The Estate Of Michael Jackson Celebrates 'HISTory 25' With... 30-05-'20

The Estate of Michael Jackson will release a brand new line of merchandise celebrating 'HIStory', the album.

The following statement from the MJ Online Team:

25 Years ago this coming month, Michael released one of the most forceful and impactful albums of his career – a double CD album which featured his greatest hits and all new material that addressed racial injustice, police brutality, false accusations, the tabloid media, climate change, and the need for us to take care of each other, among other themes. He called it 'HIStory – Past, Present, and Future Book I'. Originally, the album was scheduled for a 1994 holiday-season release. Michael declared that it wasn't ready, and delayed it until he had the exact album he wanted. After one of the most memorable marketing campaigns in history, the double CD album was released on June 15th, 1995 in the USA.

HIStory merchandise
The Estate of Michael Jackson is honoring and celebrating 'HIStory' with a T-shirt, hoodie, face mask and beanie.

Michael's messages on this album are as relevant today as ever. Although we all know that Michael's most autobiographical and, according to some, best album deserves a much bigger celebration, that is simply not possible given the current circumstances around the world.

The Estate of Michael Jackson is honoring and celebrating 'HIStory' with a series of new merchandise capsule collections featuring both the album as a whole as well as all of the singles released from HIStory. The first, designed for 'Scream/Childhood', which was released on May 29th, 1995, will be released at midnight tonight, eastern standard time. You can peruse and purchase from the collection here: https://www.shopmichaeljackson.com/store/

The first range is made of:
– T-shirt
– Hoodie
– Face Mask
– Beanie

with the imagery of the (maxi-single and not) single 'Scream'.

So expect the same range of products for all 'HIStory's' singles and maybe the album!

Michael Jackson Is In The Top 10 Of Best… Slot Machines. 28-05-'20

Michael Jackson has been voted in the top 10 of best music-themed Slot games of all time.

In the top 10 you will find Guns N' Roses, Motorhead, Kiss, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Lives and The Phantom of the Opera.

Michael is the only pop artist to have made it there as most of the music-theme popular slot machines are more rock based.

MJ Slot Machine
The Michael Jackson slots machine, developed by renowned manufacturer Bally is one of the most exciting slots game, and undoubtedly the best for all Michael Jackson fans.

Not that I want to push gambling as this will be wrong (and I don't understand the addiction to gambling LOL) but I would like to admit, as a fan, I have played once to those machines and it's so cool to see and hear Michael while introducing a $1!

OK! This does not bring anything to Michael's legacy but being in the top 10 most popular music-theme slot machines just proves that people enjoy his music! I don't see any Wade and James Slot Machines? Maybe a punching ball machine game would be nice (with their faces on it of course!).

Rodney JerkinsRodney Jerkins Talks Michael. 26-05-'20

On the variety.com website, they are currently featuring an article about music producer Rodney Jerkins. In the article, he discusses working with Michael on the 'Invincible' album.

"He challenged me to dig deeper," Jerkins said. He explained Michael told him to "Go to the junk yard and hit on things and make sounds."

Jerkins continues; "There were a lot of three and four a.m. phone calls. 'I need you to go to the studio for me.' I'd be super tired. I would play songs over the phone and he'd say, 'I need you to pan the hi-hats differently.' Genius. How did he hear that over the phone?"

Michael also had a way of testing those who worked with him, he said. "We were finishing the album and Michael wanted a song that could come out at Halloween. He had 'Thriller', he had 'Ghost' — he always wanted spooky songs. He loved the track for the song 'Threatened', only he said, 'It's missing Rod Sterling. I need Rod Sterling to rap on this.' At first I'm thinking, 'Is there some new rapper called Rod Sterling that I don't know about?' I said, 'Elaborate, Michael.' He said, 'You know Rod Sterling from 'The Twilight Zone'. "Five days later he says 'Did you get Rod Sterling to rap on it yet?' I said, 'Michael, Rod Sterling is dead.' He said, 'Yeah but I still need him to rap on it.'"

Jerkins managed to get copies of every 'Twilight Zone' episode, took apart Rod Sterling's voice-overs and built them back up again with the help of a rapper. "Michael comes back in the studio and again," explains Jerkin. "He says, 'Did you ever get Rod Sterling to rap?' I said 'As a matter of fact I did.' He looked at me as if to say, 'You're lying. There's no way. I was just playing around with you'' I pressed play and the joy that came on his face. It looked like he wanted to cry. He was so amazed that we got that done and that I took on that challenge and he loved it. It was sad it never came out as he had big plans for that song."

Smooth RadioMichael Dominates The Smooth Radio's All Time Top 500. 26-05-'20

Over the week-end, Smooth Radio, a UK Radio station, revealed the All Time Top 500 songs 2020 as voted for by listeners.

At the dawn of a 'certain movie', the Radio Station was quick to stop playing Michael's music, appeasing what they thought was demand from its listeners. However, the All Time Top 500 proved otherwise as 20 Michael Jackson songs appeared in the Top 500 with two songs in the Top 10. This marks a new peak for Michael since 2017, where his highest ranking then was 'Man In The Mirror' at N#17.

This year's list also included six new entries for Michael, demonstrating that demand to hear a more diverse range of Michael's music on the radio is ever increasing.

With 20 entries, Michael became the number one artist with the most solo entries. George Michael topped the list with 21 entries, however five inclusions were from his time with Wham!

Smooth Radio currently pulls in an average of four million listeners a week.

'Billie Jean' at N#7 and 'Man In The Mirror' at N#5 ensured Michael was one of only two artists (George Michael being the other) to achieve this result.

It is clear that the general public want to listen to Michael Jackson and we are hoping to hear more of his songs on Smooth Radio within the next couple of days!

Look here are the Top 500.

Rockin' Robin Single Cover'Rockin' Robin' Changing Hands. 15-05-'20

Reservoir, a New York based independent music rightsholder has acquired 16,000 copyrights songs by bringing Shapiro Bernstein into its portfolio.

What is that to do with MJ you might ask?

Shapiro Bernstein is holding the copyrights for one MJ song and multiple Jackson 5 songs: 'Rockin' Robin' (MJ), 'Little Bitty Pretty One', 'If You Want Heaven' and 'Someone's In My Love Light' are among them!

Shapiro Bernstein also have songs from The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Edith Piaf, Bob Dylan, Elton John and many more.

Shapiro Bernstein President Michael Brettler, the fourth-generation leader in the company's history, said: "Since the beginning, my family has built and overseen a catalog of incredibly special songs and legendary songwriters that has stood the test of time. It is with enormous pride that we have found a partner in Reservoir, another family-owned, independent company, for the next chapter of this legacy."

It is unclear how much Reservoir has paid for the acquisition or what they are planning to do with the rights of those songs. We might hear 'Rockin' Robin' in movies or adverts soon…

Michael Jackson Musical Delays Broadway Opening To Spring 2021. 13-05-'20

MJ Musical"MJ", the musical about the life and career of the late Michael Jackson, has pushed back its Broadway opening to spring of 2021. The move comes after the Great White Way extended its shutdown through Labor Day due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The show will now start preview performances on March 8, 2021, with an opening night scheduled for April 15 at Neil Simon Theatre. "MJ" was initially set to premiere on July 6, 2020.

Ticket buyers will immediately receive a refund for the performance.

Ephraim Sykes, who nabbed a Tony for 'Ain't Too Proud', will portray Jackson in the musical. "MJ" will feature classic Jackson songs like 'Beat It', 'Billie Jean', 'The Way You Make Me Feel', and 'Smooth Criminal'. The show was originally named 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough', but was changed to "MJ".

The Long Journey To Glory Book Cover 'The Long Journey To Glory' Book Is Released. 12-05-'20

'The Long Journey To Glory: My Side Of The Jacksons' Story' from Page Publishing author Reynaud D. Jones is a personal account of how an enterprising African American youth taught himself to play the guitar, organize singing groups, show bands, and promote talent. It is the story of his constant struggle and personal desire to break free of cultural chains and find his rightful place in history amid his need with the constant fear of betraying his spiritual ethos.

'The Long Journey To Glory My Side Of The Jacksons' Story' seeks to finally set the record straight as to who discovered Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5. The book describes the truth about the real beginning of the Jackson singing group and Michael and their climb to fame. It will include the story of the Jacksons, from the family's very meager beginning in Gary, Indiana, like it has never before been told. We learn more about Joe, the father, and also the neighborhood he chose to live in. There are details surrounding the neighborhood, the little community's Little League baseball teams, the long days of practicing their music in the basement of a neighbor's home, the deceptive maneuvers used by Tito Jackson to develop his guitar-playing skills, and finally, the events surrounding the talent show at Gary's Roosevelt High School that introduced the Jacksons. The story is told by the original unknown member and leader of the group.

The Jacksons continue to perform to this day. Although refined by experience and technology, the act has not essentially changed from its inception. In the early days, no one except their families knew about their rehearsals. They couldn't practice together at Joe's house, but they did practice at Reynaud's house. Since they were using his basement and he was the oldest, he automatically made himself the leader. They decided they would surprise Joe with their progress. Before then, the Jackson family wasn't charismatic to the neighbors. The neighborhood was booming with children, and the majority of them laughed teasingly at the Jacksons. There were nine Jackson children at the time living in a two-bedroom basement-less house with their parents.

Reynaud D. Jones's engrossing book is a must-read for avid music history, Jackson 5, and Michael Jackson fans.

Roy HornRoy Horn From Siegfried & Roy Dies At 75. 09-05-'20

Roy Horn, half of the famed Las Vegas magic and entertainment duo Siegfried & Roy, has died of complications related to the coronavirus, partner Siegfried Fischbacher said in a statement Friday (May 8). He was 75.

"Today, the world has lost one of the greats of magic, but I have lost my best friend," Fischbacher said. "From the moment we met, I knew Roy and I, together, would change the world. There could be no Siegfried without Roy, and no Roy without Siegfried."

Illusionists Siegfried and Roy recalled a special bond they had with superstar entertainer Michael Jackson.

In 1989, when the illusionists were preparing their Mirage performances that ran for 13 years, Michael Jackson loved to watch the rehearsals.

Siegfried asked Michael if he would come up with a theme song to be used for the show.

"As I was talking to him, I noticed he was tapping out a tune with his fingers," Siegfried said.

Michael Jackson often attended their shows at The Mirage. Siegfried would introduce him to the audience.

"People would applaud and he would stand up and wave," Siegfried said.

It was in Japan, where Siegfried and Roy performed for a year while The Mirage was being built, that the introduction of Michael caused a near riot.

"I introduced Michael and the fans went crazy," Siegfried said. "People were jumping over barriers. We had to stop the show."

Michael wrote a song for their show in 1989 called 'Mind Is The Magic'.

Rest in Peace Roy! The Magic never dies!

New Documentary Film Honours 'King Of Pop'. 05-05-'20

Graham King, producer of 'Bohemian Rhapsody', recently secured the rights to produce a movie based on the 'King of Pop' Michael Jackson's life. He also obtained access to all the legend's music.

The producer's company, GK Films, employed the services of John Logan, a three-time Oscar-nominated writer, to write the script of the movie.

An Africa Giant, African American singer, songwriter, and dancer Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 — June 25, 2009) dubbed the 'King of Pop', through stage and video performances, he popularized complicated dance techniques such as the moonwalk, to which he gave the name.

His sound and style have influenced artistes of various genres. Jackson's contributions to music, dance, and fashion, earned him the title 'King of Pop'.

He is recognised as the Most Successful Entertainer of All Time by Guinness World Records.

In 1992, Jackson was declared King of Sanwi, a traditional kingdom located in the south-east of Ivory Coast. In 2001, the MTV Video Vanguard Award was renamed in his honour.

The film which is due for release on 29 August 2020 is going to be based on real-life events that happened during the course of Michael Jackson's life and not the desensitised version.

'Mirroring Michael Jackson' is a documentary film honouring the 'King of Pop' showcasing how Michael Jackson's groundbreaking musical legacy has influenced performers of the past, present and future.

The film presents cherished memories of Jackson via the collective voices of MJ's friends, fellow recording artists and collaborators. Michael Jackson's talent and artistry is celebrated in the film with original musical performances in loving memory of the 'King of Pop'.

The movie will portray all the complexity of the singer's life from birth till death at 50 years old in June 2009. No part of his childhood as a star and his adulthood as a world-renowned artist will be ignored.

His adult life was filled with a lot of challenges as he often had to pay off accusers over allegations of sexual molestation of children who spent the night at his house.

One of the allegations sprouted from the story portrayed in a HBO documentary titled 'Leaving Neverland', a film that won an Emmy for its compelling story. The makers of the documentary are currently involved in a legal battle for $100 million with the Jackson estate.

In spite of all these allegations, there is a significant amount of interest in the life and music of the icon as evidenced by the Broadway musical which is currently in production.

King and Logan will iron out every detail of the script before setting it at the studio. The duo have worked together on two other films titled 'Hugo' and 'Rango', which is an animation. — Africa Giant.

Quincy Jones' $9.4M Win In Michael Jackson Royalty Suit Wiped Out By Appeals Court. 05-05-'20

Quincy JonesA trial judge was in error by letting a jury decide whether the superstar producer was entitled to work on remixes plus licensing income from 'This Is It'.
A California appeals court has ruled that a trial judge overseeing Quincy Jones' fight for more royalties for his work producing Michael Jackson records didn't adequately interpret contracts. As a result, the superstar producer's $9.4 million win three years ago has been reversed.

Jones originally sought $30 million for projects made after Michael Jackson's death including remixes of hit songs as well as the licensing of masters for This Is It. After a trial in 2017, the jury returned a verdict that Jones was entitled to nearly $1.6 million because he didn't get a right to participate in those remixes, an additional $5.3 million in joint venture profits, nearly $2 million more for This Is It and $180K for foreign public performance income.

But should the case have even gone to jury?

The appeals court rules that Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Judge Michael L. Stern should have looked at extrinsic evidence about the contract to make a preliminary determination about the meaning of Jones' producer contracts. Only when the contracts were reasonably susceptible to at least two interpretations and there was enough conflict in the evidence should the contractual interpretation be put to a jury.

"The trial court did not perform these judicial functions; instead, it allowed the jury to act in a judicial capacity," states the opinion.

As for the correct interpretation of the contracts, the appeals court proceeds to take its own look at the extrinsic evidence and comes to the conclusion that nothing Jones' side has put forward negates how Jones was due anymore than a 10 percent royalty rate on record sales. The appeals court finds that this rate was fixed, there wasn't music experts testifying otherwise, and so forth. On the issue of joint venture profits, the opinion states, "The award of $5,315,787 must be reversed because it was based on the jury's improper conclusion that: (1) the Producer Agreements entitled Jones to a share of net receipts for Master use licenses; and (2) the Producer Agreements entitled Jones to more than 10 percent of record sales if Sony increased Jackson's basic royalty rate over time in the Recording Agreements."

The appeals court also concludes the producers agreements did not entitle Jones to fees for remixing masters and, alternatively, the remix damages were too speculative.

The case has been remanded to the trial judge who will now need to sharply slash the award based on today's decision.

Finally, the appeals court rejects a cross-appeal from Jones over the trial judge's refusal to allow him to move forward on a claim of financial elder abuse. It's ruled that the judge didn't abuse discretion by disallowing a belated attempt to assert this claim.

MJJ Productions was represented by a team at Kinsella Weitzman.
