'Dangerous', also sold millions of copies.

Jackson also famously changed his appearance dramatically in the ’80s, fuelling rumours of extensive cosmetic surgery.

His skin tone became lighter and the singer revealed he had been diagnosed with skin disorder vitiligo.

Majestik Magnificent Loses Cancer Battle. 19-02-'16

Majestik Magnificent, late Michael Jackson‘s personal magician, lost his battle to cancer at 3:05 a.m. this morning, RadarOnline.com has learned exclusively.

In recent months, MJ’s mother Katherine Jackson had forked over more than $1 million to help pay for Majestik’s medical bills as he battled against aggressive malignant brain cancer.

Last spring, sources told Radar that the 61-year-old, who also worked as Mohammed Ali’s personal magician, had an estimated four-six months left to live.

“He said he had a team of eight or nine specialists , and he’s actually living at Katherine’s compound,” one insider shared at the time. “She’s taking care of him. His medical bill so far was up to $1.6 million, and she’s picking up the tab for it.”

Katherine also arranged for Majestik to receive treatment at the Adventist Medical Center in Glendale, Calif., said the source.

Majestik Magnificent
Majestik first met the King of Pop in the 1990's, and later became one of the singer’s most avid supporters throughout his 2005 molestation trial, saying, “I know his character. He would not hurt a child.”

Jermaine Jackson Blasts Trump As A 'Fool' For Michael Jackson Comments. 19-02-'16

Jermaine JacksonThe brother of Michael Jackson has rebuked Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for referencing the late singer at a town hall Thursday, and speculating about his "loss of confidence."

Trump made the comments at a CNN town hall event, after being asked about his favorite music. Trump said Jackson was "a very good friend of mine."

"He was an unbelievably talented guy, he lost his confidence. He lost tremendous confidence because of, honestly bad, bad, bad surgery," Trump said. "He had the worst — He had people that did numbers on him that were just unbelievable, facially."

Jackson's brother, Jermaine Jackson, lashed out at Trump on Twitter Friday, accusing him of dropping the late singer's name to get votes.

"'Friends' don't pay tribute by peddling b.s. theories about Michael's 'loss in confidence'. This fool Trump needs to sit down," Jermaine Jackson said. "Michael's confidence was affected by the pressures, injustice and vitriol of external circumstances. Period."

Trump on CNN also called Jackson "an unbelievable talent" and "one of the truly most talented people."

With Michael Jackson's 'Off The Wall' getting the reissue treatment this year, Miguel took the stage on February 15 at the 2016 Grammy's to perform 'She's Out Of My Life', a classic ballad that peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Miguel was joined by a special accompanist for the performance: Greg Phillinganes, who was the song's original keyboardist. While Miguel crooned, video of MJ singing the song played behind him.

'Thriller Live' Brings The Memory Of Michael Jackson To Life At The Regent Theatre. 15-02-'16

Long-running, record-breaking West End concert spectacular, 'Thriller Live' came to The Regent Theatre stage with an updated version of the show, including new songs, videos, costumes and special FX from Thursday February 11 until Saturday February 13.

It's no wonder this show has broken records, it is absolutely incredible, and a glorious tribute to the undisputed King of Pop the late Michael Jackson.

The auditorium was packed out for this show, and deservedly so, the talent of the performers are out of this world, with some of the best singing and dancing I have ever seen or heard.

As we were guided through the performances of some of the greatest hits from Michael's' career as a member of his family's group The Jackson Five and his solo albums, accompanied by narration from some of the performers, I found a whole new love and admiration for Michael Jackson and his extraordinary talent as a performer, singer, dancer, entertainer and song writer.

Thriller Live
'Thriller Live' is a concert celebrating the music of The Jackson 5 and the solo work of Michael Jackson.

It was clear to see that each one of the performers was having the time of their life on that stage and filled with pride to be representing such an amazing talent, and it's no wonder, with his vast repertoire of hits, people call Michael Jackson one of the greatest entertainers there ever was.

But Michael was not only an incredible entertainer, he was an avid campaigner and humanitarian for the environment, equality and human rights, and my particular favourite performance of the night was 'Earth Song', when the singers and dancers completely captured and embodied the fierce, passionate spirit of the song and its powerful message.

The atmosphere was electric and the audience couldn't get enough of it and were literally dancing in the aisles, and after seeing this powerful production I realise the huge talent that the world has lost.

This production originally began as a celebration of his work and talent and sadly became more of a tribute after his untimely death in 2009.

It has became part of his legacy, and it's certainly a legacy to be extremely proud of.

On Wednesday December 16, at the 2901st performance at the Lyric Theatre, 'Thriller Live' will overtake Evita, which opened in 1978, to become the 17th Longest Running West End Musical of all time. It is testament to the enduring appeal of Michael Jackson and his music.

'Thriller Live', choreographed and directed by award-winning Gary Lloyd, was originally conceived and created by Adrian Grant, a long-time associate of Michael Jackson, and author of Michael Jackson – The Visual Documentary.

It is produced by Paul Walden and Derek Nicol for Flying Music in association with Adrian Grant for Key Concerts.

Producer Paul Walden said: "We are certainly not resting on our laurels - a brand new version of the show, with four new songs, a new opening, new production elements including new video, new costumes and special effects - is on a 10-month UK and international tour and premiered on Thursday October 8 in the West End, where the show continues to break West End records. With all these changes we aim to once again set the bar high in terms of what a West End audience will see, hear and experience."

The late “King of Pop” Michael Jackson won the presidential race at the mock polls staged by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Saturday.

The result was from only one of the areas (Robinson’s Place in Manila) selected by the election body to hold the mock polls. It is not yet known if Jackson also won in other areas as voting is allowed until 5 p.m.

Jackson garnered 20 votes against singer Justin Bieber’s ‎15 votes.

For Vice President, American singer Ariana Grande got the highest vote with 12 votes beating Alicia Keys and Avril Lavigne with a mere point.

For senator, the 12 international singers who received the most votes are Jennifer Lopez (40), Celine Dion (37), Bon Jovi (36), Christina Aguilera (34), Carly Rae Jepsen (31), David Cook (31), Beyoncé Knowles (29), Britney Spears (28), Elvis Presley (28), Craig David (28) and David Archuleta (28) and Demi Lovato (25).

Out of the 150 groups listed in the ballot as partylist representative, Air Supply emerged on top with 5 votes.

The Board of Election Inspectors (BEI) posted a copy of the results, right after the voting closed at 12 noon.

One of the voters, however, seemed unhappy with the result.

The voter said he would protest the win of Jackson convinced that his idol Bieber, won the elections eliciting laughter from those around him.
